Teamlab borderless wasn’t ever supposed to be a 1b to Planets. Borderless is very similar to what TeamLabs used to be, smaller pop-up protections exhibits / experiences.
Planets is the exception, it was their first large scale experience. I do hope they make more, Planets is amazing.
If by “original” you mean Planets that is. TeamLabs has been around for a while, Planets was not their first installation.
The first one was held in Odaiba in the Carpark across from Gundam. The same stuff ended up being installed at Planets. Borderless, which was next to Venus Fort, was their next big step. I haven't seen the newer version of Borderless, but I bet it's great and OP just likes to complain.
No, you have it backwards.
The original TeamLab Borderless in Odaiba Palette Town was a large permanent exhibit, not a popup. It was probably double the size of Planets. It was also much more interactive.
Planets was supposed to be the smaller temporary exhibit, compared to Borderless. (Planets opened after Borderless as a 2 year exhibit that was to end in 2020).
However COVID happened and Odaiba suddenly became a ghost town. With almost no visitors, the entire Palette Town complex was then shut down for redevelopment, and so the original Borderless was forced to close as well.
With the main Odaiba location gone, TeamLab decided to extend Planets from 2020 to 2023. Then last year they decided to extend Planets again to 2027.
The new Borderless, like the old one, is a permanent exhibition.
Borderless / Planets aren’t the first TeamLab Exhibits. TeamLab has been around since 2001. They’ve done small temporary popups and events in the city for quite some time. They transferred to doing more light/projection exhibits in the mid-late 2010s.
Those two exhibits are much larger than what they’ve done before, but my comment about Borderless being smaller and more inline with their original exhibits are regarding that.
Didn’t realize by “original” OP meant Borderless v1. I totally forgot about Borderless v1 😂. Thanks for reminding me about that Palette Town refurb, I haven’t been down there since then, need to check the are out again.
The Palette Town a is just two things for now. A go-kart track (fun) where MegaWeb was, and Immersive Fort Tokyo (also reasonably fun) reusing Venus Fort's European town theming.
The land owners long had redevelopment plans for Palette Town. They didn't choose to make to make a such a huge shift towards building an arena of all things purely as a reaction to COVID (which everyone always expected to be a temporary issue).
As I understand the redevelopment schedule for Palette Town changed significantly (was pushed forward) during COVID.
Umm the original one in Odaiba WAS Borderless - it moved when their lease expired.
If you think the hanging globes and light projection rooms are the only things at borderless, you didn’t explore enough. There are at least 4-5 other exhibits, including the light show which is actually spectacular. They are intentionally hard to find though.
That said, the original BORDERLESS in Odaiba was better before it moved and lost a couple exhibits.
I just want to add that the old Borderless had this play area where you could draw your own creature, scan it, and see it projected around the ecosystem in the room. I got a video of both the one my SO and I made. It was a silly but fun memory.

good to know!
I was at the borderless like a month ago and I loved it, for me it was way better then Planets. What is kind of tricky with borderless is that there is no given path and it is easy to miss a lot of the expositions.
Yeah but they tell you to go back and that the rooms changed op didn't follow directions. I enjoyed it more than planets also.
Did you only stay in the hallways?
I thought borderless was fantastic and had a few rooms that were not only projections. The room with one thousand swivel lights was insane.
If you quickly walked through and didn't actually interact with the art on the wall then yeah it would be boring. Sounds like you didn't actually take the time to enjoy it or figure out what stuff does as it moves on the wall.
TeamLabs in general is the most overrated thing in this beautiful country.
Overrated for sure as far as every foreigner has it on their must do. I’ve seen it three times tho, and each time it was definitely worth the hour or two.
Yeah, I fuckin hate all the team labs shit. It's just all physical 90s screen savers.
Better hurry kid, because in 5 minutes, this place becomes a Teamlab!
Lol cope more
How crowded was it? Was planning to go there but now I have doubts (thanks btw)
I haven't been, but given how Azabudai Hills is crowded AF with tourists, feeling like Disney airport, it must be pretty crowded.
Why is Azabudai Hulls crowded with tourists? Are they all there for Teamlab?
Yeah
Damn. I wondered if Teamlabs was gonna ruin that place.
I mean tbf any non-residential neighborhood feels overcrowded with tourists these days
Marunouchi is pretty OK, even Roppongi hills isn't as crowded, akasaka also same as usual. It's just team labs is really a crowd mover.
Apparently it does, but there a few other things to do there as a local :)
I really like Azabudai Hills, but I'm going to avoid it for a short while. The whole B1 area between kamiyacho and the team labs is just swarming with tourists.
Assume everything is crazy crowded
If you have a good idea in Tokyo, assume a million others had the same idea…because they did.
I know art is subjective, but I feel like a lot of people are too easily enamored with colorful lights and projectors. The images are incredibly pixelated, a lot of the repeated patterns/images look like actual clipart, there's no actual artistic direction in what's being projected besides the overall concept of "borderless" and specific exhibits (the hanging globes were indeed cool), and you can easily tell the walls are covered in black tiles because it looks like they were quickly slapped on.
The whole thing is so amateur, even compared to Planets, that I am fully convinced the hype behind this is from TikTok/Instagram videos. Like if some of yall really want to like this so badly that you just easily ignore all of the above, then by all means thats on you, but don't make it seem like an obvious $30 ticket choice that youve been to "multiple times" for "hours."
Yeah it doesn't appeal to me, looks like a tourist trap.
Like it does t look that horrible but it's "why would I pay money for this when I could just go watch the sunset instead for free" sort of thing.
Much like with modern art museums, I actually don't mind weird or exotic art or stuff that doesn't make much sense, I don't really like being part of an obvious money laundering scheme though where I pay like five thousand yen to see drawings that look like a kindergarten aged child did them.
Kinda like the shit they've got at naoshima. Except for the Monet exhibit since he's actually a proper artist.
Is it the one with the water pool? Was really bad.
The old team lab borderless was amazing, it had one room where you climbed up onto a suspended net and could lien down on the net with projections 360 degrees around you. I was disappointed that one wasn’t included in the new version. I really liked the rooms that were more physical art installations in the new version - I enjoyed less the projection rooms. The installation rooms were great.
