In Uncharted (2022) Nathan Drake and Chloe Frazer (Tom Holland and Sophia Ali) wash up on a beach and meet a stranger who says something similar happened to him once. That actor is Nolan North, the original voice actor for Nathan Drake in the Uncharted video games.
🥚 Easter EggSo it wasn’t uncharted? It was precharted?
Seeing how they are always following in the footsteps of others, it’s more like re-chartered?
Movie was definitely re-charted.
It's not uncharted, you lost the chart.
She's built like a steakhouse, but she handles like a bistro
You win again, gravity!
Take my upvote for reminding me of this hilarious episode.
The spirit is willing, but the flesh is spongy and bruised!
Thanks for reminding me of this, I think I’ll go watch it now
I never thought I'd die like this but I always really hoped
You were charted when you had the chart. Now you are un-charted.
We no can dunk. But good fundamentals.
fembot wants to know why there are MEN ON HER PLANET
Just broke into this super secret impossible to decipher from a map ancient tomb and ruins… no one has set foot here in centuries… hey a back entrance where all the bad guys are guarding.
When the young Nathan Drake opens a case in the dormitory there’s a Naughty Dog sticker inside, the developer of the games.
Ikr, I noticed that as well 😂
I didn’t play the games and when I saw that scene I was like “I guess that’s a relevant real person for the game”
That's how the group I went with felt lol.
You may not know who the actor is but you can just feel the cameo when we stop on a random person with a speaking line that has no relevance to the plot.
Felt the same in Django Unchained when that Italian Mandingo owner talked to Django. At the time, didn’t know who the actor was, but that scene felt as if that guy had some importance to westerns in the past. Made me look him up and found out he played Django as the title character.
I got the same feeling at the end of Pursuit of Happyness. Why did Will Smith randomly look back at some older gentleman who passed by? Turns out it was the real Chris Gardner
It's like in The Rundown when The Rock is walking into a club and a random guy walking out looks at him and says, "have fun." It turns out that that random guy was Arnold Schwarzenegger.
That's why I like Don Haskins cameo in Glory Road. He was a gas station attendant and it wasn't too obvious.
???
The original Django film from 1966 was about a white ex-union soldier turned-drifer named Django who takes vengeance on the KKK. It's a spaghetti western inspired by the film Yojimbo. The guy who plays Django in the 1966 western is the guy who played the role of the Italian mandingo trader in Django Unchained.
Especially when that line is: "Oh, these events you are encountering? They happened to ME once too. What a surprise! Anyway, I'll see you guys never again and this interaction was meaningless"
That may as well have been his line lol
If they make more, maybe they’ll be better quality. And maybe Nolan North will show up as a recurring joke
Sort of like how Clive Cussler always appears in his Dirk Pit novels.
Like that one guy who was on vacation in three different Bond movies that just so happened to be where Bond is doing stuff
I didn't know Nolan North played Nathan!
Pick any male protagonist from 2000-2010 and it seems there's a 50% that Nolan North did it.
To the point that the joke player voice in saints row 4 was just "Nolan North"
Troy Baker
Nor the default female voice.
Never played it but given her popularity Laura Bailey?
Or Jennifer Hale, it's as 50/50 as the choice between Nolan North and Troy Baker
Dingding. Not complaining though, pove her.
The other 50% is Troy baker. Not to shit on them, they're great voice actors. Just in everything lol.
Troy Baker on getting into video game voice acting: "wait for me and Nolan North to die."
Yuri Lowenthal has been in like everything for like 25 years.
Has Travis been in more than Mercer?
Most of the CR cast are pretty prolific tbh.
My biggest disappointment in the long list of disappointments that was Halo 5 was the fact they cast Travis Willingham as my favorite character from the novels
... And then gave him like 10 lines total
Hell, he'd been my fan casting for the role for over a decade at that point
Also, see Steve Blum.
Coolest voice of all time. I'd listen to that man read the phonebook
Which makes the joke even funnier when Troy Baker voices Nathan's brother.
Not to shit on Troy Baker but I just prefer Nolan North. Nolan disguises his voice more in video games where Troy just uses his regular voice except for Joker and Joel.
Baker plays Pagan Min pretty well.
He Plays Pagan? Damn they really are everywhere lol.
And Delson in Infamous, Booker in bioshock, Tallion in middle earth, Sam in uncharted, like 6 different characters in batman, Higgs in death stranding and countless others
where Troy just uses his regular voice
You mean Troy is just ASKED to do his regular voice.
