I just finished my studies at a local uni and I want to pursue further education abroad because I heard many positive experiences from my friends and such. However, I would like to be prepared for any possible issues that may arise that I can expect, especially like campus-life and daily struggles. Much thanks for any replies :)
Hey guys, what are your guys struggles with going studying overseas at universities?
UniversityWhere are you going? Different countries, different challenges.
Generic challenges - Being responsible for your own life and staying disciplined to see it through. E.g. no one else to do housework or wake you up for early morning lessons. - Language (non-English country) - $$$ - Transport (if car is needed for daily activities) - Crime (Higher crime rates in some countries) - Food
Edit: Amended 1st point as per comment.
Your first point should be simply about being discipline and being responsible for yourself
Good point. Edited.
sorry but how are some of these even relevant challenges?
1) go uni alr still can’t set alarm? this is an 18/21 year old you’re talking about. i think regardless of upbringing, this is the bare minimum.
2) why apply in the first place if you can’t speak the local language?
3) again, why go if your finances aren’t planned out?
4) in what scenarios are cars a necessity? sure in many cases it’ll be much more convenient with a car, but i’m sure in most countries public transport is good enough to bring you around.
5 and 6 aren’t even “struggles” of a student.
EDIT: yep, keep downvoting y’all. but please explain how these are even legitimate challenges, rather than just simple considerations one must take before heading overseas. i guarantee all those who downvote me have never studied overseas before.
4) the US? Esp if you're not living in a major city with an established public transport system.
cycle? walk? on-campus/near-campus accommodation? most of the people i know studying in the US, esp at Stanford, arguably the most out-of-the-place college, do just fine without a license.
The fact there is a contention over these points, meaning you and parent comment have opposing views, goes to show that there is something to be considered ie. These are things to consider before studying overseas
yes they are considerations but how are they challenges? the parent comment phrased it in this way, and that is what the post is asking.
you consider these things before going. meaning that finances, accommodation, language barrier and all are taken into account even before you go. rationally, you’d only go once those are figured out. therefore, when you arrive there, they shouldn’t be struggles or challenges.
struggles and challenges refer to external things which cannot be helped when you’re studying overseas — homesickness, loneliness, racism. to this point, i’d argue even the parent comment’s edited point on discipline is ridiculous.
