I doubt he would've actually lost his job for killing a random Jewish citizen. Especially when they could've easily called that a riot/disturbance.
Ok but what about Ramah? She was a random Jewish citizen and he was demoted for killing her.
You could justify to Rome the necessity of killing a male street preacher who causes squatters, affects revenues, and raises mobs. You cannot justify running into a crowd and cutting down a random woman.
Exactly, Rome had standards, even if they were often brutal at times. It was a very public killing, and if they (Rome) didn't do something about it, a revolt would happen....again. and Rome didn't want that.
Quintus would have excused Gaius for doing so. The person Quintus reported to did not excuse him.
