Came across a reel with some dude in a Altima doing 120 with low gas, oil change due, and low tire pressure. This is why yall altimas break down then you wanna say it’s “unreliable”
My 2011 Altima is at 130k, never missed an oil change and never had a problem. I feel like sometimes people think they aren’t going to last so they don’t bother to take care of them and then it’s self fulfilling
My 2001 Altima hit 354k on the original engine and transmission before my daughter hit a Mercedes with it.
Tbf the early 2000 Nissan are much better then the mid to late 2010s. From what I understand quality went down hill as the renault Nissan partnership progressed which was post 2001
That’d have a 4-speed auto, not the CVT everyone complains about
The CVT is hot trash. Mother in law and 2 sister in laws had 2020- 2022's nine made it over 40k with that transmission
Correct
That’s why you don’t give kids Nissans… it makes it impossible for them to be good drivers…
The 01 is not a burner. Was a family daily for my wife, myself, Two others, and then her first.
The proud, the few , still running and maintained Nissans with original engines
Same here. Had a 2017 V6 now I got a 2023 turbo. Always…. Went to get serviced. Never had a problem. Except for the suspension bushings after 100,000 miles.
Pretty much this. We also expect the problems from the big 3 so it's not talked about as much.
Most Nissan CVTs need a fluid flush at 60k... Surprise when the trannys fail at 90k. I wonder why.
You can't run them forever on the original trans fluid like your regular autos.
Flushing is a terrible idea for any transmission, let alone a CVT. Do a fluid change, as in drain and refill, bonus points if you can also do the filter. Don't flush a transmission, really ever. And if you must for some wild reason, take it to a shop that specializes in transmissions.
My post was that you should do what the manual says. A lot of people will just say flush and changed interchangeably even though you're correct there is a difference.
My sister does this, since she was “gifted” it and did not want it her logic is to break the car so my mom can see that the car was unreliable from the start.
Fuckin pathetic species.
Giga consumerist social media useless phone zombie human.
New breed
The entitlement is wild. If she does manage to break it I hope she gets gifted another Nissan lol.
Exactly. And then they swear up and down that the should have went with a different car.
I've talked to 3 customers in the past week, they all said their CVT's went up between 100k and 150k
yeah, i’m well aware it could go soon and have test driven a few cars, but for me 13 years and 130k miles has been plenty reliable for me. Did everything I needed it to do. I don’t necessarily think a transmission going out at 150k means it’s unreliable. That’s a lot of load.
Pre 2013 Nissan were over built and able to handle stress better than ones manufactured now. Driving like an idiot doesn't help the longevity of the car, this is true, but there's a reason that cvt transmission slips in more Nissans than any other car.
I had a 2015 altima with 65k on it. Cvt was going out and I got rid of it. 60k for a Nissan used to be barely broken in.
I also had a 94 altimas with 180k and never had a problem, aside from alternator and brakes, traded that for a 2000 maxima and had that car for 15 years. Never a problem.
Did you service the CVT?
Yes I have been doing drain and fills every 30k
Aside from having to replace the ac compressor or whatever it’s called my 2011 Nissan still chugging along lol. It’s only at 108K
I had one that was the same year it was my first car and it broke down at 150k miles (transmission failure) the only reason that happened though was because no one had changed the transmission fluid since it had been purchased
“All those maintenance intervals are just suggestions” 😂 You don’t have to do any of it for real. Lol
Facts
Most of them have never even read the owners manual. It tells you let the car warm up to a slow start and don’t force the transmission give the CVT time to shift gears. People driving like it’s Daytona. What’s the rush? Leave your house on time lol
Facts! 😂 My car doesn’t move until the RPMs settle down close to idling. That’s how I know everything is ready to move lol
I’m at 102,000 miles on a 2019 Altima. kept up-to-date with pretty much everything, just have my inspection done and all I needed was tires. Haven’t had a single issue with this car once.
It's an engine oil reminder that's set by the owner of the car to remind them an oil change is due. The guy probably just never reset it. It means nothing. The low tire pressure probably just means he has aftermarket wheels which didn't come with TPMS sensors. He's most likely tracking the car which is why his fuel is low (weight savings) and his speed is high.
To busy blasting raegaeton swerving in traffic on a wet road.
