Undoubtedly the big issue with Reading this season is Dai Yongge, but people are saying that Ruben Selles should be sacked for poor performance. I’d personally get new owners then give Ruben some time, but if we still play poorly then get him gone. What do you think?
We didn't choose Selles over Wilder, we wanted Wilder but he sensibly took his time to look at the club and very wisely decided to steer clear. Selles was the only person desperate enough to take a job at such a shambles of a club and by that point we were the only club desperate enough to hire a manager with an 11% win rate. It was only going to work out badly and now as you said we're stuck with him.
I mean who would want to join? I'm only really a fan of sackings if we've got a replacement lined up, and I really don't think anyone's desperate to manage us rn. Agree that we should've got Wilder if he was available in the summer, I wonder what happened there
Whether we should keep or get rid of Selles is so far down my priorities list I really haven't given it a second thought.
I personally think he's a nice stand up guy and I like him as a person significantly more than alot of our previous managers, whether that means he's any good as a manager is a completely different question.
Would be pointless a new man wouldn’t change it much with all the problems going on off the pitch and what decent manager would currently want to join?
Two wins and two draws in the last 4 league games. We were unlucky to draw today. I think he's improving. If we carry on like this we might avoid relegation. I think we get new owners, get out of the efl naughty list, not get relegated again, and then hopefully attract a better manager.
Didn’t we lose 3-1 to Barnsley in between Oxford and Lincoln?
Oh yeh aha. I blocked that out apparently.
I mean sure in theory, but I honestly don’t think it’ll make a difference. Pep would be facing the same circumstances. I don’t know what a drastic change would even look like, to be honest.
If we stay, it’ll be on a wish and a prayer. Nothing is going to change that at this point.
Over the summer we can try to breath and reassess.
/joke that said, they should call me.
If we weren't in such a precarious financial situation as a club, the answer would definitely be yes. Right now, not sure if we could get anyone better.
On the positive side, it seems like he's learned some lessons, is just starting to get a settled starting XI, and form is looking better because of it. Bringing Smith, Craig and Dorsett in has made us much more competitive. Defensively things are much better, though still with the odd mistake. In attack we create some good situations, but often things break down due to poor decision making. It should improve as the younger players get more experience.
I do hope he starts making better substitutions, the subs against Lincoln were bizarre, made us less of a threat, and it's been a problem throughout the season.
I really like Selles as a person, but it's pretty clear that he's not getting enough out of this squad. If this was a normal football club, then he probably should be sacked.
But the club is in a massive crisis, and I doubt that it can afford to fire Selles, and doubt even more strongly that there's a decent manager out there who could come in and fix the mess.
At this point I'm so much more concerned about if the football club will still exist this time next year that the issue of which division it plays in feels relatively minor. I was absolutely gutted about relegation last season. Possible relegation this year feels almost like a side issue.
There's really only two options: keep Selles and hope that a takeover changes things, or put him on gardening leave and have Hunt or Bowen manage the team. There's no chance of replacing him with an external candidate.
Yes, if possible.
Would you expect the next person to be any better? Reading have been through a string of managers in recent years and the fanbase has been keen to see them all sacked within a year or less. Sometimes they've got their wish, but always to no avail.
Worst case, the next person's just as bad 🤷
Joey Barton's out of a job lads I'd be careful.
He should've been sacked after Fleetwood.
Tim Dellor has just confirmed the rumours that Dai has changed the details of the takeover at the last minute, and it is now off, so expect Selles to be in charge for the foreseeable future.
We haven’t got the money to pay staff/tax bills. We deffo haven’t got the money to pay off a manager and hire a new one. But I agree selles was a poor choice in the summer when it looks like we had Wilder in reach.
