I don’t know if someone would donate an Hermes, but I have purchased real diamonds, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Gucci at a Goodwill by Monterey, CA. They weren’t priced any differently than any of the other stuff either. I really scored! When I find high end stuff at Goodwill, I always think someone passed away and the house was cleaned out by someone who doesn’t know the value of the items. I know if I passed tomorrow my husband would haul all my stuff to Goodwill as he doesn’t “get” my shoes and handbags and cannot fathom that they cost more than a few bucks.

One of the only places I tolerate "grift" prices is one of my favorite local chains. They support a local hospice, and they get a lot of end-of-life donations. Sometimes I go in just to look at their display cases, because the items they get are so cool - antiques and collections built up over a lifetime!

They get such a range of stuff, they've gotten really good at figuring out what, precisely, they have and pricing it accordingly. Obviously some of the cost goes to overhead, but they're staffed by volunteers and proceeds go to specialized patient care, so I'm fine with the "inflated" price. Their "normal" items are always reasonable, and I think the previous owners of the "special" items would like that they've gone to an appreciative home!

(Part of that is to say: are there any thrift stores local to you that support causes you like? It might be worth directing your husband there if anything were to happen. When my grandmother, a teacher for 30 years, died, we took a lot of her things to one that supports our local teachers' union and offers its members donated school supplies free of charge)

Goodwill, though? I take the good fortune and run!

That’s actually a really good idea to name where I want my stuff taken! There’s a thrift store near us that supports disabled veterans by buying them service animals with the proceeds. I’m going to make sure my stuff goes to them.

Sure, I love shouting them out! It's White Dove Thrift Shoppe in Arizona, with a few locations around the Phoenix area. The Teacher Thrift Store, as my family calls it, is Treasures 4 Teachers, which is part thrift store, part free supply store for teachers!

These are AZ-specific as far as I know, but maybe there are similar organizations in your area?

Long ago, I read an article in vogue, or something similar, wherein the author described finding navy, black & brown Hermes Kelly bags (all together) for $5 apiece at a thrift store. Obviously someone donated the collection of a deceased rich woman’s closet. I still feel bitter envy.

To be fair, they didn't price it at $10k, I titled this as such because it's all I could think when I saw it. I think it just got posted this morning, and the current bid is a little under $70 - which is more than this bag is worth, but I guess a "good deal" if the bidders aren't paying attention.

I managed for Goodwill for years and at least our E-commerce division had authenticity checkers and took it pretty seriously. People don’t realize they can be hit with a huge fee for selling counterfeit merchandise.

That's the idea! This listing is definitely not for an authentic bag. I see photos in store and online listings of seriously overly priced reps Goodwill puts up all the time. If they do have authenticity checkers, they're either not great or they're being pressured to let things slip through.

I'm not actually against reps, for the record, I am very against misrepresenting them as auths.

No totally fair, its also part of the problem that Goodwill is broken up into tons of smaller regional companies under the Goodwill umbrella. When I worked at Goodwill SWPA, we were one of 67 different Goodwill organizations that used shopgoodwill.com . It’s a shame there is basically no standard operating procedure between the different organizations.

We have Goodwill of the Columbia & Willamette. Funnily enough it was actually at one of our local Goodwills where I started noticing the overpriced bullshit like 10 years ago. $70 for BR trousers I'd seen on sale on the site for $50.

Oh good! I was just about to post that somebody should notify the authorities. It doesn't matter that it's a charitable organization, it's still illegal to sell a fake and Goodwill seems to think they're above that law. I'm just thankful some dumb buyer is not going to get swindled! I say dumb buyer because smart buyers know if it's too good to be true, it isn't.

Wouldn’t you have loved to have been the one to contact the FBI and Hermes corporate and see them come down to the store? I worked For a large corporate oil corporation when I first graduated from college. They also ran travel centers that were open 24 hours a day or 38 hours shifts it was quite common for the IRS to come down to retrieve counterfeit money. One time they came to retrieve a $20 bill that someone had made and colored it in with green crayon!

To be fair to them, I think the bidding started at $15 - but they do seem to be trying to sort of... passively let bidders assume it's real? Other items on the site do include certificates of authenticity, but I'd guess that varies by GW organization.

You'd be surprised,. As someone who recently lost her mom and mom was a Shopaholic, even as a reseller myself, I have to let 99% of It go. It would take me half of the rest of my lifetime to sell everything she add. Not saying that she had Hermes, but I now understand how these things can easily get donated. People die, the kids, if there are any, or in other states or countries and cannot possibly deal with all the stuff that has been left, so the whole lot of it gets donated. Hell, even my own husband who knows I have things of value, would have no clue and would likely just donate it all.

I'm sorry for your loss♡ It's never easy, and sorting through things and the logistics on top of losing someone just makes it harder.

Not to offer unsolicited advice, even though that's entirely what I'm about to do, but since I seem to be on a get your affairs in order trend lately: are there any thrift stores in your area that support good causes and might be more appreciative of nice things than your standard Goodwill? I mentioned elsewhere in this thread one that benefits a local hospice and that I try and support. Even if you don't sell your mom's things, is there a cause you'd like (or she would have liked) to support with them?

Regarding your own things of value: have you considered cataloging them for your husband's reference, if anything were to happen? One thing I did with my grandmother before she died was take pictures of her "nice" jewelry so we knew what not to just send to Goodwill. I kept them on a Google Drive for my family's reference, and my grandmother printed out physical pictures, and on each, we put a quick note (materials, age, sentimental importance). It wound up being really nice to have a reference at a difficult time.

Not Birkin, specifically, but yes, it does say Hermès in the title - I tried to screenshot it to include that, but I think it's cut off unless you open the picture. It's also listed as the brand in the description, and there's a whole lot of "Hermès" branding they highlight in other pictures.

I always apreciate the honest made in China tags, they make it easier for us. Fun fact: some bags like the Longchamp Le Pliage are actually made in China, seeing a made in France tag on one should raise red flags since it’s either vintage (from back when they were made in France, which is more than 10 years ago) or most likely fake. A fake rarely puts “made in China” on the tag.

Shit like this pisses me off because of how much work we used to have to put into checking name brand purses to make sure they were actually legit. (Pricer, Regional midwestern consignment shop). Not sure if it's true, but we were always told it was on us (the company) if we marketed something as "Gucci" that was a fake, and if we were ever unsure of it's validity, to price it as a generic and not to put a brand on the tag.

That's fair!

This one is actually fake; Hermès is (officially) made in France, and they have an embossed emblem on these bags (including this fake, lol) that says so. Their bags are pretty famously made by in-house artisans and take between 25-40 hours for one person to make, start to finish (or so they claim). Mass production isn't in the cards, or they'd lose a lot of the exclusivity that drives their value.

Back in the late 80s when members only jackets were so very very popular. My uncle was stationed in Korea. He could get tons of Members Only jackets and ship them back to the states. The only difference was they didn’t have the members only tag attached to them. He would mail those separately in an envelope and then they could affix the members only labels to the jackets themselves. He didn’t do it for any secondhand business like they do with reselling . He just got him for his family. They were identical to what was being sold in the stores.

It's wild what some of the Goodwills put up. I do authentication for my regional Goodwill e-commerce, and I am damn good at it. The biggest red flag of a fake Hermes bag at Goodwill is that it's an Hermes bag at Goodwill. 🤣 That being said I've seen a COA on a pair of shoes that had a pic of the brand on the inside and a different brand on the outside. You can't convince me that Authenticate First does anything more than flip a coin.
