Wake up, petty punishers & unkind therapists! This one? This right here lope? Is epic.
Thanks to the generosity of a friend, we had the money to hire a team of Latino men who live on the island and do jobs for people who need help. Watching them pack our furniture and boxes into the box truck we rented and the van our friends loaned us? Astonishing. They packed what we owned like they were playing Jenga, quickly and deftly.
Vaya con Dios, Santa Maria de las Vacas, a new crew of Latino saints has finally intersected Shauna's orbit. Dios mio, it only took what, nine years?
We’re so grateful for them. The daughter of one of these men is in Dan’s preschool class. When he realized that he was helping Teacher Dan, he wanted to do an even better job. We had a long talk at the end of the work about his time on the island, about his daughter, and about how he has worked to earn a good living being of service to others.
I love these nameless Latino men who speechify about being of service to others during work. They weirdly remind me of someone else who does that. Also, "Teacher Dan"? I thought this guy can't read.

It's amazing. It's just a few paragraphs down the page that she unironically stated that Vashon is impossible to live on these days because of all of the greedy rich people! Since she's a highly sensitive noticer of patterns I'm positive her next lope will draw a line between her refusal to have a job and pack their stuff because she's in her 50's, and the people who are not refusing to work taking their pay and tip and driving back to their Islandy home that they have not been ousted from.
Didn't she just imply, the week of the move, that they were able to hire movers with their own money? Also the fetishizing of Latino men is so cringy, doubly so on the back of her birthday post for D. Imagine being one of those guys and then reading this about yourself. Aside from the racist shit that makes her sound like someone’s out of touch elderly relative:
The claims that Vashon property values have “sky rocketed” does not seem to be borne out by property records. It also doesn’t really matter to Shauna, who a) doesn’t own a home and b) appears to me to have been paying well below market rate for her last island rental.
The claims that Vashon has been overtaken by airbnbs are also unsubstantiated. Only a small portion of Vashon properties are rentals. Only a small portion of those rentals are airbnbs.
Last but not least, I “can’t relate. Delete.” to the idea that for most of us, moving is “a marathon without power bars or water breaks.” This sentence tells me Shauna has no idea what happens for normal people in marathons (eating solid food isn’t it) or moving. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say “most of us” who hire movers at all hire them for both ends of the move.
Admire that she admits they couldn’t really “afford movers this time” as previously claimed. Shaking my head at whichever of her dear friends bankrolled that.
Replying to myself to clarify:
I slightly misspoke re property values on Vashon. Those have increased what seems like a lot. In some cases, single family homes were reevaluated in the past years to be 30+% higher in value.
What is more meaningful to rents however is property tax. Your taxes don’t increase 30% because your property value did. In the spiciest tax year recently, the Vashon Beachcomber says people’s property taxes mostly went up about 5%. For most homeowners on Vashon, this is going to translate to an increase in the low hundreds of dollars.
Come over to the other thread for spicy property tax takes! The tax bill for Shauna's "old" house was increased by less than $150 last year, and less than $600 in total since she moved there.

I had a very very very wealthy friend in college because her grandfather built a huge business and she kept that shit quiet because people would randomly expect her to pay for everything because she had family money. I can’t imagine if Shauna found a mark like her.
Here’s a shocker, Shauna. You and Dan are able-bodied. You did not need a friend’s money to hire Latino folks to pack your boxes. It must have been refreshing to talk to someone who works for their money; perhaps you should have asked for coaching on this skill.

She's not like other girls.
She’s given herself a voice for an audience of tens of thousands, while her child has no voice of their own. They depend on her for their literal survival, and she has made it clear that the family is barely scraping by financially. Even assuming she “asks” permission from the kids to post intimate details of their lives, how can they provide real consent? The imbalance of power makes that impossible. Mama sells their stories for the money that keeps coming and going in terrifying and unpredictable waves. How can they say “no” when cooking oil and shoes and rent are in play? Can any child truly “consent” to be written about this way on the internet, when they have no real concept of what that entails?
This is especially true with all she shares about very sensitive, private issues - medical history, NB/pronouns - D is so young, she’s boxing them in without any concern for how they may feel or see things in the future.
This, so much! She's going to regret this when her kids distance themselves from their oversharing mother as soon as they get the chance.

This 3 year “wait list?” Did not happen. The only hold up was HER. Either mongering for the dx until she got what she wanted, or just flat out not attending appts as scheduled over the course of 3 years. No one has a three year wait list. That’s absurd.)

