I know it's been a couple of weeks since the birth certificate and naturalisation certificate crazes, but I just collected my Polish birth certificate today from the Civil Registry Office. I am not a Polish citizen yet, but before you apply for citizenship you need to get your original birth certificate translated and entered into the Polish Birth Registry. I'm still a couple of years away from applying for Polish citizenship, but I thought I'd get ahead of the game. 😁🇵🇱

I'd be interested to know if any other countries allow you to enter foreign civil registration documents into their own registers.

Exactly. Most people leave it until they are actually in the process of applying , but (afaik) you need to submit your Polish birth certificate as part of your application. This is also true for people applying for citizenship by descent.

Yes! And it's equivalent to the birth certificate that a Polish citizen born in Poland would receive (although they have only been using this modern format since 2015). I'm a British citizen who moved to Poland almost ten years ago, and I'm going to apply for Polish citizenship in the next few years once I'm eligible.

I think the Netherlands has something similar, but you have to be Dutch citizen according to a quick google, I vaguely remember reading they used to give it to people with Permeant Residence,

So could you have got this if you where NOT living in Poland?

As could a person from lets say Canada get one, who has never even visited Poland?

Interesting 🤔 I wonder why it would be necessary for permanent residents of The Netherlands...

But to answer your question - yes! If you're applying for Polish citizenship by descent, it's fairly common to do it using an agency or a lawyer and it can all be done on your behalf without even needing to visit Poland once.

However, if you take that one step further - for example, if my grandmother (who has never left the UK) tried to enter her birth certificate into the Polish Register, I have no idea if it would be possible. I don't see a reason why it wouldn't be, but the office clerks may question it more than someone with a clear connection to Poland. We'd have to dive deep into the legislation to see if there are any limitations. 😄

I think it is the way the bureaucracy works,

My googling is failing me at the moment,

Two things the Netherlands is a Civil Law Country,

And the I think the term for Permeant Residency is "status holders"

Foreigners can register birth marriage etc in Poland if they have original verified copy of related documents. They will keep your original and give you the polish one

Well done for getting through Polish paperwork!

Just be aware that when you make your applications, you may need to get a new certificate issued.

For some paperwork (in this case, the Polish version of my marriage certificate for my partner’s residency application), the certificate needs to have been issued within a certain timeframe.

Thanks, yeah I'm aware that most of the time, certificates need to have been issued recently. But that doesn't bother me too much - I think you can apply for them online nowadays.

You can apply for one online if you have a profil zaufany, the Polish version of an electronic signature. I applied for one, signed through my Polish bank, and they even sent it to me in Switzerland! It was interesting, especially that you still pay 22 PLN, but the registered letter to Switzerland costs 19 PLN, so most of my fee went to that apparently...

Yeah had a similar thing happen. I sent birth certificates to Burgenland, Austria for Apostilles. The Embassy 2 months later sent me a registered letter (Costed them like CAD$11) to say, we have your Apostilles. Pay EUR 60 to the Burgenland Government within 2 weeks of receiving this letter to get them from us. Paid Burgenland via Wise and emailed the Attache who sent the letter (spoke with him over the phone as he asked for proof to be emailed to him). Week later I received another registered letter with the apostilles. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs never got any money, atleast directly from me. Doubt they would've from Burgenland. So they wasted like $22 in postage when they could've paid like $1.50 for each of the oversized letters. Or atleast saved the postage on the second one when they didn't know when I received it.

Looking at your previous post on this sub, as a holder of a karta pobytu you'd definitely be eligible for one! But you should know better than to assume you could get one by tomorrow - Polish bureaucracy has other plans for you, my friend... 🤣 Mine only took a couple of weeks though - it was a pretty straightforward process!

Congrats! How far away are you from applying for citizenship?

That's interesting. For Portugal, non-Portuguese become Portuguese when they are issued a Portuguese birth certificate.

The new birth certificate itself is the end result of the nationality process and forms the basis for subsequently getting your national ID card and passport.

That makes a lot of sense - does that mean Portuguese birth certificates issued at the end of the application process are basically your certificate of naturalisation? Or do you also get one of those? 😄

It's basically your certificate of naturalisation or attribution (for those with familial ties). That assento is what makes you now Portuguese.

yes every korean citizen must be registered 가족관계등록부 (family relationship record)

if you approved naturalization district office makes new family relationship record

if you dead or no longer korean citizen record will be closed

Interesting! I think family records are a great idea in theory - it's annoying when certain records aren't as specific as you need them to be sometimes, so it's good to have a record with all the main information about people in the same family.

unfortunately korean government issues variant certificates..

basic certificate: your information your name date of birth place of birth change name naturalization and your death

important thing is your parents information doesn't appear if you need parents information you need request "family relation certificate"

marriage relation certificate: equivalent to marriage and divorce certificate

Yeah it's really smart! The paper is high quality too and there are a few watermarks. IMO, the only thing that would make it even better is if there was a holographic sticker (I feel like that weird black/grey square in the top-right corner would be the perfect place for one...)

It would be an interesting experiment to see if they'd allow you to enter your birth certificate (assuming you have no current ties to Poland). Because, after looking through some of the legislation, I haven't been able to find exact details about who is able to enter a foreign birth certificate into the Polish Birth Registry except the following:

"An application for the transcription of a foreign birth certificate may be submitted by: "- the person to whom the act relates "- parents of a minor child "- a person who demonstrates a legal interest in the transcription of another person's birth certificate"

and

"Persons residing outside the Republic of Poland may also use the services of the Polish consul to have their birth certificate transcribed. They will then receive the necessary information and pay the appropriate fees at the appropriate consulate."

Certain countries' birth certificates need an apostille as well as a translation, and if you don't speak Polish you're supposed to bring a translator with you to the appointment (although in reality they usually don't need to be an official translator, just someone who can translate for you), so it could be a costly process. But I'd be fascinated to know if it works for absolutely anyone.

As a foreigner how you got your parents name on the polish birth certificate? When I did it with my German birth certificate transfering it to polish birth certificate there was no parents inside 🤣 You got the birth certificate immediately?

I just noticed you asked if I got the certificate immediately. No, it took just over two weeks for them to process it and call me to say it was ready. According to some websites online they say that "simple" applications should take no longer than a month.

Does the original German certificate have information about your parents on it? Because they only transfer information from the original onto the Polish one (using the translation of the original, of course). My UK birth certificate doesn't have my parents' dates of birth, therefore that space on the Polish certificate was left blank.

However, it's weird that they didn't add the parents to yours at all, because I've heard other Brits having trouble as they tried to use their shortened birth certificate (which you get for free when first registering your child's birth, and which doesn't have information about the parents on it). The Polish authorities demand that Brits use the full version of the birth certificate, I assumed it was because they need to at least put the parents' names on the Polish one...

In Germany you can get a international birth certificate which is in all languages of the EU. In this there is no parents inside. Only in the normal German birth certificate are the parents

Ah I see, that makes sense then. You're probably able to correct the register by getting your original German certificate translated. Not sure if there is any benefit to doing that... 😄
