My 2011 Altima is at 130k, never missed an oil change and never had a problem. I feel like sometimes people think they aren’t going to last so they don’t bother to take care of them and then it’s self fulfilling

Tbf the early 2000 Nissan are much better then the mid to late 2010s. From what I understand quality went down hill as the renault Nissan partnership progressed which was post 2001

Most Nissan CVTs need a fluid flush at 60k... Surprise when the trannys fail at 90k. I wonder why.
You can't run them forever on the original trans fluid like your regular autos.
Flushing is a terrible idea for any transmission, let alone a CVT. Do a fluid change, as in drain and refill, bonus points if you can also do the filter. Don't flush a transmission, really ever. And if you must for some wild reason, take it to a shop that specializes in transmissions.
My post was that you should do what the manual says. A lot of people will just say flush and changed interchangeably even though you're correct there is a difference.

I've talked to 3 customers in the past week, they all said their CVT's went up between 100k and 150k
yeah, i’m well aware it could go soon and have test driven a few cars, but for me 13 years and 130k miles has been plenty reliable for me. Did everything I needed it to do. I don’t necessarily think a transmission going out at 150k means it’s unreliable. That’s a lot of load.
Pre 2013 Nissan were over built and able to handle stress better than ones manufactured now. Driving like an idiot doesn't help the longevity of the car, this is true, but there's a reason that cvt transmission slips in more Nissans than any other car.
I had a 2015 altima with 65k on it. Cvt was going out and I got rid of it. 60k for a Nissan used to be barely broken in.
I also had a 94 altimas with 180k and never had a problem, aside from alternator and brakes, traded that for a 2000 maxima and had that car for 15 years. Never a problem.

I’m at 102,000 miles on a 2019 Altima. kept up-to-date with pretty much everything, just have my inspection done and all I needed was tires. Haven’t had a single issue with this car once.
It's an engine oil reminder that's set by the owner of the car to remind them an oil change is due. The guy probably just never reset it. It means nothing. The low tire pressure probably just means he has aftermarket wheels which didn't come with TPMS sensors. He's most likely tracking the car which is why his fuel is low (weight savings) and his speed is high.

My 2008 altima just died with 200k miles on the original cvt /engine. Only died because engine has 0 compression and I can't afford a new engine. Otherwise, I loved that car lol

I’ve have owned three Nissans. 2008 Sentra, 2012 Sentra and now a 2021 Maxima. The only reason I don’t have the 2008 Sentra anymore is because it was in a wreck. The ‘12 has 218k miles and counting. Everything original. All I have had to do is regular oil changes and tune ups and maintenance. The A/C compressor went out but that was after 10 years of wear and tear. Nothing is built to last forever. Do your research on the weak spots of your car and keep watch. If you take care of your things, they will last.

Actually it would not 🤷🏾♂️ When it all comes down to it, all cars need proper maintenance to get the best possible outcome. You are severely diminishing your car’s life not treating or driving it with some sense. I’ve seen Toyotas die before their time due to neglect as well. Each car make has its weak points but they are exacerbated by the driver that thinks they can just crank up and drive. Doesn’t check/change the oil, drives the fuel tank down to nothing, the tires haven’t been rotated or aligned since it was installed, hasn’t been tuned up since it was built. More times than not, a car dying on you is from user error.

I bought a 2024 Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek, before hitting 1k miles, the transmission seemed like it blew up, car stopped in the middle of a road way and I thought it was done for. Took it to the dealer and they had it for a whole week, and told me it was a “grounding issue”. That was a couple months ago, hasn’t happened again.
I also have a 2012 Honda accord, I abuse that thing to its limit each and everyday, butttttt I keep it maintained, it’s almost at 210k miles and runs perfectly.
So yes Nissans are unreliable, I’ve had 3 Nissans in the past, yet the Honda has stayed with me the whole time.

Most people that say Nissans are unreliable don’t service them properly. The CVT needs serviced every 30k.
Newer CVTs are probably ok every 30k miles, although older ones like my 2011 Quest really need service every 15k miles. Yes, a spill and fill of NS2 every 15k miles is money, although it is less expensive than another CVT.

My wife refused to take her 2016 Sentra anywhere BUT the dealership because 'they know what they are doing' . She took it in all the time for every single scheduled maintenance. They claimed that the CVT didn't need anything for 80k miles... Well, turns out that thing crapped out at 79k. Of course they come back and say it should have been serviced every 30k miles AFTER it craps out.

A car is only as good as its driver. 8 years and I’ve never had a problem with this one. Service is important and how you handle the car and its cvt is as important.

Just throwing it out there, I just hit 160k on my 15 altima. Oil changes done every 4-5k. Gas is rarely low with fuel injection cleaners every 5k. Only had one big problem which cost me like 800 from dealer to fix. Perfect car, especially when I do my 6hr drives for food!
How often did you service the CVT? I do it every 50k. I really want it to last as much as it can
First CVT is done at 90K/100K, after that every 30K. It is an easy process to do, but unfortunately I do this at the dealer since you get the warranty as long you do it there. Cost about $350 at my local dealer (did it at two dealers) It shouldnt be any higher. Call around.

