I had a sliver of health left during the last phase of isshin yesterday and used the rice for the first time and then a pellet. One of the only times I actually beat a boss after using a consumable id been saving lol. I think I also used the red candy during that last phase. I get so overwhelmed with some of these bosses that I forget about using prosthetics and consumables.
They become easier to use the more familiar you are with a boss' vulnerable windows.
I definitely never did back when it first came out, but on a replay I did a lot more. I think they updated it so it's a lot easier to get the ammo.

My controversial opinion is ishins gun attacks are overhyped for no reason. It's easily the most negligible piece of his entire moveset. I forget he even has it most runs.

Here you are, this powerful shinobi, with the power sever immortality. You’re gearing up to fight the most celebrated swordsman in your nation. And just when you start getting the better of him, he pulls out a fucking gun. Hilarious
I will never forget the feeling when I died to his pistol reveal. I've been malding at the game my entire first playthrough (Sekiro is my first FromSoft game so that level of suffering was new) but I laughed out loud how I died to that. Wasn't even mad.
Imagine thinking the bullshit level god of Samurai, instead of the anticipated harder sword skills, just adds a spear and gun to his arsenal when he's pushed to his limits.
Learning the lore of his near death experience trying to pursue Tomoe as a romantic partner made his 3rd phase even funnier. Dude got hit by Tomoe's lightning attacks so much he learned to harness the power of natural lightning probably from parrying it

Actually Guardian ape is the boss i took the most time on in my first playthrough as i didnt know you can deflect/block his claws . And the terror attack in 2nd phase was just bullshit (I did not have umbrella at that point) But now its one of my favourite bosses and terror attack can is easy by using umbrella.
I get it. I never even tried to block the bull's or the ape's attacks. It just didn't occur to me that you could.
I'm curious, did it make the demon of hatred easier for you? I feel like I learned to dodge during the ape fight, so the demon wasn't as bad.
My hot take is that the demon of hatred is not that tough. I have more trouble with the two apes than with the demon of hatred.
I sort of agree with this take. Demon wasn't tough for me (charm + no bell) when I first played, and I'm currently stuck at the apes (charmless + bell) because I keep rushing it. Also, in my first play through I quit Sekiro at the Guardian ape.
I have trouble with fatsos in the game. They have slow yet highest damage output. It's so tempting to smack them in the face and then I'll get smooshed down by their heavy attacks. They attack slowly and suddenly 3-4 combo hits. Hate it every time.
I had no problem dodging Overhead attacks from any bosses. But those fat mini bosses annoyed me so bad. Both fat kids n drunkards alike.
Also every fatso in the game is surrounded by other enemies, so every time you want to fight them you have to clear them out first. This makes learning the fatso's moveset a lot harder.
Sekiro is way better than Elden ring and has way better mechanics (no worries I 100% ed both games)
My only problem with sekiro is that I've played it too much. There's not much to do after like 300 hours of sekiro lol
If you’re on PC please play the Resurrection Mod, it’s insanely high quality and adds a ton of content, even combat options
I've heard of it but I'm skeptical. I find mods usually just adjust movesets to make the game annoying.
It certainly does add mixups to major and mini bosses but they feel incredibly organic, much like the Inner bosses. In general it’s the only mod that completely captures the From Soft feel when it comes to enemy AI

