AGT Enterprise D, but it's a Sovereign class

Suppose the timeline of ships got shifted or something, and TNG featured a Soverign class instead of a Galaxy. Pretty much everything else is the same, just go with it. So we've reached All Good Things and Admiral Riker's hot rodded ship comes onscreen.

Think it'd still have three nacelles, a phaser lance, and the cannons or whatever on either side of the bridge?

If you were going to soup up a Soverign class, how would you do it? Either from the perspective of what would Riker do, or what would you personally do.

In-universe reasons to explain or justify the mods are a plus.

Back in the day, a lot of fans designed their own Enterprise-F to look like a Sovereign-class “Dreadnaught,”inspired heavily by the AGT “Galaxy Dreadnaught.” I’ll have to dig up a few photos when I’m at my desk next

I’d imagine it having a quad-nacelle layout, myself. I think it would look mean and fast with a set of downward-facing nacelles under the main ones, with a quantum slipstream drive under the “hood” to really make it into a rapid threat response vessel. If it had a spinal weapon like the Galaxy-X I feel like balance-wise it would fit best under the secondary hull instead of under the saucer, where it could be patched directly into the warp core to feed its energy needs and allowing it to be used even if the saucer is disconnected.

And if we’re really going for the full “alt timeline” wishlist, give it Voyager’s regenerative armor plating. Just imagine it soaring into an encounter with the Borg and as it zooms past, huge as it already is, it grows a full carapace of shiny segmented metal as well as it prepares to do battle.

This is actually one of the only 4-nacelle ships I actually think would look good on screen. 5 minute bash or not, it looks good!

I'm also a big stickler for Roddenberry's design rule that nacelles operate in pairs, so I've never particularly liked ship designs with an odd number.

True, 3 doesn’t work well, I was just saying if that was a 4 split it would look good. Which not my normal opinion when than 2 nacelles are present. 🤣

4 nacelle was what I was thinking as well, 3 wouldn't go here like it does on the galaxy. I'd do the phaser lance on the bottom of the hull and put the bottom nacelles slightly lower and still have those cannons or whatever they were on either side of the bridge. Nice Photoshop work tho.

There were Legacy and Bridge Commander mod-ships like that, look up the Intimidator class

Although it looks cool, that feels like such a poor name for a Starfleet ship class. It always bugs me when fan-made classes have names like “Intimidator” or “Annihilator” or “Overlord” etc.; it runs completely contrary to Starfleet’s core mission of peaceful exploration. Even classes like the Defiant use a word that can be thought of as “defensive”; defying an oppressive power.

That said, great name for a mirror universe counterpart.

True, though on the other hand isn't that point kind of moot when those dreadnought designs themselves would never make it off the designer's desk in a peacekeeping, exploring Starfleet in the first place? When their paradigm shifts so harshly that these monstrosities become possible, naming them accordingly doesn't seem so out of reach imho :D

Keep in mind, we only see the Federation class in form of blueprints quickly flickering across some background bridge screens in the movies. They were really just using different Star Fleet Technical Manual blueprints to make things look busy. And the Triple D only appears in one of Q's alternate realities. Federation dreadnoughts just weren't really a thing, canonically. Headcanonically at least. :D

Well, All Good Things’ future portions (with the “Galaxy X”) are set in 2395. We don’t even need the Sovereign to be Picard’s ship during TNG to have an AGT Sovereign X, because the Sovereign-class Enterprise E was already in service by 2371. There’s plenty of time for the E to replace the D and then get a refit in time for AGT.

The main obstacle in the Prime Timeline isn’t the TNG Enterprise being a Galaxy-class instead of Sovereign-class, it’s the Enterprise F being ready for decommissioning in 2401. That implies the F is fairly old, and means the E must have been retired long before 2401. So an alternate timeline with an AGT Enterprise E would be one where there’s no Odyssey class Enterprise F, and maybe no Odyssey class at all — maybe in this timeline an upgraded Sovereign was considered good enough not to need to replace it with the Odyssey.

AGT’s future is actually really interesting because the more we learn about the prime timeline, the more we realise happened different in the AGT one. The Enterprise-D must have survived Generations, so it could have been the 1701-D dealing with the Borg Queen (First Contact), Son’a (Insurrection), and Shinzon (Nemesis), assuming Picard and his crew were present for all those events in the AGT timeline. If there’s a Sovereign class (introduced 2371) and Odyssey class (introduced est.2390s) in the AGT timeline, then somehow the upgrades the Enterprise-D got in its AGT variant are enough to keep it in service and presumably still the flagship. It’s a very different timeline.

I’ve always felt the decommissioning dates for ships get a little too close together in the late 24th century. After ships with a “100 year lifespan” it’s odd to envision Starfleet making these monstrous kilometre-long heavy cruisers and then disposing of them a mere 5-10 years later. I get that out of lore, you want to always have fresh new designs to keep things interesting, but it feels a bit too fast and wasteful; never lets a big noble ship achieve its legacy, it seems.

I usually just go with the Hero Ship see so much action its easier to replace than repair, it works well for the end of the Dominion war too given how much of a pounding most of the fleet must have taken.

Well it's like the original Enterprise. Scotty in Search for Spock thinks they'll refit her again but the Admiral uses "she's 40 years old" as why they won't

Yeah, it’s just that even today we have naval ships and airplanes that are refitted for at least 20+ years, while in Trek where the ships arguably need to last longer due to their material expense they whip up a whole new hull quicker than Samsung releases new phones. I get they’ve got economies of scale going for them but I’d hate to be in charge of a Federation wrecking crew.

“Didn’t that one come out just two years ago?”
“Yep. We also have an order entered to dismantle six other ship classes.”
“None of these are more than five years old!”

“You kidding? Those things'll still be flying when your grandkids and mine are in the grave.”

The slightly snarky pessimist in me knows a lot of it has been driven by ST:O and the need for players of that to have more than just the main canon of ships. Gotta have all those unique variants and alternatives in order to draw in players, and that at least partially informs the prime canon such that people come to assume/accept that there's dozens of ship classes coming out every single year.

I feel like under-slung pulse phasers on the secondary hull and a swept back roll bar or the Cali-style torpedo "bumps" on the dorsal saucer would be the way to go.

I'd say quad warp nacelles with a phaser Lance on both lower ones along with a bit more armor and six pulsed phase cannons on the top and bottom side at the front of the main hull to really make it a combat ship, maybe throw in a cloak as it is an alternate future

I found some with three nacelles but not everything the AGT ship has. I do like seeing dreadnought versions of each main ship though, it's a fun alternate future scenario

I would skip the third nacelle, it makes no sense for more firepower. The Sovereign is already really streamlined and doesn't have much room for internal upgrades. Its quantum torpedo launcher takes the place of a lance weapon.

I would think about adding pods like the New Orleans has or additional hardware above the saucer like the Nebula class mounts. A giant torpedo pod sitting above the saucer or below the engineering hull can give it an A-10 look.