Nissan redesigned the cvt in 2020 and from what I've seen it's a lot better not nearly as many premature failures but as said in a comment above they absolutely should've be serviced every 30k miles no exceptions

Depends on the vehicle. 2015+ muranos, pathfinders, and maximas have minimal CVT issues. Ive done 2 CVTs in these three models (1 maxima, 1 pathfinder) Compared to about ~15 sentras/versas/nv200s ~5-10altimas ~15 rogues and exactly 3jukes. Screw Jukes…
For how much abuse the altimas require on average in order to start showing consistent problems, I'd say they're pretty darn reliable.
Tbf that’s because you can do this (low gas, oil, tire pressure, etc.) with a handful of other makes/models without needing maintenance and can go a very long time in such situations some of which are even iconic and popular because of this. For example Toyota and Honda. Other examples (ironically despite their outlooks and reputation) some German makes/models like some Mercedes and BMW. Newer Nissans just happen to be one of the few that will be abused because they’re sold as a comparable and competitive alternative to other similar priced cars with more abusive reliability reputations. That all being said though it very well could just be lights/sensors and everything is actually fine besides the dash on this Altima :/

Jatco transmissions are trash. You can prolong the life of these transmissions with proper care and good driving but sometimes they just die anyways. Friend bought a brand new Altima in 2019 and the transmission died at 7k miles. Nissan makes some good models but I’d absolutely avoid anything with a CVT.
Meanwhile my 09 Nissan has original spark plugs because it’s well taken care of.

my ex had a hand me down 2010 Altima. His dad bought it new, drove it a few years, gave it to my ex and he drove it for even more years, and last I saw the car it had nearly 200k miles on it and it was still very reliable.

The stupidest thing a person can do is rev a car with low oil/needing changed oil. I’ve never experienced it before but my dad’s Pacifica was low on oil and when I gave it gas it felt like the car stalled, scary experience.

Problem is they are dogging out a CvT and not doing maintenance on it. Suppose to fluid flush and filter change a CvT every 30k miles. This is why they blowing up 80k-100k miles.
Best car I ever had was a Nissan Cube. All I ever did was routine maintenance. Oil change, brakes, changed the rotors once. Ran like a dream until it was totaled by a tractor trailer. I'm still mad about it to this day. I'm 30 and that was my first car. I'm now on my second car, an actual piece of shit: a Chevrolet Cruze

Any car will last you a lifetime with proper maintenance. When I was in high school I treated my car like shit and it died on me at 130k I was naive and blamed the car brand and it's unreliability. Became a mechanic and now I have cars at 300k plus running as good as new. It's how good you take care of them and keep up with them

Nissans have amazing engines. Easily 200k cars if you service them at proper intervals. Its the body style that keeps them unpopular(and the medias hard-on for the very deservedly awesome Toyota as well I think). I drive a 2021 Armada and I love it. But I get that the designs are quirky. Their sedans and the Murano are particularly hideous to me at least.

Sad because the Altima SV AWD is actually the last of its kind with a NA 2.O 4 cyl. The Altima is a an easy 300k car, but unfortunately people that get Altima’s, low credit / no credit buyers bc they can’t get another new car.. those people usually don’t care of their own life let alone their car.

Had an altima try and kill me on a test drive, throttle tip in was somehow stuck so any touch of gas would launch the car, brakes reacted same way, dealer said nothing was wrong with it.

doing 120 with low gas wont hurt your car. Oil change lights are on milage timers and not necessarily reset when serviced, and TPMS very notoriously will come on in almost any car regardless of maintenance history.

That's not the case with everyone. My 2016 Altima's transmission is gone. It only has 63K and I've done my oil changes, etc... Nissan is the only car company , from what I've been told, that are making the CVT Transmissions. Many of them are dying WELL before they should. Nissan won't do anything about it and they won't recall the CVT's. I always put gas in my car at 1/4 tank. It's going to cost about $5300 for a rebuilt one. use to like Nissan, but NEVER again!!!

Nissan Altimas would be pretty reliable if they had automatic transmissions or manual transmissions. Instead, they throw a continuously variable transmission (CVT) in there, and they're suffering because of it.
They so badly want people to like their xtronic cvt, but many people, including me, will not buy the car because of the CVT.
The CVT is known for needing replacement. Often more than once. Sometimes 3 - 4 times.
Nissan started using the cvt in 2007. Before that the cars were pretty reliable.
If Nissan would sell an automatic altima, I can guarantee there would be an Altima sitting In my garage right now.

Gas is the only main issue. I put a reminder on my car and sometimes forget to reset it. Tire pressure could be anything from low tire pressure to sensor going bad or out like mine

My 'collision avoidance disabled' light comes on for practically no reason at all some times on my 2021 Sentra. I could simply be driving along with no bad weather on a sunny day and it comes on. I've even thought perhaps the sensor on the front was dirty but even after a good car wash, it will still come on. I've had the dealership look at it and even they have no clue why it comes on. Otherwise, it has no other affects on the car whatsoever.
Perhaps stuff like this is why some people say Nissans are unreliable, too.

Not an Altima, but I had a family owned 06 pathfinder with over 280K miles before full transmission failure, visited the shop for preventative maintenance when needed and went through at least two transmission drains before I traded it in for its worth in scrap.

Bought a brand new Altima because we wanted a “reliable family car” for the wife. Kept up with every service needed for her, to include a transmission fluid service at just over 35k, and we drove it very conservatively. 48k miles… transmission was shot and had to be replaced. Nissan sucks.
I had 08 Altima with 200k same engine and trans. Ran a rough idle occasionally. Got $3k trade for it on a Lincoln town car. Second town car I’ve owned nothing compares to these cars

The thing is, Nissans cars can’t take as much of a beating that Toyota/Honda can, that’s why people say they’re unreliable. They are reliable IF you take care of them, don’t drive them like shit all the time, and do your maintenance. I personally like to do the oil changes, brake checks, transmission fluid changes, all those things earlier than the manufacture recommended. You can do the manufacture recommended miles but it’ll last longer if you do it a bit earlier.
I move cars around a CarMax (US retailer) reconditioning hub for a living. Maintenance = longevity, regardless of make; but Toyotas are what they say they are. Autistic alliteration at the end there wheeee.
