Direct to FLETC. PRLEA not required. However, last applicant pool that made it through the first few stages was heavier on prior law enforcement and/or vets. Not sure as to the final break down but the representation by current seasonal NPS law enforcement was notable.

I was one of the last pool. Been waiting on backgrounds for 6 months now. I can confirm a lot of vets and law enforcement during the hiring process.

Yea, its the slowest process I have ever had. I applied in May of 2023 did both interviews, medical, fingerprints, then initiated my background late November and did the face to face background interview. I have a secret clearance, but from what I heard from other rangers is NPS background checks are really backed up.

Oh sweet, I have some LE experience but didn't really want to spend 5k on going to PRLEA, i tried last time and didnt hear anything but ill give it another go this time around!

I would not count on simple LE at this point unless you have deep experience. It is clearly a plus, but if you are on the open to public posting you will be up against vets with points and others that rank well other KSA's. To simplify: The overall selection is made on a national basis, then an approved list is sent to individual parks in later stages. A few parks have been burnt recently. It will be interesting to see if that impacts the decision process.

I have not figured out the secret yet. At times they select those with near zero LE experience, but that must check boxes other than vets. Passing over those with years more LE and good reputations.

The mix is mostly made up of vets, other LE and prior NPS seasonals (LE and non-LE) plus others. Some have been applying every time a FLETC posting is made for a few years now. Tends to be a select applicant pool.

This is awesome! I just took the PelletB in CA with the intent to apply to county.

I’m a woman USMC veteran with prior certified LE experience, so I’d for sure hit veterans preference. Does the LE position require 2 years of college credits? I’ve only finished one year. That has been my application barrier thus far.

The website for my state listed college credit requirement, but the government job application for recruit position I am applying to this month (after my exam score comes back) did not list college credits as a requirement.

I believe you would qualify based on experience as long as you know how to format a USAjobs resume, which is the key to hitting all the key points to get referred.

You will have to read official job questionnaire when it comes out. From what I remember the some of the minimum qualifications read like this. 4 yr degree OR 1 yr experience etc. The definition of that experience is pretty wide. That gets you up to the GL 5 level. Read the details closely

U.S. Park Rangers fall under the 0025 series, we are looking into reclassification as 1801s but no news as of yet.

There is no EMT prerequisite as we are primarily focused on Law Enforcement Officers first.

If a park wants to require you have it later down the line they will provide it.

New to this kind of announcement, will it have specific locations? Or is it a fill by agency need basis?

There is a canvassing period on what parks will have seats and then they will give a sales pitch on why to choose that park. Usually it consists of 5 or so units.

last round had about 20-30 parks on there, pretty wide variety. This is the first announcement of the FY, so expect a lot of locations and a larger applicant pool

If I don't have LE experience or veterans preference and turning 37 in the fall, is it worth even applying? I'm a current federal employee, I have medical training and a masters degree, but not sure if that carries any weight? Are the interpretation positions opening during this time as well or just LE?

You could always apply and have them tell you no.

The cutoff would be if you turn 37 before entry on duty. The hiring process takes a little, but if you're 36, when you apply, it could be waived.

Interp hires when they have openings, not on a planned national level.

If you are just interested in doing interp or SAR work, I would not look into being LE as we are looking to hire those interested in LE rather than general ranger work.

There are general ranger positions where you only do SAR and EMS calls seasonally that you may want to look into. However, the openings were some time ago.

Thanks for the information. I am definitely interested in LE work, and I think I would be good at it, but if they wouldn't take me for that I would consider the others as well. I appreciate your insight.

It is very possible for you to be considered if you do not turn 37 until the fall. The suspected EOD for these will be the fall so there is a slight chance.

I say apply and see how it goes, make sure your resume reflects your skills and if you need assistance do not be afraid to reach out.
