These scenes were framed and shot the same way on purpose, according to Christopher Storer
DiscussionI thought he said it on purpose... he would never have yelled at actual Donna like that... Or maybe he always just thought Carm was too much like Donna and never dared to say it til then..
I definitely think it’s the latter, I think him saying it was completely accidental, he would have realised the hurt it would have caused
Ritchie is a good egg :')
His character arc! It inspires me
Carms mother is toxic for carm. Carm is toxic for Claire
Both are dealing with their issues mentally, and both are actively pushing people out of their world because they can’t handle it.
Also I got say Jamie Lee Curtis in that shot had that perfect crazy eyes, like someone you know but fully gone. A bit scary honestly
The scene at the dinner table when Nat asks if Donna is okay, and Donna finally snaps... when she says, "am I not acting okay?!" And cousin Michelle goes, "no, not really," the look Jamie Lee Curtis shoots her is the very definition of "if looks could kill." Sent chills down my spine. True crazy eyes.
That whole scene was brilliantly true. So many of us have been at that table, in one spot or another.
Normally when shows have a trigger warning, I don’t get it…but this is so real for people who grew up like that, it definitely needs one.
I've seen that look on my mums face many times. It was spot on.
Same, it’s so scary
I know Claire loves him, but she really doesn’t need him in her life. I find her character boring because it’s like we only see her for the purpose of her relationship to Carmen.
I think that's the point of her character all Carmen used her for was a relationship to Carmen her only point was a physical partner. Everyone remembers the jerk who caught the foul ball
I don’t find her boring, but I think it was there to make a point Carmy has a hard time finding joy and allowing it to happen because he’s used to joy not existing
Imagine trying to get something out of the cooler and you got these two chatting for 30 minutes right by the drink you really want
first time going to a supermarket at 10am?
It's not as bad as being on your way to do your workout at your building's shared facilities on the roof and finding a bunch of clothes in the staircase and some buff Willy Wonka going at it in his underpants.
buff Willy Wonka
Is this a new nickname for Jeremy Allen White?
I mean... he is quite buff and he has drawn a lot comparisons to Gene Wilder... So I guess that's a compound of the two concepts?
But, my daughter who really doesn't get the appeal of Jeremy Allen White AT ALL and thinks he doesn't look so bright in the Calvin Klein campaign because he's making the face of the "huh" cat, says he should be cast as Rocky in a remake of Rocky Horror Picture Show and now I can't really unsee it.
Lol can y’all move ,than I’ll forget what I was getting because there are both hot.
Just trying to get some chubby hubby
You get it.
There was a scene kind of like this in Curb Your Enthusiasm. Larry David was trying to get ice cream and these two ladies were having a really emotional conversation in front of the freezer that would be awkward to interrupt. Being Larry David, he reached around them anyways. Now I’m thinking that Larry David should’ve been a cameo in “Forks”. Him at that dinner party, just imagine!
what’s past is prologue
Oh wow, I completely missed that. But yeah it makes so much sense. Carmy has inherited more than a love of cooking from his mother.
Where did Storer say that? I’d like to read/watch it
The Watch podcast with Chris Ryan and Andy Greenwald
awesome, thanks
BRAVO VINCE
So if Carmy is spiraling downwards like Donna, he definitely doesn't deserve Claire in that state. He needs to help himself first from his mental illness.
I believe that. But I also noticed that it seemed like every close-up on Carmy has him angled/titled in that way. Like that’s his tic; leaning and putting his hand in front of his mouth.
Hurt peopoe hurt peopeo
This is exactly why I can’t support their relationship. Whether you like SydCarmy or not, it’s so clear that Claire is not good for Carmy. Not only did he lack focus on his business, but she represents and is tied to everything he doesn’t want to do with his family.
Reframe it. He’s not good for her. She’s better/healthier than he is mentally.
carmy really did so many hurtful things to her in that cooler. what I can't understand is why claire pursues him?
I’m not excusing Carmy’s behavior, but your second point exactly.
They’re not good for each other. Of course we’re watching the show in the perspective of Carmy, so naturally I’m rooting for him to get better. While Claire is a good person and mentally healthier, you cannot deny the fact that she is very much related to what Carmy’s trauma due to family ties.
Am I the only one who thinks claire isn't a good addition to the show? The relationship is mid the writing between them, besides the last episode of s2. I'm all for a romantic relationship for Carmie but the way the show did it was really bland white chicken imo.
