I thought I would start a thread about any happy or irritating interactions with in laws over the holidays.

I prepared a lovely Christmas spread for my in laws. My MIL had a stroke and she had just come out of the hospital. She was doing well but she still didn’t feel strong enough to cook Christmas dinner as she normally does. I volunteered to make dinner for everyone-a group of 8 people.

Everyone raved about my meal. My fiancé was so grateful and proud. Just before it was being served, my fiancé’s stepdad was carving the turkey in the kitchen. He said “I guess (MIL’s name) didn’t teach you to cook the turkey in a bag so it doesn’t get dry.” I was stunned and quiet. My MIL said “She doesn’t have to cook the same way I do. She will do it the way she wants.” My fiancé wasn’t in the kitchen at the time.

I pushed aside my hurt feelings and enjoyed Christmas with my in laws. Later, I told my fiancé what his stepdad said. My fiancé was annoyed and embarrassed. He said his stepdad is typically grumpy and negative. I made my fiancé laugh by calling his stepdad a “farting pregnant walrus.” The name is apt because my stepdad looks preggo and sometimes he farts in front of everyone. What a classy treasure he is.

How about you?
