I spent the day at Electrify Expo testing out EVs from BMW, Ford, Hyundai and Fisker. The most direct competition to the Model Y would be the Ford MachE, so I spent a fair amount of time looking it over and driving it. At the end of the test drive, the Ford rep asked for my honest feedback on the car. I told him there were only two reasons I could think of to buy a MachE:
1) You always drive a Ford and have no interest at looking at anything else.
2) You really hate Elon Musk.
Otherwise I can’t think of a single reason to buy the MachE. The rear seat is ridiculously tiny. The cargo area is small. It has less range and speed than the Model Y. Blue cruise is inferior to AutoPilot / FSD. There is no tax credit. And it has a higher MSRP. Don’t even get me started on the fact that you have to interact with a dealer to buy one.
Some people may think the interior is nicer because it has the typical physical buttons you see in traditional cars. But I thought the buttons felt really cheap and plasticky. So I would still prefer the minimalist interior of the Model Y.
The BMW i5 was great - beautiful interior. But it cost $90K.
The Ioniq 5N was more of a competitor to the Performance Model 3. But it cost $20K more and only gets 220 miles of range.
And then there’s Fisker. Poor guys. Nobody from Fisker even showed up. It was just a local dealer in LA trying to offload remaining inventory. I won’t even go into how pitiful that conversation went.
So I left the Expo concluding what I pretty much already knew. Nobody can match Tesla’s unique value proposition for range and overall performance at the current price point. I was hoping to be proven wrong. Maybe someday it will change. Until then, I’m going to stick with Tesla and ignore Elon’s craziness.
