Hey all, if this is the wrong subreddit, my apologies. I’ll try to make this short and sweet. A week ago I bought a 2021 Kawasaki Ninja 400 as my first bike, and been riding it all week learning on it. I love everything about the bike except the darn exhaust. The previous owner had an extremely stupid idea to just straight pipe it/cut the exhaust off. It’s absurdly loud, and I really don’t like it. Neighbors are already complaining about it and its not fair, because I just want to practice riding and I’m tired of getting ridiculed by my neighbors and friends about how loud this is. So im trying to get it back to stock, stock exhaust and muffler so I can ride without getting angry looks and I want to be able to ride it at night. I know nothing about motorcycle exhausts/mufflers. Is there a website or recommendation from anyone to get it back to stock? If anyone knows where I can get a stock exhaust and muffler please let me know. Thanks riders.
Search the part number of the stock exhaust on ebay. There are probably a lot of them for sale from people who took them off. In the future I'd absolutely never buy a bike where the owner just hacked the exhaust off. People who do stuff like this, where it's just flat out stupid, are more inclined to treat the rest of the bike badly, or with the same stupidity.
I agree, only reason I did is i know the person personally who sold it to me, they treated it good besides just hacking the exhaust off, which i keep telling him is the stupidest thing in the world to do.
Does this person have the stock exhaust or was it thrown away?
I would try the r/ninja400 subreddit; you might find someone with a stock exhaust or try FB marketplace.
I'd consider just using it as an excuse to get a new exhaust system (I assume OEM will be close to as costly, but haven't looked at it). There are videos on YouTube on how to swap out an exhaust system. If you're handy with some hand tools, it's fairly straight forward. Hell, if you're in the DMV, I can help you with putting on a new one lol. Good luck!
Edit: I see you're in Colorado so can't help, but it is pretty straight forward. If you feel comfortable doing an oil change, I feel like you'll feel comfortable (definitely watch the videos first to make sure you are).
No rear number plate or signal lights?
Dude, learn and check your vehicle before buying it. Go learn about bikes, YouTube and forums are a great place to learn from.
And I'm guessing you got no bike licence?
Try posting this over in the ninja subreddit, I’m sure some one there has to have one laying around somewhere! If not, PartZilla is your best friend!
I put a ShortyGP on my Rebel 300 for all of two days before I went back to my stock exhaust haha. My neighbors somehow didn’t complain tho thankfully 😅
Thanks! Guess i should have thought about the ninja subreddit. But otherwise thank you for the help, I’ll look around PartZilla.
The other comments on here sound like they're sending you on the right track on where to find a decently priced muffler that's not stupid loud. FWIW in my experience, changing out the muffler on a motorcycle is pretty darn easy with only basic tools, provided your previous owner didnt cut any of the catalytic converter off.
My advice would be to determine exactly how much of the exhaust system was cut off and then see if you can purchase a gently used stock or quality brand aftermarket slip on muffler that has not had the baffle, aka "dB killer", removed. I basically did the same thing with my current bike since the PO had a dummi loud muffler on that was too loud for the touring I wanted to do on it.
Feel free to DM me any pics of your bike or questions you have about the process. :)
Thank you! If you want, I can DM you some pictures of what im dealing with. Very new to all this so the help would be awesome. Its just cut off on the bottom area. I have heard it easy but im sort of thinking this is a job with welding involved unfortunately
Sure, go for it! I would be really surprised if something needed to be welded - worst case, the headers were cut, but even then you can get an entire new system to bolt on to your cylinder heads and frame.
I cannot DM you for some reason unfortunately. Shoot me a message if you please!
If you're not checked for emissions you could just buy the full kit from someone like Leovince or mivv, failing that eBay is usually good for exhaust systems, people put aftermarket on all the time and sell stock
Just buy an OEM on EBay.

Keep the shiny side up.
I feel the exhaust bit but to a lesser extent. I got my N400 from my brother and he put a Leo Vince slip-on on there. I ride out of the neighborhood at 20mph in 4th gear to keep the noise down
Id recommend a good quality slip on exhaust over the stock exhaust. Something with a nice tone but not too loud. You may have more success in the r/ninja400 subreddit.
I might still have my stock exhaust, but I may have thrown the heat shield out
I got a kemimoto slip on on Amazon that sounds nice. Between eighty and a hundo dollars on amazon
I highly recommend you get a manufacturer’s factory service repair maintenance shop manual for your motorcycle. I mean one written by the manufacturer and not one of these third party manuals. They will include all sorts of procedures and even parts numbers.
That's a cool color. Maybe we could meet up and I can ride your bike. I would have a better idea of how cool it is if I could ride it myself. I mean a better idea of how to fix it.