I don’t think that the point of Claire - at least now - was to add another character with the same level of depth. That would be too distracting and there were already a handful of characters from season 1 whose arcs need more development.
The point of Claire imo is to merely establish (and add onto) the notion that Carmy consistently disallows himself from happiness and normalcy, whether it be due to mental illness, an obsession with being the best, or a combination of both.
‘Bland white chicken’ is exactly the way I felt about them
Holy shit, what if hes already knocked claire up and season three is them having to work shit out?
Soap opera territory.
Well, I hope she gets an abortion lmao. I wouldn't want to be tied down to Carmy in his current state. That's 18 years!
Ginger, get the popcorn!
Well played Toby!
This has actually occurred to me. Especially since during Carmy and Richie's fight where Richie's like, "at least I have a kid, you don't have shit"...foreshadowing?
> Richie's like, "at least I have a kid, you don't have shit"...foreshadowing?
Holy shit I never thought of that.
Richie also says, "why can't you just let something good happen in your life for once?" Self sabotage is a very real thing for people who struggle with mental health. They create a problem out of nothing and act out in destructive behavior. Similar to what Carmy does after being stuck in the cooler. They are so afriad that "the other shoe is going to drop" because it will always drop when they manifest it either conciously or unconciously. I know a lot of people don't want Claire's character back, but she seems like a key piece in Carmy moving past his trauma. Not even saying as his girlfriend, but just him realizing that he is deserving of recieving and giving love.
Excellent comment. Hear, hear!
Mentally ill AND childhood trauma victims (PTSD is mental illness, do I guess I’m disproving myself) both have issues that you mentioned
Aw, are you sure that this wasn’t an original idea that I had all by myself?
You're braver than me. At least you shared it, I have a lot of theories/ideas I'm keeping to myself because I don't feel like getting into Reddit arguments lol
ah, another person who types out a paragraph of a comment only to hit cancel and move on lol
hello
Honestly…that would be interesting. But I don’t want them to be together, I think being a single father could actually help Carmy.
I sorta understand what you mean, but maybe get like, a cat first. Or a goldfish. Dude can barely take care of himself, let alone another human being
Let's start with a plant and work our way up from there.
Japanese peace lily! They’re good for stress.
Yeah. Like, maybe a full year without setting his own apartment on fire in the middle of the night before a baby is involved.
We all know in the real world it is a bad idea, but this is a TV show and he has a host of people around him to help.
If Richie can turn around in one week, so can Carmy. Just need to power level for an episode and we good.
i really think people expecting children to heal them causes more harm than good.
I feel like people think Donna and her ex were normal people before they had kids and somehow the kids made them that way? But Donna and their father were like this always.
them having to work shit out and failing to do so romantically could be a good storyline. Maybe a bit too real, considering the shows already got a dysfunctional family and a broken one.
Very La La Land
Nah, fam. Donna and her husband had those issues BEFORE they had kids.
Look how Mike, Nat and Carmy turned out. Why pass that shit on?
Claire definitely suffered from a lack of character in s2, hopefully she gets some personality in s3 because I think she's a good anchor for Carmy. He needs someone outside of the culinary world to ground him, and Molly Gordon is great so hopefully she gets to keep that role
Lip already did that. Fell outta bathtub with slippery baby in his arms, fell asleep while baby was on blanket on the floor, etc.. Had to have that trampy Tami's help.
He would leave it at daycare and forget to pick it up until it was in high school.
The Cub
Dunno why when Claire called him out of the blue super excited on opening day, then left a very awkward voice mail, I totally thought she was gonna say she wanted to tell him that she was pregnant...
Hmmm. I mean, they are framed similarly (not the same) but this is also just kind of like...normal shot/reverse shot
Jamie Lee Curtis is the fucking GOAT.
Her interview on The View about this role is really good
Damn, this show is so beautifully crafted!
Some times your references can be too subtle...
So Carmy has an Oedipus complex? /s
Oh wow never noticed when I watched.
Interesting that the top frame looks dark, red tones and cast in the shadow (hell), where as the bottom frame has the blue tone with their faces showing entirely with no shadows. Great juxtaposition
Both women thrive on chaos.
Hahaha classic. The bear really is a funny show.
I do not care for the Claire character at all but I understand the parallels they were trying to portray
“Yeah, ok Donna”. Richie’s face when he realised he said it was one of the saddest moments in the show for me, he knew how Carm would react, his outburst in the walk in was the equivalent of driving through the dining room