My 2008 altima just died with 200k miles on the original cvt /engine. Only died because engine has 0 compression and I can't afford a new engine. Otherwise, I loved that car lol
They are still piles of dung. I work on all makes and models. With the exception of MBZ and the even bigger pos the BMW there is nothing worse than a Nissan
I’ve have owned three Nissans. 2008 Sentra, 2012 Sentra and now a 2021 Maxima. The only reason I don’t have the 2008 Sentra anymore is because it was in a wreck. The ‘12 has 218k miles and counting. Everything original. All I have had to do is regular oil changes and tune ups and maintenance. The A/C compressor went out but that was after 10 years of wear and tear. Nothing is built to last forever. Do your research on the weak spots of your car and keep watch. If you take care of your things, they will last.
You could drive a Toyota like that and it would be fine
Actually it would not 🤷🏾♂️ When it all comes down to it, all cars need proper maintenance to get the best possible outcome. You are severely diminishing your car’s life not treating or driving it with some sense. I’ve seen Toyotas die before their time due to neglect as well. Each car make has its weak points but they are exacerbated by the driver that thinks they can just crank up and drive. Doesn’t check/change the oil, drives the fuel tank down to nothing, the tires haven’t been rotated or aligned since it was installed, hasn’t been tuned up since it was built. More times than not, a car dying on you is from user error.
Guy driving doesn’t know how to do his own oil change and pays $150 per change like a chump probably.
I bought a 2024 Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek, before hitting 1k miles, the transmission seemed like it blew up, car stopped in the middle of a road way and I thought it was done for. Took it to the dealer and they had it for a whole week, and told me it was a “grounding issue”. That was a couple months ago, hasn’t happened again.
I also have a 2012 Honda accord, I abuse that thing to its limit each and everyday, butttttt I keep it maintained, it’s almost at 210k miles and runs perfectly.
So yes Nissans are unreliable, I’ve had 3 Nissans in the past, yet the Honda has stayed with me the whole time.
Good don’t tell them. Less altimas on the road missing bumpers driving like asshats.
At least in an Altima their marked he could get a ford next for all we know
Safest altima driver
Kyle after 1 monster.
fuckin kyles. ITS ALWAYS A DAMN KYLE
Or Dominique on her way home from work
I see your Kyle and raise you a Jedidiah.
First of all, trying to take a picture of the dash while going 120 tells you all you need to know about the driver and his decision-making skills
There is so much more on this dash to tell you about this person
That's not 120. Lame. If you can't snap a photo at 116mph safely, are you really a driver?
Something something gap. Something something racing driver. Rip senna
I was just a courier. If you've never taken a car beyond 130, have you really lived? It's OK to be scared. Don't judge the rest of us by your fears.
172 in my C5 vette. Not really sure what that has to do with my senna comment tho.
If you're trying to take a photo at 116 or of your speedo in general you gotta slow car.
That’s just BAE mode on an Altima. Nothing to see here.
Most people that say Nissans are unreliable don’t service them properly. The CVT needs serviced every 30k.
Newer CVTs are probably ok every 30k miles, although older ones like my 2011 Quest really need service every 15k miles. Yes, a spill and fill of NS2 every 15k miles is money, although it is less expensive than another CVT.
Shoot. I do it every 50k is that fine?
My wife refused to take her 2016 Sentra anywhere BUT the dealership because 'they know what they are doing' . She took it in all the time for every single scheduled maintenance. They claimed that the CVT didn't need anything for 80k miles... Well, turns out that thing crapped out at 79k. Of course they come back and say it should have been serviced every 30k miles AFTER it craps out.
Sorry to hear that. Sometimes the users on this sub have more knowledge than the dealership service writers.
That’s utterly embarrassing for a modern automatic lmao. Every 30k? Even my old altimas maintenance schedule didn’t have it listed that low. People still defending any CVT these days is hilarious. They belong on snow mobiles, mopeds, and golf carts. Not cars.
Its just inspect every 30k. Theres no actual replace cvt fluid scheduled by Nissan. Only inspect
A car is only as good as its driver. 8 years and I’ve never had a problem with this one. Service is important and how you handle the car and its cvt is as important.
Seems the owners are unreliable
Quarter tank of gas, cops just past…just seen a big ol’ ass!