Voice talent is being directed to do something. They're not just following their hearts.
But his performance as Joel is outstanding, so I’ll always love him for that.
I never appreciated how good Nolan was until I learned he played David in The Last of Us.
He’s got range, but everyone just wants his Drake voice.
Or Steve blum
Theres games where Steve blum stalks to Steve blum while Steve blum occasionally interjects.
Those 3 characters are talking about a fourth, voiced by Steve Blum.
And in the case of Uncharted 4, both.
And last of us. Nolan north played David
Crash Bandicoot
Troy and Abed in the morning?
There was a time when it felt like Nolan played every game protagonist. Giant Bomb used to poke fun at that with an award for best Nolan North usage called "The Northies".
You can even hear him regularly as background characters in other games too. One example that comes to mind is in an obscure game most people probably don't remember: World in Conflict, he plays a random soldier asking for a cigarette when an infantry unit is standing idle.
He is every other goon in the Batman Arkham games too.
"It's da BAT!"
Also Penguin, at least in Arkham Knight
Wait what. Nolan was Penguin too? Shit he was Penguin in City and Origins too...
Wish Nathan Fillion also made a cameo
I wish Nathan made the film (nothing against Tom).
that Nathan Fillion short movie should have been greenlit into a movie.
Like Deadpool. Well I guess the difference is Ryan Reynolds was adamant on it getting made.
Same. He would be so good
Nathan Fillion and Bruce Campbell were the destined pairing
So I'm honestly wondering about this. What made you watch the movie if you had no connection to the games? Also, what did you think of it?
As someone who has never played the games:
It was on when I wanted to go to the cinema.
it was fine. Entertaining action movie, nothing particularly special.
I did play the games and this is what I thought too.
Did not feel like uncharted, but it was a pretty ok treasure hunt movie.
Kinda like when thr Prince of Persia movie came out like 10 years ago. It didn't feel like PoP at all, but it was a pretty alright live action Aladdin
Oh yes, when the Prince of Persia came out and they cast notable Persian actor JAKE GYLLENHAL
As someone who played the game, I think the game was amazing because it feels like you're in a movie. That made it special.
I just don't think it works if it was actually a movie.
It's a generic action movie. There's a huge market for that. There's going to be a big portion of viewers who don't even know that it's a video game adaptation (nothing wrong with that, just to clarify). Tom Holland will probably be the face of generic action in a few years, but he's not in everything like some people believe. Most people haven't seen him in anything other than the Marvel movies.
Like someone else said I had time to kill so I went to the cinema. There was other movies but I was totally up for an action movie and it looked like one. Uncharted vaguely rang a bell, only when I was in my seat I remembered it was a videogame. Never played it or heard about the story so I was afraid it would be a problem but nope, and the movie was really nice.
I really like the dialogues, they made me laugh a lot. Brothers backstory was touching (the end-credit scene made me want to see an Uncharted 2). I liked the hero's "mentor", the type of guy he can't trust but he has to work with him and in the end he saves him (for now...). Only complain is it was too farfetched sometimes (like the girl stole the key in the guy's bag while always staying at +2 meters from him, really ? Also the fell from a car from a plane of course)
Also since it seems you went to see it because you had connection to the games, what did you think of it ? Is it faithful to the games ? Were you disappointed by some things ?
If you expect the movie to be watched only by people who have a connection to the game, then expect it to flop. lol
I didn’t recognize him right away, but when I heard his voice I immediately knew.
I thought my ghost was talking to me
Eyes up, Guardian
Twinkle twinkle, assholes.
It'll always be Dinklebot in my heart
I don't know if I miss dinkelbot or if it's just nostalgia for the discovering destiny the 1st time
I can pick him out in any videogame, his voice is just so iconic
I loved the games but I’m afraid to watch this movie lol
Same
I enjoyed all games 1-4 but am absolutely terrified to watch the movie, with how bad of a track record video game movies have
its actually not that bad, it's definitely not super accurate to the games but the characters are good, and the story is interesting
Yh it’s just a generic fun action flick.
Kind of like prince of Persia then?
Man rember the super cel shaded prince of Persia they made and then they stopped making them because Assassin's Creed became super popular and they just made them instead even though it was sort of a spiritual successor but not.
I dunno, the whole later half where Prince of Persia turns into that super dark commentary on the Vietnam War and then takes an abrupt twist into lovecraftian torture-horror really weirded me out.
