A shame. He has so much talent, but for whatever reason, he is throwing his career away.
Probably believes that he shouldn't be fighting for a place in a League One team, when he's started at the Liverpool Academy.
Shades of Adel Taraabt all over again.
He seemed to not fancy fighting for a place when we were (at the time not struggling THAT much) in the championship either
Correct me if I’m wrong but heard he’s a good player but a bit of a bellend? Would be worth a punt for championship team
No one really knows what he is, to be honest. We rarely saw him smile or show much joy after he scored. He's definitely a loner, but being a loner doesn't necessarily mean he's a bellend.
As he was mysteriously out "injured" for long stretches of the covid period there were stories that he's an anti-vaxxer who lives at home with a huge family of anti-vaxxers, so he would constantly have to isolate. Paunovic wouldn't comment on why he wasn't playing at the time or what his "injuries" were, so that added more fuel to the anti vax theory.
He refused to come off the bench last season at Hull, which is why he was frozen out. Obviously, people thought it was poor of him to do. However, falling out with Paul Ince doesn't necessarily make him a bellend because it's an argument with Paul Ince, who is a proven bellend. In fact, if there was an Olympic event for being a bellend Paul Ince would win a gold for Team GB.
Selles hasn't shown himself to be brilliant at man management or any sort of management at all really. So, he was never likely to solve the Ejaria conundrum.
It seems most likely that Ejaria is the problem, but the ineptitude of these recent managers does leave a slight lingering doubt at the back of your mind that it might not be entirely down to the player.
Thats interesting to hear your opinion on selles’ man management, as from what all the saints players have said - that was his best attribute. They all adored him. Had the lads running through brick walls for him, however the tactics were just ralph ball without the all important ralph. Can give examples of what he did if you’re interested but i’m too lazy to do it now
As a Saints fan, I think the players were just relieved to have someone who wasn't Nathan Jones in charge. Also, while Selles is a new face at Reading, he had already been at Southampton for a while and would have been familiar with the players. But yeah, our football under him was definitely a no tactics, just vibes sort of game. We reverted somewhat to Hassenhuttl's style, but executed poorly. We should probably have pushed harder for Jesse Marsh to be honest. He wasn't a great manager, but his style is similar enough to Ralph's that he might have been able to just slot in and get the lads playing. Oh well, I'm actually enjoying the championship a lot this season, so as long as it doesn't lead to a long term decay at the club I'm alright with how things turned out
He's certainly got them running around a lot. There is not much semblance of football breaking out, though. He has them all rushing forward, but the passing is sloppy, and they leave acres of space behind for the opposition to counter, especially on the wings. We concede from crosses practically every game, so he still hasn't learned from that. Although he has at least dropped the disastrous 4-2-2-2 formation.
The perception I have is that he is good at managing the younger players, who will do whatever he says without rocking the boat. However, he's not good at managing senior players who have some character and will share an opinion. A prime example is Sam Hutchinson, who gave a passionate interview after the Shrewsbury game and has barely been seen since.
I heard from a relative of one of the players recently who said the player thought the manager was "clueless."
How would him being anti-vax lead to him having to isolate more? If he and his family were anti the Covid rules/lockdowns etc surely they wouldn’t have adhered to the isolation rules either
More likely he didn’t buy the narrative and didn’t want to work with people who did. It’s all that dominated people for 2 years and turned some into absolute tyrants
A little bit of sympathy for him here, up-and-coming with Liverpool, very important in us avoiding the drop in 21/22, we pleaded and begged the EFL to let us sign him so he must have thought he was going somewhere that wanted him and was on the up. Since then he's had injury issues, didn't feature as we dropped out of the championship, and now for whatever reason can't get into a side that is stuck in the L1 relegation zone.
There's definitely some attitude issues there but this is also not the trajectory he'd have expected when he re-signed for us....
As West Brom fan, I was massively impressed by him a few years ago. He was possibly the best player on the pitch in our promotion season, when we played Reading at home.
The fact he is looking at sliding out of the league seems like a massive waste.
Kid was class, sad to see him go
Now means there's no-one currently contracted to Reading that we paid a fee for, just shows how long we've been under embargo...
He is some one who showed flashes of massive talent but it came rarely and always seemed a mental issue.
There was a game in the championship where you could see him loose all confidence in himself, he was never the same after.
It is concerning how quickly his career has disappeared and I hope he is okay in everything other than football.
9 goals in 124 games is crap let's be honest. So much potential but showed it very very rarely. Still, we'll always have Fulham away.
Should of sold him/try everything to get rid of him after refusing to come of the bench.
Massive step up from under 23s/under 18s to league level not everyone has it in them to do it Saturday Tuesday every week
Some desperate L2 club will pick him up, but I think Conference N/S is his limit.
When he played in the championship his close control was some of the best I’ve seen. Hes definitely championship level but for some reason he’s not playing.
this guy grew up with eze...
Now, that must reduce the wage bill.
PAY THE STAFF.
Don’t blame him
So much potential…
Alas. Such is football.