It's Saturday!
Sticky, icky, icky
Just throwing it out there, I just hit 160k on my 15 altima. Oil changes done every 4-5k. Gas is rarely low with fuel injection cleaners every 5k. Only had one big problem which cost me like 800 from dealer to fix. Perfect car, especially when I do my 6hr drives for food!
How often did you service the CVT? I do it every 50k. I really want it to last as much as it can
First CVT is done at 90K/100K, after that every 30K. It is an easy process to do, but unfortunately I do this at the dealer since you get the warranty as long you do it there. Cost about $350 at my local dealer (did it at two dealers) It shouldnt be any higher. Call around.
I have a 15 Altima too with 138k miles. What else service you had to do? Injections cleaners necessary?
Ive seen some altimas that look like theyve been through WW2 …that being said it tends to be more of a driver problem than car reliability per se.
Driving almost 120 mph, low gas, plus oil change needed 😆 Probably metal on metal with their brakes right now
No gas, service engine soon light, and doing 120 while on their phone. Let me guess a Nissan altima and late child support payments
My Nissan Rouge SL 2009 at 60,000 miles. The CVT transmission stopped working, doesn’t shift forward and reverse. No more Nissan for me.
That was my subaru experience , CVT in a non-commercial setting, is such trash.
Altima owners are the problem. They never perform maintenance and they beat the piss out of the car. Learn proper vehicle maintenance and drive like a normal human.
Its always the owners. My parents have a 2013 Rogue with the CVT and they have done all the services and cvt fluid change and they have a 165,000 mi Nissan thats only issue was the spark plugs
People think it’s a Toyota. It’s not a Toyota. You have to baby the hell out of that transmission and if you can’t invest in your car don’t buy a Nissan. I love my Rogue it’s a very comfy ride.
Altimas are reliable until someone like this gets it, neglects maintenance, and it craps out at 80k
How about 2023 And 2024 CVTs, have they gotten better?
Nissan redesigned the cvt in 2020 and from what I've seen it's a lot better not nearly as many premature failures but as said in a comment above they absolutely should've be serviced every 30k miles no exceptions
Every 30 or 30 thousand miles
I didn’t know this until my 2022 Altima hit 50k. Got it serviced immediately when I found out. Think it will be ok?
Depends on the vehicle. 2015+ muranos, pathfinders, and maximas have minimal CVT issues. Ive done 2 CVTs in these three models (1 maxima, 1 pathfinder) Compared to about ~15 sentras/versas/nv200s ~5-10altimas ~15 rogues and exactly 3jukes. Screw Jukes…
For how much abuse the altimas require on average in order to start showing consistent problems, I'd say they're pretty darn reliable.
Tbf that’s because you can do this (low gas, oil, tire pressure, etc.) with a handful of other makes/models without needing maintenance and can go a very long time in such situations some of which are even iconic and popular because of this. For example Toyota and Honda. Other examples (ironically despite their outlooks and reputation) some German makes/models like some Mercedes and BMW. Newer Nissans just happen to be one of the few that will be abused because they’re sold as a comparable and competitive alternative to other similar priced cars with more abusive reliability reputations. That all being said though it very well could just be lights/sensors and everything is actually fine besides the dash on this Altima :/
Needs service, almost on E and doing 120+ 💀🤦🏾♂️😂
I bet the transmission fluid has never been changed either
Sexyy Red at max volume too
Jatco transmissions are trash. You can prolong the life of these transmissions with proper care and good driving but sometimes they just die anyways. Friend bought a brand new Altima in 2019 and the transmission died at 7k miles. Nissan makes some good models but I’d absolutely avoid anything with a CVT.
Meanwhile my 09 Nissan has original spark plugs because it’s well taken care of.
If it can go 75miles on red it's golden... But yeah let me make some of the strongest engines known to man for some of the worst drivers known to man
Big Altima Energy
my ex had a hand me down 2010 Altima. His dad bought it new, drove it a few years, gave it to my ex and he drove it for even more years, and last I saw the car it had nearly 200k miles on it and it was still very reliable.
190k on a 2010 maxima. Best car we have ever had.
The stupidest thing a person can do is rev a car with low oil/needing changed oil. I’ve never experienced it before but my dad’s Pacifica was low on oil and when I gave it gas it felt like the car stalled, scary experience.