Excuse me what
Man it’s been a hot min since I saw prince of Persia I don’t remember ANY of that plot
It's subtle, I didn't even notice it until my second viewing
It was like National Treasure, but not as fun. Still enjoyable.
If it is fun and there is action in it then that's not a bad thing
Yeah, I might give it a view
Another commentor did say it's good if it's not tide to the game, and some other shit I forgot
I'm surprised it's out already. I only played uncharted 4 so I'm not exactly married to the series but I may give it a chance and see what I think of the movie. Uncharted 4 was a superb game tbf.
Uncharted 4 was def amazing
But, playing 1-3 will give you a good idea if a story and some context that wasn't given in 4
What's the best way to play 1-4? consoles are not super easy get right now (PS5 and Xbox series X)
PS Plus had released 1-3 about 2ish Years back and released 4 the next year. They're also all available on PS4
My best suggestion would be to wait for a sale on the 1-3 games (which the PS Store called the Nathan Drake Collection) and 4 can now be bought by itself or together with 4 and Lost Legacy
Uncharted 4 came out 6 years ago. I just made myself sad.
Well or course not but you kinda glossed over the generic bit
What bothers me is Tom Holland. I've got nothing against him as an actor but I hate it when studios try to coast on the popularity of an actor from one franchise (particularly Marvel) and then for the next couple of years they are in EVERYTHING.
So... Didn't need to use the IP aside from easy marketing?
Pretty much. Though Uncharted itself is generic enough and borrows so much from different film franchises that any adaptation of it is going to feel the same
Low standards
Having played all 5 parts I can say that it's a decent flick and definitely worth a watch
Glad to see someone's not calling me an idiot for wanting to watch the movies
Literally, two dudes are telling me the movie is trash, and one of them thinks I've already watched the movie
In my opinion, it captures the “spirit” of Uncharted.
It’s entirely it’s own story, separate from the games, but has many of the same elements and sequences that feel like they’d occur (or actually do) in the game.
Don’t go in expecting a like-for-like copy of the game. It’s just a fun action flick that incorporates the elements from Uncharted to give us an independent version of the story in a sort of prequel detailing Nate’s early years as an adventurer.
As long as you recognize that, and enjoy the bits of fan service, you’ll have a fun time with it. Good popcorn movie for sure.
how bad of a track record video game movies have
The only one I can think of that I disliked was Prince of Persia
The Super Mario brothers movie from the 90s is a masterpiece!
Hot take but Prince of Persia was very fun if you forget everything about prince of persia and that it’s no where culturally/historically accurate in terms of how persia was.
We got beautiful princess, rival brother redemption. Over the top evil villain that betrays the main character, ostrich racing, the nbaka, masters of the throwing knife knife, and time travel.
Interesting to find out that a lot of people thought Prince of Persia was a bad adaptation. I usually use that as an example of a good video game adaptation.
Maybe people are thinking the original prince of persia when I am thinking of the ubisoft 3rd person game as the source material for the movie.
It was alright, the casting decisions really sucked though, if it didn't have the uncharted name and characters on it, it would be a really good self contained adventure movie.
Yea, like honestly, why the hell is Wahlberg playing Sully?
Gimme Bruce Campbell as sully and I’d watch it any day
God damn now I want that movie.
Plus Nathan Fillion 20 years younger.
This Uncharted Fan Film starring Nathan Fillion is the closest you'll get.
Yeah that was pretty fun. But also pretty clear Nathan is a little too old for this.
Especially now, a few years after that was made.
He's aging rapidly tbh, in The Rookie, he looks at least 15 years older than he does in this imho.
Could be they make him up to look that much older as he's supposed to be a 50 something man with adult kids starting a new career path.
Oh man Bruce Campbell as sully would have been perfect.
You just gave me a raging boner
Movie was in development hell for so long that he was too old to play Drake.
I think they were contractually obligated to offer him a part. Like how with Disney they’re legally required to tell James Woods “hey we plan to use Hades for something do you want to voice him?” before they’re allowed to go anywhere else for casting
Wahlberg playing Sully made more sense to me than Holland as Nathan Drake.
That dude is in his middle 20s. He's not really all that young for what they did here. But he really does look it. And I think hes gonna stay that way.
Wahlberg on the other hand is the right age range and is just Wahlberg.
To paraphrase John Mulaney, he looks like a really tired teenager
Seriously it's like a teenage boy playing Indiana Jones.
I knew the Cult of Tom Holland was getting out of hand, but casting him in this role is just amazing in its sheer insanity.
