I am a Medical Doctor who has been applying heavily to roles in Venture Capital, Hedge Funds and other Finance roles, Biotech, Consulting and as a Medical Science Liaison. My name is VERY Jewish. Twice I have had a recruiter call me up and ask me about my name, both times asking how to pronounce it and both times asking it's origin. Both times I told them. Both times their demeanour drastically changed towards me after mentioning it's Jewish and I didn't get the job. They should not have asked. I also probably shouldn't have told them. But a quick Google clarifies to anyone that I'm Jewish based off of my name. You can't not be with my name.
I am born and raised in Sydney, which has a tiny Jewish population. Australia, unlike US, is very pro-Palestine. Automatically you're seen as a "child murderer" (something an Indian guy once said to me, juxtaposing the heavy Indian support of Israel online). The war is having an impact on me in every which way - emotionally, psychologically and now financially. It's gotten to the point I've started thinking about changing my name.
What protections do you have in Australia? In the U.S., you are not allowed to ask about ethnicity, religion, or national origin in job interviews, and the questions you were asked would open up the hiring companies to discrimination law suits. My recommendation is to start recording these interviews, and reporting the companies if this occurs again. So sorry you have to deal with this.