True you don’t treat a vehicle right I promise that car starts thinking you know what I don’t feel like it today playa haha
I've had nissan for 20 years and never had an issue.
My 2015 2.5 got it with 26 miles has 180k now just brakes ,and oil changes, couple motor mounts too .still running smooth and strong 💪
Problem is they are dogging out a CvT and not doing maintenance on it. Suppose to fluid flush and filter change a CvT every 30k miles. This is why they blowing up 80k-100k miles.
Best car I ever had was a Nissan Cube. All I ever did was routine maintenance. Oil change, brakes, changed the rotors once. Ran like a dream until it was totaled by a tractor trailer. I'm still mad about it to this day. I'm 30 and that was my first car. I'm now on my second car, an actual piece of shit: a Chevrolet Cruze
I'm on my 5th Nissan V6, no issues.
Any car will last you a lifetime with proper maintenance. When I was in high school I treated my car like shit and it died on me at 130k I was naive and blamed the car brand and it's unreliability. Became a mechanic and now I have cars at 300k plus running as good as new. It's how good you take care of them and keep up with them
I’ve a 84 300zx 250k miles. Chilling.
Baa 40 year old car like what.
My 2002 xterra had 250k on it before I finally sold it. Loved that car.
Nissans have amazing engines. Easily 200k cars if you service them at proper intervals. Its the body style that keeps them unpopular(and the medias hard-on for the very deservedly awesome Toyota as well I think). I drive a 2021 Armada and I love it. But I get that the designs are quirky. Their sedans and the Murano are particularly hideous to me at least.
My 2013 altima had 220k+ miles on it before I got rear ended. My parents bought it brand new and my dad did maintenance on it and when I started driving it I was doing maintenance. I didn’t understand the “Nissans are unreliable” thing.
Drive next to one
Facts!
pretty sure it’s a maxima lol cuz i own one
I hit 289k in my 05 Altima when I had it . Then I moved to a 12 coupe and now I got a 21 Altima. Very reliable
Too bad he didn’t swerve while taking the photo. Morons on their phones deserve a concrete wall and casket.
Bro is living the dream.
Gotta love taking a picture with one hand while drinking with the other hitting 120
Hey now who’s to say it’s not a blunt in their hand
Not really. Their transmissions are notoriously unreliable and the company is in trouble. Not as bad as Mitsubishi but still...
same reason why they say kia is too. it’s bc cheap people take care of cars cheaply
and buy cheap cars with lots of plastic in the engine bay
Bros replying to comments as they weave through traffic
Sad because the Altima SV AWD is actually the last of its kind with a NA 2.O 4 cyl. The Altima is a an easy 300k car, but unfortunately people that get Altima’s, low credit / no credit buyers bc they can’t get another new car.. those people usually don’t care of their own life let alone their car.
Whatever the cause of their low reliability, they are still unreliable.
Had an altima try and kill me on a test drive, throttle tip in was somehow stuck so any touch of gas would launch the car, brakes reacted same way, dealer said nothing was wrong with it.
None of that has to do with the garbage CVT
Back when I was car shopping years ago, amongst the multiple brand dealers I spoke with the common denominator was “no one screwed up the CVT more than Nissan”
“I’ve taken care of it” when he goes to sell it. Orly
Nissan drivers are unreliable
Complete nutcases is also an acceptable term.
doing 120 with low gas wont hurt your car. Oil change lights are on milage timers and not necessarily reset when serviced, and TPMS very notoriously will come on in almost any car regardless of maintenance history.
Was waiting for this comment op is acting like he’s driving the car with no air in the tires with every light on the dash or something. The lights on aren’t that big of a deal 😂
Yeah. Glad I wrecked mine.
It's only 116, pfft
Wow 😮 going that fast and taking a picture 🤳 what a fucking idiot.
Toyota says at 60k for the cvt. Imagine that
None of those things have to deal with the issues with them. The transmission is the issue cvt trans with a fake shift program? Why? Subaru does the same thing it’s annoying
People still try to defend Nissan reliability? Lol
I'm a little confused what's the point of this picture?? Honestly curious
Also because they are less reliable than Honda and Toyota. Idk why anyone would get a Nissan over Honda/Toyota
Nissan capital will lend money to anyone. They lend to really under qualified people who can't afford a car almost any other way, then are happy to repo and do it a few more times for ever car they sell.
