The union prevented his firing. I think the “financial settlement” part may have finally motivated angel to leave. That and he’s 62, so he may just want to retire
I'm not buying the "just want to retire" bit for the simple fact that this is happening in the middle of the season. Between seasons, sure... but he's abandoning his crew mid stream. That's not "It's time to hang it up" behavior.
I know the union prevented his firing, but it seems odd that this "settlement" is only on the table now in the middle of a year.
It’s finally a mainstream media story how bad he is. Casual baseball fans are totally aware of how bad he is now. People who follow the game closely have known for a long time but when that’s the only umpire known by name because he’s so bad it’s a problem.
If my employer paid me to leave and paid me a significant portion of the amount I stood to earn in the remaining years before retirement, I would probably take it. You don't have to buy it if you don't want to, but if he was going to be fired, he would have been fired long ago. He has been bad at his job and antagonized the league in 2017 with a racial discrimination lawsuit. The union protected him and he wasn't going to voluntarily retire 10-15 years early. With 2 or 3 years left until target retirement, why not?
Idk how tight those crews are, but I imagine they're not unaccustomed to mid-season changes due to injury, vacation or whatever other reasons. And yes, they do get vacation in season - four weeks of it
Edited my comment to sort of address that, sorry i didn't think to include it initially. Also, people retire whenever it pleases them, in many industries
I will say by a lot of accounts he seems like a good human being and statistically speaking he wasn't the WORST umpire. But he was awful at his job that couldn't put his own personal agenda aside and call a neutral game. Good riddance
That any single umpire could get so bad of a reputation without any recourse for years means the system needs to be reevaluated. Umpires simply must be made to be accountable for their actions. There’s plenty of metrics now to be able to judge how effective an umpire is each year. There should be accuracy standards that umpires have to adhere to each and every year. If they don’t? Don’t let them behind the plate. Stick them at a base where they can’t do damage. There’s no reason every member of a crew has to call balls and strikes if they aren’t calling them effectively.
The entire issue of robo umps is because of sub standard umpires that ruin it for a large amount of umps that aren’t consistently bad at their job.
The dumbest part of it all. MLB umpires are graded with a margin of error 2 inches off the plate. Which means to get the 97% accuracy figure umpires and ump humpers boast about. It includes pitches nearly 3.5" off the plate in the data. So even if they did have a recourse, MLB would be using obviously faulty data.
I hope whatever stadium hosts his last game sends him off in the worst way possible. Songs like N*Sync’s ‘Bye, Bye, Bye’ every middle inning, chants of ‘BYE, BYE, AN-GEL, 👏🏼,👏🏼, 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼’ , SOMETHING to give him a good old fashioned ‘don’t let the door hit you on your way out’
Actually it was called a retirement by Hernandez but the replay shows he was clearly fired.