Combat and parry system is much better but I prefer the open world and exploration of ER.
I definitely loved exploration in elden ring on my first playthrough until mountain top of the giants where the world becomes a lot more boring for me, and not just for elden ring but for me all open world games, I can only really love exploring it on my first playthrough.
The DLC has especially been an amazing recreation of a first time experience exploring that world. I am studying the game’s illustrated map to find any possible hint at locations or terrain meant for access to a higher or lower area. It has been extremely rewarding so far.
I also had a lot of fun with this, I remember one moment where I couldn’t figure out how to get to the next region, but looking at the map I was able to find the entrance to a short dungeon that took me underground beneath a lake that lead me to the next region.
Later I had some issues with the exploration (mainly some empty areas) but over all it was really good, especially early on.
Idk if it’s way better but I do like Sekiro more than Elden ring, primarily due to replay-ability but also story delivery. I felt like they didn’t balance the vagueness fromsoft usually has with the character development I thought the game needed. Especially for a character like Melina. Or excluding certain key moments and lore that would add a ton to the story.
I’m going to double down on Sekiro being better than Elden Ring. It’s highly more focused and perfects the gameplay it set out to make. Elden Ring has too many options and suffers from it.
suffers? Even if you take the options that elden ring does well, it still has more variety than sekiro, better open world, better lore, better boss design, and more replayability.
The more options available, the more difficult it becomes to balance game play around it. As a result, Elden Ring's massive amount of content leads to quite a few anticlimactic moments. "This boss sure would be difficult, if thrusting from behind a shield wasn't so effective." "Getting double-teamed sure would be an issue, if I didn't have a bunch of spirit ashes to choose from." "Wow, this spell is really good at catching a boss's input-read auto-dodge."
These kind of underwhelming realizations that you have to choose not to use just to keep the game engaging aren't really in Sekiro very much, even using everything to make that game easier still requires you to engage in the combat with a decent level of skill.
This. The few times I played Elden Ring and didn't artificially restrict myself to soloing bosses with a melee weapon, they crumpled so fast I felt like I was cheating. Paradoxically, some of the bosses were so hard and unbalanced against a melee weapon build that at times I felt like I HAD to "cheat" or I wouldn't progress.
Hot take, I shouldn't HAVE to use mimic tear and 500 consumables to beat a boss. Even Malenia, blade of Miquella.
Sekiro's boss fights always felt fair and fun in comparison.
Gameplay is 1000x better in Sekiro, but Elden Ring is so much better at most aspects, overall i feel ER is better and more polished. Elden Ring’s world is much larger and more detailed, the lore is absolutely insanely complicated and cool. I mean yeah Sekiro has really good worldbuilding and lore, but not nearly as good as ER.
If Sekiro was as big as Elden Ring is then it would definitely be better, but it’s not.
Both games are in my top 3 favourite games of all time, but Elden Ring is overall better (IN MY OPINION)
I don’t know if sekiro being as big as elden ring would make it a better game then it is now, considering that many large games would be better if they were smaller, including imo elden ring. It feels cool how big some of the areas are, but then in exchange for that cool feeling massive issued are caused, like a ton of boss reuse, and some areas (including dlc spoilers ) being fairly empty.
Sekiro doesn't need to be bigger than ER to be better. We don't need every game to be open world.
If we're judging games by how fun they are, then the moment to moment gameplay of Sekiro being better than Elden Ring means that it's the better game.
I actually really dislike souls games but loved sekiro. Also part of the reason I refused to fight the demon of hatred since it was the one boss fight that felt completely like a regular souls boss fight

I whole-heartedly agree the combat is the best FS has ever done and the most fun combat. Criminal that we never got DLC, but i am excited that miyazaki said the next FS they want to do combat more like sekiro and bloodborne
I think both games are 10/10 amazing games and couldn't really rank one better than the other. So i just genuinely enjoy them both but i can totally see why some people like sekiro more

Demon of Hatred is not easy, no matter how much you insist
He’s extremely unfun to fight as well. I hate fighting big bosses in FS games. Basically hack away at their ankles while you can’t see what attacks they are going to use.
They did a few good ones in Bloodborne and Midir in DS3. I feel they regressed with ER though.

The issue with DS2 wasnt really that they were humanoid bosses IMO, it’s that mostly they had horrifically boring movesets, the tracking on that game felt weird, and the hitboxes were probably the worst in the series.
Also the art design in a lot of the bosses was pretty uninteresting.

This. I love DS2 and will defend it but one of that game’s biggest issues is that there are simply too many bosses. You can only fight so many dudes in armor with similar move sets before it gets stale.
Unlike other fromsoft games, I didn’t have issues with big bosses (eg ape doh) due to the camera because in sekiro it zooms out a ton, even when you’re right next to them. I don’t love the doh fight but the camera hasn’t been something that I disliked about it.
He's really fun on the 2nd or 3rd play through. I actually look forward to him now.
He's the only boss I didn't beat, and I only bothered for like 30 minutes whereas spent hours on several bosses in the game before.
It just removed what I had enjoyed so much about the game at that point, and I decided it wasn't worth trying because it just wasn't fun for me personally.

Yes, you can go straight to the pit/poison pool/mibu once you unlock the castle, but before fighting the ape. You have a slightly harder snake eyes fight imo, but the double ape cave is empty until you beat the first ape.
I did snake eyes before figuring the ape in my first play through. Wondered why that cave was empty at first but didn’t think much of it. You can imagine the shock I had when I went back through what I thought was an empty cave and there were 2 apes.