I mean no, My mother has a nissan, 30k miles on and it and she drives like an old lady, thing drives like shit, interior creaks, road noise is atrocious, extremely underpowered, transmission feels sluggish yet jerky at the same time, and has had multiple issues, serviced regularly, by the dealer
Looks to me like he's in a hurry to get gas.
I would like to see how high the rpms are while maintaining 120mph. those motors definitely aren't made for that type of abuse.
I think it’s funny. It’s like you assume that the people who have seen Nissans fail time after time compared to others treat their cars differently.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t take care of your cars, but just because you see people calling them unreliable while abusing them doesn’t mean your argument is valid. It’s like you assume that there is a disproportionate number of special that drive Nissans who don’t know anything about taking care of their cars, yet somehow in their experiencing other cars they call more reliable, they did take care of them.
That's not the case with everyone. My 2016 Altima's transmission is gone. It only has 63K and I've done my oil changes, etc... Nissan is the only car company , from what I've been told, that are making the CVT Transmissions. Many of them are dying WELL before they should. Nissan won't do anything about it and they won't recall the CVT's. I always put gas in my car at 1/4 tank. It's going to cost about $5300 for a rebuilt one. use to like Nissan, but NEVER again!!!
Had a 2001 Maxima with like 130K on the clock, and the only reason I got rid of it was because it would not pass SMOG. Good car.
As a professional auto technician I agree other than CVT transmissions and specific VQ engines
118 mph wow!
Man, is that what happened to my CVT Jatco trans? I should have never hit 120 in it.
What a load of shit this post is.
Nooo they are just trash you can do the same w a a Toyota and it will run fine
CVTs have a really bad name. The rest of the cars are reliable in my experience
Doing 120 and had the balls to pull out their phone, open their camera, ZOOM IN, and take a photo 💀💀💀
Nissan Altimas would be pretty reliable if they had automatic transmissions or manual transmissions. Instead, they throw a continuously variable transmission (CVT) in there, and they're suffering because of it.
They so badly want people to like their xtronic cvt, but many people, including me, will not buy the car because of the CVT.
The CVT is known for needing replacement. Often more than once. Sometimes 3 - 4 times.
Nissan started using the cvt in 2007. Before that the cars were pretty reliable.
If Nissan would sell an automatic altima, I can guarantee there would be an Altima sitting In my garage right now.
The car is junk i have a 2022 with 14 k miles the engine module went i will be trading it asap nothing but problems with it as well over priced junk
He’s actually only going like 25. The speedometer is just another item on the broken list.
Gas is the only main issue. I put a reminder on my car and sometimes forget to reset it. Tire pressure could be anything from low tire pressure to sensor going bad or out like mine
My Nissan Pathfinder Armada runs good now after unhooking temp gauge ! Before that it would stall randomly, even just letting engine idle, can't trust it, like my old 98 f-150! THE BIGGEST THING I HAVE AGAINST 'NISSAN', IS THEIR "CUSTOMER ~ SUPPORT", ( IT'S 'SHITTY' AND SO ARE THEY! ) ( I ) HAVE NEVER GOTTEN ANY HELP FROM NISSAN'S SITE, ONLY "SALESMANSHIP", ALWAYS WANTING YOU TO BUY PARTS YOU ACTUALLY DON'T NEED, JUST WORKING PEOPLE ON THE INTERNET FOR MONEY! I HAD 4-CODES ON MINE! GOT NO HELP FROM NISSAN, GOT ALL MY REAL HELP FROM GOOGLE AND YOU TUBE VIDEOS, WATCH THAT 'SCOTTY' ASSHOE, HE DOESN'T KNOW W.T.F. HE'S TALKING ABOUT, COMPLETELY 'FULLOFSHIT' BUT YOU CAN GET REAL ANSWERS THERE!