He doesn't fit the character AT ALL. Not in his looks, not in his delivery, not in his general aspect. Drake is supposed to be a Han Solo type. A dashing rogue. A man with a bit of seasoning, but still in his physical prime. Not a pretty boy, but not a muscle-head. In other words, A HAN SOLO TYPE.
That's not Tom Holland. Apart from anything else, he's just too young and baby-faced. He's a Luke Skywalker type, not a Han Solo type.
I happen to think Mr. Holland is overrated, in general, but it's just bananas insane to cast him as Nathan Drake. It's a baffling error. He looks like a random teenager doing a weirdly low-effort Drake cosplay.
Naughty dog designed Drake with Johnny Knoxville as inspiration. Now old man Knoxville is in no way shape or form a good idea to have in any casting. But Tom Holland is like the opposite end of the spectrum.
At the 2008 Game Developers Conference, lead game designer Richard Lemarchand revealed that Nate's character was based in part on Johnny Knoxville.
Lemarchand went on to say that they wanted to capture Knoxville's "coolness and goodness" in the character.Amy Hennig later clarified that Knoxville was just one of the people that influenced Nate's design, with others including actors like Cary Grant.
I deffinitly think Fillion played a part also. There’s early sketches of him looking more Knoxville, found here https://www.pinterest.com.au/pin/435864070159498649/
Also some with him having a more Clint Eastwood look
You had to say Han Solo when he's literally Indiana Jones.
A mix between Han solo & Indiana Jones. The definitive Harrison Ford.
Haven’t seen the film - but, Holland does seem to maybe fit the young Drake character as seen in the Uncharted 3 and 4 flashback sequences, when he first meets Sully and breaks out of the orphanage with Sam. Weirdly Holland seems a bit too old for that even though I totally buy him as a teenager in Spider-Man, just a personal thing I suppose.
Haven’t seen the film - but, Holland does seem to maybe fit the young Drake character as seen in the Uncharted 3 and 4 flashback sequences, when he first meets Sully
That is literally what this film’s story is about lol
You really have Star Wars on the mind hey?
If you read the above description of Nolan North's cameo and though "wow that sounded awkward and forced", trust me... its much much worse.
The film is an okay adventure film. Its not a good Uncharted film.
Hi-def posts on /r/moviedetails is how I find out a movie is on pirate sites
Oh I was going to guess it meant the studio was guerrilla marketing it
Is this movie any good?
Yes and no. Yes, as a stand alone action movie that has no ties to other media. Its a decent action movie. At least in my opinion. But as a movie based off of already established media, then no. Characters aren't the same as they are in the game, their histories are changed etc.
I actually thought it represented the gameplay and style of the games really well. It's just badly cast with Wahlberg and having a younger Nate serves no purpose other than being able to have Tom make a bunch of them.
I thought the movie was decent, captured the charm of the games especially with the ending sequence with the ships. I agree that wahlberg was a bad cast tho. They should have gone with like, a Tom hanks type or maybe even just Nathan Fillion since he couldn’t fill the Nathan drake role.
I’ve played the entire series and the only person who could’ve only nailed Sully would’ve been Bruce Campbell
If you're not a fan of the games. You'd enjoy it.
If you're fan of the game but treat is just an adventure movie. You'd enjoy it.
If you're fan of the game but expecting it to be at par with the games. You'll have a bad time.
I thought you were giving me a clue so I could guess the movie. Lol.
I mean, you can still take it as a pretty good clue.
I think the new sonic movies are pretty good even if they aren't faithful to the games
The first Resident Evil and Silent Hill were pretty good transition from game to screen.
Clue is definitely the best though. Casting was phenomenal.
I enjoyed Werewolves Within and thats technically based on a game.
I also kind of have a weird love for that terrible Doom Movie with the Rock. Its not good but I have a strange fondness for it.
I’m a big fan of the games.
Don’t go in expecting a like-for-like remake of the games. I feel like the same could be said for movies based on comic books or something.
It captures the spirit of the games, which I considered to the be the important part.
Except when it happened to Nolan it was cooler.
Nolan North is the best.
Edit: Thanks for the gold :) I was just stating the obvious!
He’s my second favorite voice actor only behind kevin conroy
Conroy is amazing and one of my favorites. But Nolan has so much range. From Drake to The Penguin in the Arkham series (speaking of Conroy.)
He's a goddamn national treasure.
"YEAH, BABY! THAT'S HOW NOLAN ROLLS!!"
Probably Sam had an extra gold from Avery so he gave it to you.