The bull was the first time I looked up a strategy. It felt like I was getting pranked by the game because the slightest touch, even when blocked instantly killed me.
Then I saw how easily its charges were deflected and now Gyobu and the bull are the easiest fights in the game. Zero stress
Gyobu is easy for veterans, but as a first big boss, he was magnificent. Mounted, huge weapon doing huge swings, swing cadence, using grappling hook offensively…

This is the comment i agree with the most, i don’t get how people struggle that much with Blazing Bull, Lady Butterfly is tougher, but not in the way that i ever got stuck on her.
For butterfly if you get her in that three bit combo that you can deflect and dodge or parry the air attack you are good.
It took me a while to realize shurikens while she’s in the air knock her down and deal a shit ton of damage.
Spinning Shurikens turn that fight into an absolute breeze
I didn’t give much info on the what I meant so here it is a little better.
Butterfly does a 3hit combo that if you deflect that hit her once you can basically get her to fall into an infinite where she will only do those three moves (I believe two punches last one is a kick?)
When she is in the air ONLY when she is jumping from location to location. Throw a shuriken at her and if timed correctly will knock her back down to the ground.
Aggression is extremely important in that boss fight and the more aggressive you are, and the less time you give her to react she becomes a punching bag instead of a grandma.
For the people she summons in between the fight simply run in circles until she uses them as a projectile and get ready to fight again.
You don’t need a special skill but if I remember correctly she has at least one attack that you can jump on her head for extra posture damage.
But I didn't invest in that skill. Do I start a new game?

The bulls are just not sekiro bosses and I think that trips people up.
The thing that I struggled to learn with Sekiro was that it isn't Dark Souls. You don't move and dodge, waiting for openings to chip away health. You stand and deflect, get hits in, and keep pressure high to fill that posture meter.
That works for every single enemy in Sekiro except Blazing Bull. Blazing Bull you dodge around and slice to death.
You can deflect the bull tho. Lol. It actually stuns him for 3-4 seconds if you do it. That’s how I beat him every time. Without using firecrackers and just deflecting his charge.
Yeah that’s true, though i feel you can mostly spam firecrackers and deflect/dodge the attacks pretty easily, it’s not a difficult fight.
Blazing bull still kills me way too much. Butterfly is easy though.

Lady Butterfly was difficult the first two times on my first play because I was still learning, thanks to her the whole combat "clicked" for me and made the whole thing easier

i agree. i only despise phase 1 of the ape. second phase (which is basically all after first) it gets very easy. summoning his sister is not working at all, since she always drops on a point where i expect her and firecrack the shit out of her, then finish off in 20 seconds

Lady Butterfly was my first boss, she can be beaten by techniques learned in Dark Souls/Elden Ring s it might be why she resulted easy fir you, that or you gone later.
Blazing Bull might seem easy after overcoming him, I had a ton of trouble with him even on subsequent encounters.
I was pretty bad at the start of the game and died to Juzou the drunkard some 25 times. But Blazing bull just took one try lmao

For example: I was in NG+7 when the Bloodborne DLC came out. I beat Orphan in 3 tries. Laurence took me 30+
Some bosses are trivial if you've got the right build, while the same build may make others incredibly hard. Not to mention the fact that people are just DIFFERENT.
It's not a controversial opinion but I expected some air combos and fights since sekiro is a ninja and has a grappling hook. It's just a minor issue tho.
Lady butterfly is easy
I found Lady Butterfly a piece of cake on first playthrough, but in NG+ I really struggled
Same for me and I think it’s because her second phase has the ghosts and those homing charms. Running and hiding is a reliable answer, but it’s too passive. For ng+, I did it constantly because I was afraid of the health damage from the charms. I would spend way too long in phase 2 and my mistakes would add up.
She’s a boss you can otherwise pressure massively.
In the base game I find her really easy, I don’t know why she kicked my ass so hard in the divine heir gauntlet

Isshin’s difficulty is massively overstated, if you beat every boss intended before facing him, none of his moves should be of any trouble, and the first and fourth phases of the fight are basically a cakewalk- and a side take, inner isshin is the most disappointing inner boss.
To me that doesn’t make any sense but I respect your opinion. I don’t think it’s just that simple. Cause every boss is different. With learning new moves. At least in my experience so far.
I didn't take the time to learn everything I needed to before isshin, so it took me forever to beat him. I understand the argument but he just has too many moves to learn, and if you're average or below average at this game, it's gonna be tough.
I agree. The Isshin who lived inside Genichiro was easy for a final boss. I haven't fought his other incarnation, as the Elden Ring DLC took me away from Platinuming Sekiro.
I completely agree. I died to him maybe 150 times on my first playthrough, mostly because I cheesed every difficult fight and never learned the game, but now that I've played every fromsoft game and beat sekiro multiple times, Isshin is not even the hardest boss in sekiro, let alone final bosses. I could die to every final boss at least a few times, but isshin is just too simple in comparison. And yes, Inner isshin sucks he only got like three new moves

