Try Bent Creek and also throughout the Avery Creek side of 276.

Calptopo.com has a neat layer called mvum that highlights all the forest services roads. That is an easy visual way to find nearby forest roads.

Yea, Bent Creek would be great. There's also a service road that goes up to Bearwallow Mountain, which is a bald on top and would be doggy paradise.

Barnardsville. Drive up State Highway 197 until it turns to gravel. Pull off at any of the gated turnouts and there are networks of old FS roads for miles.

Bearwallow mountain trail. Just east of Asheville

That trail from the Black Balsam Knob Parking lot to Tennet Mtn was a old railroad bed. It's way way up there

North Mills River: You could do Wash Creek which allows cars or better yet park at Trace Ridge in North Mills and do the Never Ending Road. No traffic except bikes. Alternatively from Trace Ridge go down to Henderson Reservoir (about 5 miles out and back) where there are no cars.

Lots of wide trails/fire roads in Dupont that are car free, but that's further from Asheville.

Little bit of a haul but Rich Fire Tower close to Hot Springs is a great hike but quite a drive from Asheville.

South Toe Road is gated off past Black Mountain Campground. It’s a beautiful walk.
