This entire episode is worse than I could have imagined

I actually didn’t mind the main cast. Writing was definitely not great, but the premise and location were interesting. But you’re telling me they couldn’t localize whatever the pollution was actually doing for them?

Also, scientists are not about that “enraged group kill” life. They’re nerds, confrontation is never their strong suit.

Why pollute the entire town instead of the exact spot you need to collect the sample from?

Scientists love it when the samples they're studying are contaminated.

On a global scale, higher temperatures can indeed soften permafrost. The release of significant quantities of methane from melting permafrost may be a challenge in the future, but hopefully not as dire as originally feared. In a hand-wavey way that serves the story, it’s not implausible that softer permafrost would make it easier for the scientists to access their samples. It’s like how the microorganisms could have astounding medical breakthroughs - it’s just there to set up motive, and we’re probably not supposed to think about it too hard.

I don’t really know how the refinery could localize pollution to thaw specific permafrost though. Don’t ask me - I’m not a detective.

Building on this, the idea that scientists would be listened to by a mine to INCREASE their pollution, is wild. One, the mine clearly was part of a larger conglomerate, who I guarantee cares about profits and reputation. They’re not about to willy nilly forget pollution standards that could damage their operational licenses for science. If it was the other way around, like the mine was producing too much pollution and they were all hired to cover it, that theory made sense. The theory though that a mine would be like, yeah let’s turn this up a few notches for science 😂 is beyond.

What got me was them just stopping in the middle of interrogating Clark when there were significant additional killings and information to gather and just fucking off for awhile. Maybe kill him before he squeals. Why not.

She was dating one of the lead scientist. She read His notes. And what fuck is there not to understand about this. He had his notes all over his cabin. I swear some of y’all didn’t even watch a single minute.

Is it deep and nuanced, though? The scientists just wanted the mine to pollute more to make their job easier, that is super straightforward and is something that could be easily hinted at or flat out said in internal documents that she could have access to.

I think it is desperately firing in all directions and hoping it hits something. This is more hilarious by the minute.

Getting hit in the head that hard with a big metal fire extinguisher would probably kill someone or at least cause permanent brain damage.

They waded into the fray like henchmen in the original Batman TV series.

That’s my gripe with this plot line. If the scientists were working with the mining company and the dirty cop, they would’ve just subdued Annie and called them instead of murdering them like a crazy animal. I have worked in a research lab and when you work in a lab, you KNOW that your specimens will be destroyed and shit will hit the fan plus Annie was trespassing so they should’ve just detained him somewhere until the cops arrived.

Honestly out of the myriad issues I had with the finale this doesn’t really register. Like…many years of isolation and complete dedication of your life to one project, only to see it destroyed in minutes? And the already-present poor morals of helping pollute a town for a chance that your research is improved? It doesn’t feel crazy that they would snap at seeing Annie destroy their work at all given the background we got of the characters.

Even then it's a cheap, poorly acted x-files knockoff at best

That reminded me of the scene in Aliens where Ripkey gets trapped with Newt and tries to break the plexiglass but instead breaks the chair in the process and gives up. Somehow here, Danvers is able to break glass without any emergency button being in place in case someone accidentally gets trapped inside a walking freezer!

I like how clark can hear her screaming all the way up the ice tunnel, like no way sound travels that far. 

He suffocated her; he would be the legal killer, with the others serving as mere accomplices.

The most bizarre fact is that "something" warned Clarke about the killer ladies' arrival, and the killer ladies claimed that "something" punished scientists for Ann's murder. But how come "something" did not kill the real killer?

He said at first

"this lady unearthed our conspiracy and could have the mine shut down, we better stage her death to make it look like we killed her to silence her activism for some fucking reason"

I loved season 1 and 3, so I wanted this to not be so poorly written. Alas.

The story is full of holes, and a lot of the plot points lead to nothing.
But the main issue people have with it, is that it's a True Detective season - and the most important findings are done by a ghost in E1, and one of the leads by landing on their ass through ice in E6.
The script is just bad, so people feel cheated. It's basically a True Detective season that you bought on wish.com