2011 Altima 3.5 6spd 270,000km still going strong. Change fluids Alternator Ac compressor/condenser Brakes CV Boot
Saw an Altima earlier... and then I didn't because of the giant cloud of white smoke it left behind
My 2009 versa base 5 speed is still chugging along at 218,000 and she still runs like new, just gotta keep up on that maintenence
Girl has sentra she treats like crapalways goes over oil changes by couple thousand miles is at 200k only 1 trans replacement
Mans murdering a ford pinto so what
Nissans are fine. This thing? Due to die soon. Real recognize real
my 2006 nissan sentra has 240k miles and is still running happily, but that’s bc she doesn’t have a cvt. LOL. she’s been quite reliable!!
I tell people I hate to buy a Nissan/Infiniti or a Kia/Hyundai
Nah you can still take care of them hoes and they will still break I had a 2014 ended up putting more in the car than it’s worth and the amount I bought it for same with infinity u can take care of them all u want bug eventually it will break down regardless .those cars aren’t built to last
My 'collision avoidance disabled' light comes on for practically no reason at all some times on my 2021 Sentra. I could simply be driving along with no bad weather on a sunny day and it comes on. I've even thought perhaps the sensor on the front was dirty but even after a good car wash, it will still come on. I've had the dealership look at it and even they have no clue why it comes on. Otherwise, it has no other affects on the car whatsoever.
Perhaps stuff like this is why some people say Nissans are unreliable, too.
Nissan has become a red flag car brand. Lets be honest.
Let the trash take itself out
Reh-no!
This sub is fucking hilarious it's just pure nissan owner cope.
Altimas are poverty cars ppl who drive them dont know how cars work
My bf is a mechanic and says Nissan altimas are trash. You’ll need a new trans after 100k miles.
They say Nissan's unreliable because every automatic Nissan they made past 2002 used a CVT transmission, which were glass and compared anything else that came out of Japan, otherwise Nissan WAS on par with Honda/Toyota before then. Great motors, shit transmissions.
pretty sure it’s a maxima lol cuz i own one
pretty sure it’s a maxima lol cuz i own one
💯😂
I got a 2008 Altima coupe only like 120k miles on it. What’s some tips to keep it going strong long as possible?
Well maintianed $83k qx80 here, can confrim- they are in fact built like shit.
Or cuz you hit 100k and everything literally starts failing one after the other after the other
So you honestly think Toyota drivers are better at maintaining their cars? And yet they never say it was unreliable
Had an 89 maxima 5spd, did nothing but oil and went over 300k miles before being crashed.
When I stop replacing Nissans CVTs, I'll start calling them "reliable"
My 1990 Honda with oil maintenance light, low gas, no tire pressure sensor at all and almost 500k miles: ahem
Not an Altima, but I had a family owned 06 pathfinder with over 280K miles before full transmission failure, visited the shop for preventative maintenance when needed and went through at least two transmission drains before I traded it in for its worth in scrap.
Just take care of your car, lmao.
Change the oil or loss ir
Bought a brand new Altima because we wanted a “reliable family car” for the wife. Kept up with every service needed for her, to include a transmission fluid service at just over 35k, and we drove it very conservatively. 48k miles… transmission was shot and had to be replaced. Nissan sucks.
I had 08 Altima with 200k same engine and trans. Ran a rough idle occasionally. Got $3k trade for it on a Lincoln town car. Second town car I’ve owned nothing compares to these cars
And crap CVTs
Had an Altima for 7 years never really had any real problems. Only thing that went was my power steering at 35k miles
Had an Altima for 7 years never really had any real problems. Only thing that went was my power steering at 35k miles
This is just normal r/NissanDrivers activities
The thing is, Nissans cars can’t take as much of a beating that Toyota/Honda can, that’s why people say they’re unreliable. They are reliable IF you take care of them, don’t drive them like shit all the time, and do your maintenance. I personally like to do the oil changes, brake checks, transmission fluid changes, all those things earlier than the manufacture recommended. You can do the manufacture recommended miles but it’ll last longer if you do it a bit earlier.
I move cars around a CarMax (US retailer) reconditioning hub for a living. Maintenance = longevity, regardless of make; but Toyotas are what they say they are. Autistic alliteration at the end there wheeee.
Get an '05 Micra. The only maintenance she'll need is oil every couple of months.
That’s what I said on another thread yesterday. They drive their cars like crap and ignore every possible maintenance and wonder why their cars don’t last 🤷🏾♂️😂
