They're still at 720p and 2.0 stereo audio.
It's not advertised at all but they do stream at 1080p, albeit with really crappy bitrates. (Audio's still 2.0, though.) I've verified this myself. If anybody's reasonably technical, they can view the manifest (MPD file) in Chrome or any other web browser and see which resolutions are available. You'll see 1080p. I verified the actual data that was pulled down but I don't think the mods want me talking about that. :)
(Why won't Shudder say something? Beats me! It's sad when some rando on Reddit is doing their job for them.)
All that said, yes, if I really like something, I'll pick up the Blu/4K, which will inevitably look and sound better.
Thanks for that effort!
I canceled my sub a few months ago because I was tired of how shit everything looked when I was watching it. Everything is just so compressed and anything with darkness and shadows were borderline unwatchable.
Used to have that problem with crushed blacks especially as well. I have noticed it looks way better these last couple months so maybe they changed something
Yeah no clue. I havent used it for months. Even when I had a sub I rarely watched anything because of crushed blacks and compression. Have you tried watching relic? Borderline unwatchable. Bought the shout factory bluray though. They do quality work.
Seriously, although some stuff (e.g. Destroy All Neighbors AFAIK) only got a standard DVD release.
Watched this last night!
there's only certain stuff I'd buy on 4k. Definitely that
Not sure what the library is like elsewhere but in the UK it's not worth taking a sub more than 1 or 2 months a year, can easily watch anything of worth across a binge in a few days here.
I barely use the app lately, but they’ve put 2 or 3 of my favorite movies in theaters this year so the $6 isn’t really a big deal.
So much pearl clutching and overreacting going on here. It costs less than the price of one Blu Ray movie a month. And for that price it looks perfectly fine. It certainly doesn't look "shit" or "unwatchable." People are so entitled. It's a cheap streaming service. I can live with some digital artifacts in my blacks. It sure beats finding shelf space for physical media of every fucking thing I want to watch. You have to weigh the price and convenience against whether or not you are a pretentious twat who can't enjoy a movie unless it's in 4 fucking K.
Most old movies are only done a disservice by blowing up their resolution anyway.
I mostly agree with you regarding sacrificing some quality for convenience (at the same time I'm a massive blu-ray collector with over 1,400 films/series), but disagree regarding "old movies" being done a disservice by going back to the film to make 4k scans. I've never seen *any* digitally made film look as good as films actually shot on 35mm film. That's not to say that higher quality digital cameras can't make a great picture, but there's something naturalistic about the warmth and color and grain of film that digital just cannot capture. At least, not yet.
Oh I agree with what you are saying about the difference between digital and film. What I mean is that when you take old movies shot on film and increase the resolution, the seams start to show. You can really see how much makeup the actors have caked on. You can see the wires holding up the spaceship or rods moving the puppet. The zippers in the rubber suit. The matte painting background. Etc.
Generally I prefer Blu Ray over DVD but some movies don't need the higher fidelity.
Lol this was my thought reading through the replies.
Tons of the movies on shudder were released in the VHS era. And that was how I originally watched them, on a VHS tape from blockbuster, all dusty, ran to shit VHS tapes...
If you really need 4k quality when watching body melt then I mean fuck man, I guess you're just built different 😂
That is a one time watch for me
Is this the one with the brutal kills on a subway? Yeah this was too much for me. It gets to a point where the violence is just for the sake of violence and just really isn’t enjoyable to watch. I know that’s weird to say about a horror movie but yeah I wasn’t a fan. Totally agree though that if I love a shudder original then I have to buy it on blu ray because the stream is so bad
It's stupid that they have no plans to upgrade streaming quality. They're still at 720p and 2.0 stereo audio. There's no reason why they can't at least throw in lossy 5.1/Atmos muxes and compressed 1080/4K picture. It's 2024, not 2004. Even YouTube offers Dolby Digital Plus 5 1!