Troy Baker is the (second) best!
No shit, when I met him at a con he gave me a free autograph. Doesn't sound impressive until you learn how he did it.
It was Northern Ireland/Belfast Comic Con -- in fact, the last one before the convention was shut down permanently (the convention organizers decided to focus more on the events in England >:( ). I knew that Troy was going to be there so decided to bring my PS4 copies of Shadow of Morder and Far Cry 4 to ask him to sign one of them - I wanted to get a few signatures, but the convention charged £20 a pop.
I go up there and ask him to choose one to sign and he went with Shadow of Mordor. We got to talking about playing the game as the attendant/minder took the money to put it in the lockbox...
At which point, Baker signalled me to be quiet, took the other game and signed that as well.
...Come to think about it, since he did that odd shushing gesture and given the time period, I am now not unconvinced that he may have been teasing his role in Death Stranding as well.
Hot Sauce is the best
His portrayal of deadpool in Marvel vs Capcom 3 is my favorite thing ever
No joke he is in the conversation for the best voice actor in gaming history. He and Troy Baker are two names where if I see them in a game, then I have a feeling the game is gonna be great and I should check it out. They make any character they play so authentic and unique, and it’s never the same voice twice
WOW WHAT A SUBTLE HINT THEY DROPPED
Like a brick in the face. Bet they were dead proud of themselves hiding that nudge nudge wink
Pretty sure they weren't trying to be subtle. It was just fanservice
Tbf that's how the jokes are in the games too
I could give Tom a pass but Mark, there is no chance in hell that he's Sully. Also what is wrong with following the original stories to the games? I feel like directors and writers are too afraid to follow the blueprint. A video game is 60 bucks, a movie ticket is 11. Put some respect on that shit.
I haven’t seen the movie but I’m a huge fan of the games. In my opinion, the games aren’t a great plot to make a movie out of. The appeal of the 3 ps3 games, as well as the ps Vita game, is that it’s a dumb and charming action movie in video game form. All of the games other than the 4th one basically have the same plot, of Drake hunting legendary treasure while making progress neck and neck with a generic bad guy. Even the 4th one is basically the same plot, just with a bit more character building and depth woven throughout. The games are great as games, you don’t need an incredibly engaging plot to drive you going through interesting environments while solving puzzles and experiencing amazing action set pieces. The games are great because you’re experiencing falling out of a cargo plane or escaping a crumbling lost city, but none of those things necessarily make for a great action movie. Especially a movie that was clearly just thrown together by focus groups who would be more likely to buy tickets if a moustache-less Mark Wahlberg played Sully. Basically imo a generic action movie can make for a great video game if it’s got fluid gameplay and exciting moments throughout, but if I’m not holding a controller then it’s just a generic action movie.
I think the issue Hollywood has when adapting video games is that video game stories are paced very differently to movie storylines. So they pull in movie screenwriters to make it work on the big screen, but they want to put their own stamp on it and end up changing more than necessary.
I can give Tom a pass as an actor but not the people that cast him.
He just isn't Nathan Drake. That's kind of how video game movies go though.
Loved that I was able to whisper this to my gf in the theatre like every other nerd
Bro I did the exact same haha
Used to work with the dude in Boston. Wahoowa
The original Nathan Drake? I think you mean the true Nathan Drake
So many people in my theater asked, “who was that?”
About 50. Then I stood up and explained to everyone who he was. Everyone clapped.
Even if, as some people say, it's a fun, mindless action movie, I have a hard time watching it since they had to slap "Uncharted" on it. It's like World War Z. It might be a good zombie flick, but it's a terrible insult to the books. Using the name of something to get it publicity and then completely disregarding the source material makes it kind of unwatchable for me
I still can't get over that awful Pepsi product placement scene at the end of World War Z.
The movie does come close to being good though. The scene at the military base where they're riding bikes is pretty awesome if I remember it correctly.
Also, World War Z is so perfectly adapatable as an anthology tv show with each episode telling a different story. Shame they wasted it on a movie.
Insert Richthofen voice line
Nolan North is also the original Deadpool. When I read a Deadpool comic this is the voice in my head not Van Wilder. Also for any gamers out there who haven’t played Saints Row IV, there’s an option in the game to change your characters voice to Nolan North. Just a fun little tidbit.
Is this movie available for streaming?
I don’t think it’s a detail if it’s literally the joke, that’s like saying the thumb drive joke in The Batman used a thumb as the punchline
<slow jerkoff gif>