Sekiro’s size of game is perfect. Any bigger and things would lose intention. Any smaller and too small. It’s the most complete game I’ve ever played. I’m GLAD they didn’t make DLCs or listen to comments about open exploration. Every inch of the map, narrative, and gameplay is dripping in purpose while also being digestible.
Gyoubu Masataka Oniwa's japanese introduction is miles better.
I have some that I think nobody will agree with lol.. Sekiro is a top 5 game ever for me so with this being said I’m actually very happy with it as it is. But I would actually enjoy a more open world with more to explore so I could spend more time playing the game. Also my first playthrough was so difficult that I almost quit and never finished what ended up being one of my favourite games ever. For this reason I think the game actually may be too hard and should give some mechanics to make it more accessible. (I did eventually just git good and beat it twice.)
They might add an open world in the sequel (if there was a sequel in the beginning) because in the true ending you can see sekiro and that rice girl who ate kuro (she was hungry, lore wise) both set out of japan? Or maybe they just gonna explore all of japan i can’t remember the details i can only remember the rice girl eating kuro (she was hungry, lore wise) and kuro is dead (he got eaten, lore wise) Trust me they call me the lore expert
Imagine Sekiro’s gameplay in a world like Ghost of Thushima. They would probably need to add a bunch of other mechanics like a better way of transportation (horses?), but honestly it could turn out really cool.

The game is brilliant, but the prosthetic, combat arts, and item system are pretty clunky, and only work because of the games simplicity.
Items:
Most consumables can't be bought until the lategame, with some (like the useful oil) not being purchaseable at all. This makes it so that using consumables outside of gauntlets is heavily discouraged; as repeatedly using them while learning a boss will use up what meagre quantities you find naturally, forcing you to either not use them or farm.
Snapseeds are a truly bizzare example of this, with you having 3-4 snapseeds by the point you fight Lady Butterfly at most. It's also weird that outside of her and cheesing the Monk, they're useless (I smell cut content). By the time you unlock them, you'll likely have destroyed both.
Gokans sugar is kind of useless, ceramic shards are too slow to feel good (nitpicks, granted)
Spirit Falls are kinda useless. They share SE as a resource with CA and prosthetics, but the latters at least look cool (and prosthetics can deal a lot of damage if they exploit gimmicks), while the spiritfalls can be replicated by sugars. If you didn't get them so late, they could have been a decent alternative to the sugars early on, but like they are, aside from the occasional Gachiin, I barely used them.
Likewise, coloured gourds are kinda useless. They could have been the 'ultimate' version of the debuff clearing items, not requiring any money - but aside from the fear clearing one, the consumables are better because they remove the debuff, and if you need more then 5 of them, you need to practice the fight more anyway.
Combat Arts & Skills:
Most CA are so slow it's not safe to throw them out until you've practiced a boss a lot, and their utility and damage isn't much better than that of a R1 or two + being able to move in a vast majority of cases.
This makes it hard to figure out which CA work 'well' against which enemies unless you experiment extensively...
... something that is only compounded by the fact that some CA require spirit emblems. The result? People only spam Ichimonji, because you get it early, its usecase is clear, and it doesn't cost you anything.
Mortal Draw outperforming everything is kinda silly too.
I get they wanted a rpg experience and immersion, but it feels really bad if you skill stuff like medicine, the single extra emblems, or the stealth passives instead of things that expand your moveset (even if the latters are of nearly equally little necessity, since all you need is knowing how to deflect).
... At the same time, you can fight Eshin of Misen without Mikiri. Why is Mikiri not a part of the default actions anyway? Maybe should've given out after a midboss fight or something, if they wanted you too experience 'progression'.
You're not likely to see a majority of CA in the trees without grinding or multiple playthroughs. Heck, I'm on playthrough 3 and while I've unlocked the final skills of each tree, I still haven't skilled a few minor skills.
Prosthetics:
Like CA, most of them aren't safe to throw out until you really know a boss well
Unless they exploit a gimmick (shuriken vs butterfly, lazulith vs monk, fire against redeyes, etc) they generally do subpar posture/vitality damage for how limited their uses are (during most of a first playthrough, you'll be stuck at 15 emblems - 7-5 uses for most prosthetics in a single fight).
I get they didn't want you to spam shuriken endlessly, but bosses with 3 healthbars make prosthetics kinda useless as you have to clear half the fight without using them anyhow, and if you can do that, what's their use, mechanically? Speeding it up and looking cool.
Some of the upgrades are of questionable use. Fire axe and flame spear? Lazulith Axe? Purifying Flame Vent? The flamethrower? Basically just style options on enemies that are weak to their effects.
I love Sekiro, but 90% of the stuff mentioned above you can basically just ignore by focusing on learning how to deflect properly. You have to really want to find a way to use these in order to use them. It's not really intuitive when what prosthetic or CA works really good, and unless you experiment a ton with the movesets, you're not going to figure it out.

