Women’s underwear for hiking

Calling all ladies that hike! I’m finding that my normal cotton pants are not ideal for long hikes. They don’t dry out when it rains, and are not particularly comfortable /generally are quite visible under my hiking leggings. Any brands or fabrics you’d recommend?

Update: Wow, thanks so much for all your suggestions! Great to know I’m not alone! I’ll give a few of these a try and see which works best.

Icebreaker merino are amazing, come in several styles. Expensive but worth it. Super comfy and dry so fast. Also, merino is naturally antibacterial so odour-resistant. Can't speak to visibility under leggings though as I wear trousers for hiking.

Another vote for merino wool products for hiking! I use smartwool underwear. Quick drying, odour resistant, antibacterial. Cool in hot weather (as very breathable) but also insulating in cold weather, it baffles me, it’s magic!

Haven't tried for hiking but I used Boody for exercise classes, comfy, wicks and airs well. They are a bamboo brand.

I sound like an crappy advert but step one has changed my life. I'm a big guy eith chunky thighs but I can now hike 15 miles with zero chafing with a pair of Step Ones. Had to bin all my other underwear quite quickly.

I wear cheap M&S synthetic pants that are very quick to dry. But if you want something more fancy then appearently merino is the way to go, e.g. Smartwool or Icebreaker.

I find the Decathalon merino ones even better than icebreaker., as well as being a lot cheaper.

Yep I wear decathlon underwear all the time now, including my long runs.

Not tried their merino ones. I just wear their cheap briefs for every day wear, and actually the men’s long seamless “boxers” for runs over 20 miles. No thigh chafing with these beauties!(I wear them under a running skirt.)

I had a problem with uncomfortable underwear when hiking and after trying different underwear to know avail. Then I realised it was the trousers. I now wear a looser fit North Face hiking trouser. Problem solved. Also M&S no VPL synthetic shorts style knicks. Couldn’t find them last time in M&S though.

Try decathlon. They do underwear for cyclists. Very lightweight and comfortable. I use them as my holiday underwear when I goto warm countries. Work fine and cheap too.

Everyone hates this answer but the cheapest thongs from Primark one size up. Been at it for a decade.

Ex Officio Give-n-Go 2.0 Men's Briefs.

They wick, they dry fast, they don't stink, and they breathe, which helps to keep everything healthy down there. They're comfortable to wear, and the higher waistline means that they don't rub uncomfortably against your hip belt when you're wearing a heavy pack.

They make women's briefs too, but as always seems to be the case with underwear, the quality is shit compared with the men's. The 2.0 model doesn't even have the little goodie pouch anymore, so there's really no reason to settle for the weaker elastic and inferior stitching on the women's version.

Mate! I have done a damp long distance walk with merino, bamboo and synthetic wicking underwear. Do not wear natural fibres! I know it is counterintuitive,but unless you want to spend several days walking like Bruce Wayne due to extreme chafing of the bum crack,stick to running underwear. Trust me.

Yeah I wear the short-style ones; they're good but tbh I find cheap synthetic M&S pants do the job just as well

Even as a man, I prefer the longer legged close fitting style undershorts. Like cycling shorts but without the chamois.
They don’t bunch up, and they don’t chafe.
I’ve got some from DHB and Underarmour.
I’m sure they’d work perfectly for you as well.
