Why all the complaints for Apple CarPlay?💬 Discussion

I just picked up my R1S yesterday and, like many of you, have been completely blown away by this machine. The performance, the tech, the feel etc. has all surpassed my expectations, even with test driving one a month ago.

With that said, one of the big concerns I had getting into this was the lack of Apple CarPlay. I read the countless complaints here and was expecting a really poor experience.

After putting 150+ miles on the car in the past 24 hours, I don’t miss CarPlay at all. Yes, I do miss the ability to use Waze, but overall the system in place is great. Spotify works amazing, even better with Alexa. The navigation works incredible (minus Waze’s speed trap alerts) and everything just seems to run so smooth.

Aside from designating your navigation app, what else do you miss from CarPlay that Rivian’s own OS doesn’t do better?

First Adventure - A 1,900 mile round trip from IA to CO💬 Discussion
Summary

We recently completed a 1900-mile round trip from Des Moines, IA to CO in our 20" all-terrain quad-motor R1S during the Memorial Day weekend. This was our first adventure since purchasing it last December.

Call it beginner’s luck or good planning, we encountered no issues during the road trip. The R1S performed excellently, and charging was hassle-free. I planned the trip in advance using ABRP and cross-checked with Rivian’s route planner. Despite Rivian acquiring ABRP, I noticed some differences in their route planning. I also verified each suggested charging station on the PlugShare app, and selected stations with a high score and high performance/reliability in the recent days.

Overall Trip - Averaged 46 mi/h with an efficiency of 2.15 kWh

Charging

I don't have the NACS adapter, so I had to completely depend on the non-Tesla charging network. I made 13 stops for charging, with 10 of them at Electrify America (EA). Since I hadn't experienced RAN before, I made sure to visit the RAN in Denver. The other two stops were at EV Connect and ChargePoint.

All of the charging took place in NE and CO, with none in IA. I noticed that charging in NE was much cheaper because it was billed per minute instead of per kWh.

LocationTotal Energy (kWh)Total Cost ($)Avg kWh per $
CO393.317154.372.547885
NE459.04471.316.4373019
Grand Total852.361225.683.7768566

Reg EA - Contrary to some opinions, my experience with EA was pretty good. Although I would appreciated if it charged consistently at higher speeds especially if I'm using a Hyper Fast charger (up to 350 kW). Also, I purchased the EA Pass+ for $7 to get better charging rates, and I recouped the entire amount on the first day alone, saving a total of $52.56.

Highlights

One of the highlights of the trip was driving to the summit of Pike's Peak. I averaged 0.8 mi/kWh on the way up, and on the way down, it peaked at 4.01 mi/kWh and seemed to be stuck at it. I also met some fellow Rivians as well :)

Rivian Driving Assist

I must say this feature was incredibly helpful. There were a couple of instances of phantom braking, but overall, it worked great. It made the long drive relaxing and comfortable. I only wish it was available on roads other than the Interstate.

What could have made the trip better!
  • Reduced Wind Noise - On the first day of our journey, there was a brief period of windy weather lasting about 10 to 15 minutes, with a noticeable gust. This was the first time since owning the vehicle that I experienced loud wind noise, especially resembling a crack near the driver's side window. I now realize what some of you are experiencing. I understand this is a known issue and I'm guessing Rivian can fix it?.
  • Having the NACS adapter to access Tesla charging stations would have reduced my need to plan so meticulously. Considering the current pace at which they are sending out NACS adapters, I don't anticipate having one until next year. I have no interest in the A2Z adapter; I can't bring myself to purchasing one knowing I can eventually get one for free.
  • I'm aware this is an upcoming feature, but having the ability to watch entertainment on the large center display during charging stops would have made the stops enjoyable. I can't wait for this update to release.

Cabin Overheating Protection❔ Question

I can’t seem to figure out of there is a cabin overheating protection setting similar to what Tesla has.

Yesterday I had my R1S parked outside in the Arizona heat and the cabin got to 138F. I tried to precondition it before I got in, but the main display was so hot that it was not usable. The screen remained on but it acted like buttons were permanently pressed (the ś button kept repeating so I couldn’t input a navigation address). I figured it would improve after I drove for a while but an hour later the main display was still not functioning appropriately despite the display cooling down considerably (I had the main cabin set at 70F).

Has anyone else had this problem?

Seeing it to cool if the cabin heat exceeded 120F seems like a no brainer and past threads have mentioned that it is done automatically bring the scenes but this does not appear to be reality.

What’s the best way to assess value of a used R1?❔ Question

KBB and sites like this have been showing ridiculously low trade-in and private party values for the R1T and R1S. Is this what dealers are offering? Whats the best way to determine what my vehicle is worth?

Specifically, I have a 2022 limestone quad R1T black interior with 16k miles, 20” black AT wheels/tires, manual tonneau, Meridian sound system, cross bars, dual Yakima bike racks, Rmaxx running boards, ceramic tinted windows, 5 year ceramic coating, etc. Seeing really low trade-in values on KBB like 57K. Has it depreciated that much?

Which mode you guys use?❔ Question
Came across this article which says 'Conserve' mode burns out tire threads quickly.

Towing experience?❔ Question

I have a 2022 R1T and it’s been great for camping. I’m about to buy a small trailer that weighs 1500 pounds. Obviously I know the truck has plenty of power to pull it, but I was curious to know if anyone has pulled something this size and how it impacts the range. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

R1S accessories?:R1S: R1S

Howdy! Picking up my R1S quad motor this week. What are the must have accessories? I already got the A2Z NACS adapter.

Also, how are the mats that come with the vehicle, are those all-weather? If not, are Rivian mats good (from Gear Shop) or are there better aftermarket options (Weathertech?)

Please suggest, thank you!