Just putting this out there, but could those constant, othering reminders trigger an existential crisis? That poor kiddo.
I have two siblings who came into our family by adoption and my parents have never, ever identified them as adopted without the context of either talking about adoption, talking about medical history or (more recently because it's a thing) genealogy. And one of my siblings has a lot of complicated feelings about adoption so even the subject of adoption wasn't brought up in our house or between my parents and their friends. It wasn't a secret, it just was either not important enough to bring up (for one sibling) or too complicated and important to discuss casually (the other sibling). And like D and the Aherns, it's obvious just at a glance that they aren't biologically related, but then it almost becomes even less important to add on "adopted!" because... yeah, it's obvious. Anyone could look at D and Shauna and Dan and arrive at the correct conclusion - WHY does she constantly label them and other them and attribute what might be regular kid feelings to adoption and in all ways focus on that as one of the identifiers of their entire personality? I can't even imagine what my parents would have done to us if we labeled our siblings adopted and used it to identify them and their place in our family.
It’s really striking to me that Shauna emphasizes her child’s birthday as a particular point of hardship, tracing this back to adoption grief, but overlooks the impact of moving to a new home after spending your entire life in one area, and starting over at a new school with new friends. Anyone going through all of that would be feeling a lot of stress about a lot of things, yet Shauna focuses on adoption as the main source of grief.
It makes me wonder if Shauna feels we can trace all of our struggles to some primal wound, and focus on fixing that injury in order to resolve all the rest of our suffering and hardship. When I consider that she was raised by parents who lost a child very early in her life, and was likely affected by the emotional shifts in her household, my coal black heart can muster up some sympathy. Shauna likely suffered some serious damage right around at the time she was beginning to learn about other people’s emotions as part of forming attachments. I think it is one of the reasons she is always the sickest, the smartest, the best at air hockey, etc. She was a toddler whose world changed overnight, leading her to do more to keep her parents’ attention and shaking her trust in them because of differences in their behavior before the loss and after. Shauna is someone who would probably do better if she addressed that preverbal wound, but she lacks the honesty to consider anything but her parents’ failures. Being affected by grief isn’t a failure. She’s so wedded to the hero’s journey that she needs black and white villains, not people who hurt her because they were hurting. “Hurt people hurt people” suggests a chain of responsibility, and we all know how Shauna feels about that.
I wonder about Shauna’s motives in writing posts about her family members like this. Is it just about establishing a narrative where their struggles are connected to past events that can’t be changed, like being adopted, rather than ongoing struggles in which Shauna bears some agency? (One chaotic and badly planned move after the other.)
I think she focuses on adoption as the source of D's upset because it's the one trauma in their life where she can paint herself a saint. In her narrative, D's "second mama" cruelly abandoned them, and Shauna swooped in and gave them a "real" mama who always knows how to help and guide them. If D's feelings are tied to adoption, it must be about the pain their other mama caused, and has nothing to do with Shauna's treatment of them in the TEN YEARS since.
Basically, she's pinning the blame for D's pain on their birth family and casting herself (again) as a saint by contrast. It isn't about primal wounds or anything else. It's just shitting all over D's family of origin to make herself feel better about the terrible life she's stuck them in. Which, of course, can only serve to make D feel worse and worse.

This comment is so excellent. I often think about Shauna and her therapy, or what we know of it. She makes it sound very CBTish, but I know we have therapists on here who can correct me! I've just had years of therapy for all sorts of reasons, and prior to the onset of an acute issue last summer, I was getting a lot out of family systems therapy. It sounds sort of like what you're suggesting here, for good reason. But then I had this sudden emergent need and switched temporarily to CBT and omg she needs it. I'm being pretty glib, but my therapist doesn't give a shit about my childhood wounds. She is trying to help me rewire my brain to address a rather distressing problem that I am fully responsible for fixing and that impacts my family on a daily basis. If I don't do this really hard work, I will continue to fail my family. I feel like Shauna needs less navel gazing, which my previous therapy kind of encouraged (and frankly I will return to it once I get a handle on this issue, because I need that too lol), and more daily homework, practicing new ways of thinking that run contrary to what you thought was normal, if that makes sense? She takes no responsibility for anything and I find it absolutely infuriating.
She wrote about preparing essays (complete with her own insights into herself in the margins) to review with a therapist she saw in NYC. She also said she did a year of EMDR post-shattering. I agree with you that it seems as if she’s avoided therapeutic modules based on changing behavior and learning more effective emotional regulation and coping skills. It’s hard to find a good therapist, and it’s possible she never landed on one who was particularly skilled in this area, but therapy only works if you want things to change in your life, and are willing to do the work of making changes. I am not sure we’ve seen from Shauna any desire to do things differently, only an endless search for a magic diagnosis that will absolve her of all responsibility for managing her own life. It’s hard to picture her sticking through therapy that forces her to do and feel things that are hard because they are uncomfortable, or require her to recognize that she’s obligated to fix maladaptive behavior (like writing about family members’ private issues online), even if they developed because of hard things she went through in her own life.
I’m really glad to hear CBT has been helpful to you as part of a therapy framework that also leaves room for a therapeutic module aimed more at validation and insight than targeting behaviors to address, and your experience is a good reminder that it doesn’t have to be black and white. A person can use therapy as a way to understand themselves better and as a tool for making change in their life. I don’t think Shauna has had either experience.
And if you thought your kid had adoption trauma, wouldn't you get them into therapy?