Good takes. In most games, beginners rely on special abilities while pros can beat the game using only the basic attack. In sekiro, beginners beat the game with mostly basic attacks, while pros use the special abilities just to style on bosses.
The only special moves that feel immediately useful are firecrackers, ichimonji and mortal draw, and umbrella kinda. Other tools are too situational or feel harder to use than the basic mechanics. Now add the fact that the cost of spirit emblems keeps rising thru the game, and you have most players simply not interacting with 90% of the tools, even those that love the game and beat it 5 times and charmless.
I just don't understand why fromsoft is so obsessed with limited consumables in games where bosses can take dozens of attempts, and failing doesn't return spent resources. They have the perfect system with the hp flask, good thing they never made a game where you had to farm those charges am i right?

The Demon of Hatred is not as difficult as they say. Lady Butterfly is the second easiest boss. Great Shinobi Owl is more difficult than Owl (Father). The game areas are not so interesting to explore.

Sunken Valley is boring as shit to explore, it’s just a straight line with like 3 different kinds of enemies, so is Ashina Depths for example, but areas like Senpou Temple or Ashina Castle have so many places and secrets that go off the main path.
Umbrella is for cowards and should invalidate “hitless” runs/ boss kills.

The Shura ending is the most fitting ending for the game. This way Shura Sekiro can be the final boss if a sequel ever happens which is way more interesting than the goody two shoes endings
Shura sekiro would make for a fun boss, though the shura ending makes no sense when you consider all the kindness the sculptor, emma, kuro and isshin gave him. Kuro gave him a mission and a reason for it (he even begged him for crying out loud), after owl expected him to obey him without question. So it makes more sense for sekiro to side with kuro. He now does what he does for a legit reason, and not simply because his father tells him to.
That's why it's such a great 'bad ending', because of how much of a cautionary tale the whole Shura thing is, like this is what happens when you go bad or go off the beaten path, there are consequences to those actions and you rarely see that in games. Like you get bad endings sure, but some feel like an afterthought you know.

He said hesitation, not caution. What he meant was if you’re gonna do something, you have to fully commit to it. Remember how Genichiro had you guessing whether he was gonna do a sweep or a thrust? Hesitation is defeat right there.
Not against everything, but the quote does help alot, especially against harder bosses.
The combat gets old by the time you finish the game, being a glorified rhythm game. And with no build variety it left me with 0 desire to replay it for 5 years.
One of the best fromsoft game on the first playthrough but with no replayablity it ends up kind of average overall.

Honestly? There’s little incentive to explore once you get all prosthetic attachments. Having only your katana was excellent for the core gameplay combat loop but hurt the ability to explore the world. There was also no excuse for the minimal customization you could do to wolf. There’s really no gameplay excuse as to why different clothing pieces weren’t in the game from the jump. Elden ring caught flack for enemy reuse but it’s more apparent in sekiro bc the game is 1/4 of the size of Elden ring.
DoH is over hated and is a good boss.
Genichiro was actually a good guy and the actions of Wolf and Kuro sealed Ashina’s fate.
He was kind of a dick and some of his actions were extreme. But, he was also loyal to his home and desperate to protect it. To the point he was willing to do anything, which was kind of admirable in its own way.
Sekiro is overrated has top tier combat but thats it Everything else is just good
And that top tier combat mostly shines on bosses i remember avoiding any regular enemy after the second half bc killing them was a chore
When i say its overrated i mean its still hella a good game a big solid 8/10 but people put it as the best fromsoft game and i just dont feel it on the level of aura bloodborne ds3 or elden ring have in fact i think its only above ds2

Demon of Hatred is pretty easy. Just hack at his belly and run away from his big fire attacks
Demon of Hatred is a good boss. It’s just that people lean way too hard into the Dark Souls aspects of hit and run and ignore use of the Umbrella or just taking chip damage. What happens is they forget that this is ultimately still Sekiro and play too cautiously, allowing the Demon to do whatever he wants
Isshin is not so difficult. The demon of hatred was way harder.

Sekiro has no place in FromSoft's best game discussions because of how bad the world is. It's by far the most uninteresting world FromSoft has made, both in concept and visually.
