Where do you all go to just be *around people* on your off days?

At least one coworker sticks around to talk at (yes AT, not with) coworkers for an hour or more after his shift ends. I assume it’s because he’s been holding in words all night and having inner monologues that need to be voiced to someone. Anyone.

Also if you ever go to 7-11 super early you can tell who is getting coffee to start their day and who is getting snacks post nightshift because they’re extra chatty with cashiers for no real reason. Everyone else is pretty quiet because it’s 6:30am and they’re not ready for interaction yet.

Also nightshift workers are there buying beer and hotdogs instead of coffee and donuts.

I don't live in a big city. My neighborhood has a park right next to it so about 4-5pm I go walk at the park and everyone is there with their kids or having a BBQ or playing soccer, volleyball, baseball, tennis or hockey. It feels nice being around people without having to actually talk to them. Makes me feel apart of something but no pressure cause I'm just walking

Is there a gym in your hamlet? I find that the 3-5 hours a week I spend at the gym is more than enough time wasted on people.

If people is your thing, you might want to spend your weekends on a daywalker schedule so you can go to some events, make friends, be active when all the other social butterflies are awake. I can't imagine many events worth your time (unless you want to camp out in a nightclub?) that are on a night shift schedule.

I generally don't want to be around people except for a few friends, some family, and my wife. Im surprised to hear that a night shifter seeks this out.

I do miss connection sometimes but post pandemic in particular and this past decade in general I've found people in public to be increasingly more insufferable. Soghts, sounds, smells. I thought it was part of my aging, but I think it's a mix of that and people being increasingly more shitty.

On rate occasions I have good wholesale expenses doing basic things like food shopping. Getting in nature.

Lol I actually go to the library. Don't really talk to anyone but it's the fact that their there lol. Weird I know

Concerts

I'll be honest I primarily hit up bars. You can often find people to talk to. Alternatively clubs provide a relatively active social environment. It's good to already have friends to go out to those with though.

I live in a big enough city that I have a theater that does midnight showings of "classic" movies. Theyre doing Event Horizon this week.

Also, I like breakfast as dinner, so I get a big breakfast at my favorite dinner on the way home sometimes.

i’m a hobbyist so a good ppl thing for me to do is go to a craft store or cafe with my project. it’s not everyone’s thing, but going to your favorite restaurant by yourself and sitting down for a meal can help. you’re alone yet amongst company

Used to be the bar then I remembered I’m an alcoholic.

You just described one of the reasons I love night shift: everyone's asleep. But when I am craving to be around other people, a trip to the casino usually does the trick. I don't even usually gamble but it's always pretty fun with plenty of people to talk to. Plus they have free soft drinks and coffee, great bars, buffets, etc... even escorts and drugs are usually around there to seek out if you're really feeling wild.

I.... Can't say that this is a feeling I find terribly relatable. Usually going to the grocery store enough "peopling" for me. 

I would recommend sleeping from 2 pm to 9pm then work off at 7 am and that leaves plenty of morning till 1240 to go see neighbors or walk a dog or hang out with a local friend. I end up rotating to day schedule on my days off. So when I’m off at 7 am Sunday I’m not sleeping until 5 pm to get more daylight. I wake up at 2 or 3 am so I am not going crazy alone ALL night long. Walk a dog.

I like going to farmers markets! Get some fresher food and meet new people.

I go to the local gaming Cafe with a project or a book and just chill around all the other nerds. Sometimes i wear headphones and listen to something but often i just enjoy being around people doing stuff.

I listen to them explain games to each other, sometimes i get interested in what they are up to. I really just like seeing people being excited and joyful about stuff that means something to them.

Coffee shops, library, live band shows/concerts, sports events, gym/swimming pool, park; walk a greenbelt if your area has one; volunteer with an organization or event; go to a lake, river, or pond that people like to recreate on

As another redditor said, you don't work nights if you want to keep having a social life. Can it be done, of course. I see people TRY and do that all the time and then come in and complain how tired they are or how much sleep they didn't get which effects their attitude and job performance. I've been working nights for 8 years and see folks try to have a normal life from college kids to people my age and they find out right quick how difficult it is to balance that out.

the shift switch doesnt seem to make much of a difference to me. i dont know if its because of the changes from covid (layoffs, people working from home)-but there doesnt seem to be "off hours" anymore. i can go to the store or wherever like in the middle of the day on a tuesday, and theres just as many people there.

Days off with my GF. That’s about as much people-ing as I need.

I go no where to just be around people.

It’s not just night shift people. Everyone across the country is suffering from this problem. I wonder if you could organize some kind of social group for the town you live in. And try to have some kind of event each week during the day. I bet people would be interested in that. This is the only solution I can see.

What everyone is looking for is a pre-arranged environment they can just fit into. But nobody is willing to be the leader and be the one who creates that context.

I was in fast food for a long long long long long time but we weren’t 24 hrs thank god. I like nights because I don’t have to deal people near as much. I was in upper management so I dealt with lots of levels of people. There were customers, team members, managers and then corporate people. Now I’m one of 8 people on my team in a division of 35 total. We service one client and at my current pay grade I never see them. Corporate is in Japan, as long as we make the bottom line they never come around. The only people i worry about are my family.

Its starting summertime. Im gonna hit up the Drive-in 2/3 times a month. I have the kid to adventure with on days off when school gets out next month.

And really I still do the Pre-nightshift stuff I used to. Its amazing how much better being in a concert band is in your mental "Morning" than after 8-9 hrs of work bullshit

I would go to the gun club when I worked nights. Usually play euchre and shoot clay pigeons with all the retired guys

Why would I want to be around people on my off days?

People? I literally go home after work, eat breakfast and read for like two hours before I go to sleep . I get home about 7:15 and go to sleep around 11.

I gave up. Only my wife exists outside of work

I'm in a big museum town. It can be fun to go see the exhibits. There are also millions of restaurants here.

Meh I bought property with a garage.

Gay bar and the jazz bar. Sometimes a college bar that has townie karaoke.