I can remember only two birthday cakes: L once had some kind of a mama-made peach cake with “heft”, iirc, and Dan’s disco bin funfetti monstrosity.

At some point in the aughts, pie really took hold as the quirky "not like other desserts" choice among a certain subset of people. Some of the most annoying people I know had pie at their wedding reception. Cake is definitely a SST compared to the homely bowler hat and suspenders wearing pie in Shauna's mind.

I have birthday pie every year because my birthday is in August and it doesn't make sense to me to not use all that glorious fruit. Everyone else in my family has birthdays in the dead of winter, which I now also call "buttercream season" in honor of all the buttercream that I make in a few short months.

Thank you, DF auxerrois! We ordered from an award-winning bakery that specializes in pies, and they were everything they should have been, nothing soggy or gloppy. A bad pie is truly an abomination.

Hahaha, one of the most annoying weddings I had to work back in my wedding event planning days was one where the hipster bride and groom had pie instead of wedding cake. For 200. (They also wanted mason jars for drinkware but as this was an very exclusive private golf club, the GM said no and the poor dears had to suffer with crystal. Alas.)
Was there a stain panel on the bride’s dress? I’m guessing the GM wouldn’t have gone for Whoopi’s cushions either.

The mason jar talk reminds me of my late grandfather (JT).
We took him out to eat at Po' Folks which was a casual dining place that leaned heavily on the hillbilly/country theme (as the awful name would suggest). When they brought JT his drink in a mason jar he lost his shit. He cursed and ranted that when he grew up he was dirt poor but he NEVER had to drink from a mason jar and wasn't about to PAY to drink from one now.
Fast forward several decades and my family was at a different casual dining place and here come the drinks in mason jars. It was a race to see which one of us was going to bring up JT's rant.
I'm with you and JT. Get that mason jar away from me. And don't bring me my food on a slab of wood or a baking tray or, worst of all, a disposable paper boat (ooh, if you have an actual sit down restaurant you better have dishes. . . paper boats are for food at the fair!).

On Wednesday, I’m going to publish a recipe that first appeared on Gluten-Free Girl. That site is not available to anyone but us now. We’ve been looking at the recipes that still hold up for us. So many of them meet that rainy Tuesday evening hunger need.
This week, we’re bringing back the recipe for a incredible kale and rice salad we published more than a decade before, one based on a deli salad from PCC Community Markets. I shopped there for 8 years before we moved to Vashon. I’m so glad to be able to shop there again, occasionally. We’ve changed the salad to be a bit easier and meet our needs now.
Starting this week, you’ll be receiving a brief story and a recipe we’ve updated from Gluten-Free Girl every Wednesday.
So the kids just moved and are facing trauma, but Shauna is going to make them a kale and rice salad? But when Dan made a hot meal of white fish with a nut coating (I'm sorry I know it's from Chef Dandaid but in theory white fish and hazelnut sounds delicious) Shauna was outraged because the Covid-traumatized kids needed comfort food and fish ain't it? I get that she owns the recipes or should still own them but not sure how domain name verses website content being sold would allow her to say that the site is only available to them now.

Unless she downloaded a copy of the contents before handing the site over as she shouldn't be able to log into the site and access files from it.
We don't know who "owns" those posts anymore; did she just sell the domain name or did she sell it plus all of the GFG site assets?

I have the same question. I don't understand why someone would pay, especially as much as was reported they paid, for the domain name without the IP (the recipes).
I think she is attempting to say that the content on their former site is not available to anyone but them, but it simply is not true that "the site" is only available to them. It's available to anyone.
I agree and I am floored that she keeps saying this as it could drive traffic there and if I were her, I wouldn’t be drawing attention to the fact that it clearly isn’t hers anymore.
And even that's not true - all the content is in the Wayback Machine. Shauna loves a good marketing technique, and exclusivity is one of her favs!
If it didn’t rain last night, she doesn’t have to publish a recipe today. Those are the rules.
Hot on the heels of their moving woes to a tiny apartment where three weeks later they’re still eating off paper plates because they haven’t unpacked fully, even after supposedly letting go of 50% of their belongings, three missed lopes already and she thinks they have planned this iteration of anything?
