Dupre agreed to be extradited in May 2023 and has been in custody in Bangkok ever since. Thai authorities agreed to waive the death penalty in the case in order to satisfy Canadian requirements for extradition.
By agreeing to extradited he waived having an extradition hearing in Canada. He would have certainly lost that hearing given that Thailand waived the death penalty and it would have cost him in lawyer fees to fight the extradition.
Also Canada won't extradite if there are cruel and unusual punishments attached: such as the death penalty.
