I’ll also add that, although not in this circumstance, on a two lane road it is possible that a child might get off the bus, and then have to cross the street.
Yea this is usually the answer in most cases where there has been reported accidents with children getting off busses. They'd often end up crossing in front of or directly behind the bus in someone's blind spot to cross the street. Honestly though, you can't expect every kid getting off a bus to live on the same side of said street. This is why the law was put into place..
They should just cross at a crosswalk or a traffic light then. Children everywhere manage to do so. Are American children really that stupid?
Spoken like a self-righteous European. Most Europeans can’t perceive how massive the US is, but in a lot of suburban and rural areas the school busses may be picking children up 20-30 miles from the school in areas where there are no crosswalks or traffic lights. And that’s not just out in farm land down dirt roads. It’s just that the suburbs are just that huge. I grew up in California just outside a major city and we didn’t have crosswalks anywhere near us. The closest intersection was a 20 minute walk from my house.
