Hello! I am from sweden and would love to do a month hiking of the pct in july/aug. Where do you think the bubble will be by then, or other bice sections of the trail?
Just checking, do you want to be in the bubble, or avoid the bubble?
Haha, in the bubble
Ashland had a huge bubble for 4th July last year
That's early in lower snow years. Last year was an exception because of the snow. A lot of people skipped up.
Yep. I was in Kennedy Meadows North on July 4,2016 (started April 19 and hiked straight through).
I was in NorCal near Burney Falls July 4th with a March 29 start.
I'm doing some math class numbers here, so don't axe me if I'm wrong.
The PCT is 2,650 miles long, and the "average" hiker hikes anywhere from 15-20 miles a day. Let's be conservative and say it's 15 miles/day. "Most" hikers start in late April or early May. Let's be fun and say April 20th (hehe). You're giving a pretty big window of all of July and August, so let's go somewhere in the middle and say July 31st. That's like, 102 days give or take. Granted that's NO zeros, so perhaps we should be a bit more giving and call it 115 days.
So if my Math teacher Mr. Mann taught me anything, that would be 15 * 115 = 1725. Mile 1725 is going to put "most" people in your bubble somewhere in Northern California/Southern Oregon. If that's the case, you may spend some time doing Crater Lake, the Three Sisters Wilderness, Mt. Hood and perhaps a jaunt into Bend, Eugene or Portland. Columbia River gorge is also beautiful, in fact I'm a big sucker for the State of Oregon in general so I say go there south to North if you're looking for the "bubble".
Wow, thsnks!
I started March 29 and was at the Oregon border July 19.
Which you absolutely should because almost everyone does start in the 3 months bubble. If you go to socal in August and expect to see a bunch of thru hikers you will be disappointed because they will all be up in Oregon or Washington at that point
NorCal and Oregon.
