As the title indicates, I want to do well in the trades (electrical) and I want to earn respect from my bosses. Do you have advice on earning respect (key term) from em?
now this is the way đ¤Ł
Fuck yo sammy
First, respect yourself.Â
Not every foreman is going to like or respect you and that is OK. In fact, you don't want some scumbag, baglicker, piece of shit Forman to like you anyway.
Follow the contract and the stew on the job.
Do good work, it's faster to do it right once than rushing through it twice.
This, 100%
Definetly gonna want to get some knee padsâŚ
San Francisco slippers
I tell every apprentice all about how it's good for your long-term physical health and how you see the old electricians walking all shitty, and I say, "You wanna end up looking like him? He's only 35."
I don't tell em the real reason.
Promotion pads
Promotion lotion
swallow
Show up on time and work to the best of your ability. All I can ask my guys is to try their best. I have an apprentice right now who gives me headaches, but I know heâs trying every day and thatâs what matters.
If you don't mind me asking what are some stuff that he/she is doing to annoy you? I'm not in the same trade as you but I like to ask these questions so I know WHAT NOT to do
How can a new apprentice avoid giving headaches?
By giving good heads?
Who gives a fuck If he respects you. Just make sure that paycheck is right

Do the work youâre paid for. No more, no less
The boss can give two fucks about you. And the company sees you as an easily replaceable cog in the machine
No sense it doing anything extra for the boss or the company
I'd say stick to the contract, give them 8 for 8 and show up on time everyday. If the foreman is happy with that then they are worth respect. If they ask for more with nothing to give, just keep keeping on.
Show up and do your job. The foremen is just another asshole on the job, respect yourself and show respect to others.
There are foremen that are big swinging dicks and like to act tough - and they might treat you with less than respect. But fuck âem, just show up and do your job.
Pay attention, write shit down, keep lists, keep your work area clean, help out your crew, anticipate your JWâs needs, pay attention to where things are, so when people ask you can help. At the very least be courteous with other trades.
More important than respect from foremen is to take your breaks, work safely, observe clean up time, pay attention to what your brothers and sisters and doing and NOT doing, and follow the contract.
Weâre all out here together, and we have to look out for each other.
do the best you can at the tasks you're given. doing good work will earn you a basic level of respect. but you also need to learn to advocate for yourself. sucking up to foremen or just always doing what you're told doesn't earn you respect. you need to know how to give pushback and stand up for yourself, but only in situations where it would be acceptable to do so. you can't just be an asshole. it's definitely a skill you have to master.
My 2 rules that I told myself to never give an inch on when I got into the apprenticeship.
Work hard, continue to learn and stay true to yourself and youâll be respected by the people who matter most. And those people are your brothers and sisters youâre working side by side with in the trenches.
Even you posting that says something. What about the foreman respecting you?
Cup the balls...they always love that!
Show up on time, and just do your job. You donât have to kiss ass, you donât have to bend rules. Just be easy to work with, and do the job.
Work smart and efficient, also don't take shit
Don't be a kiss ass!
Respect was earned in the past just by showing up on time or few mins early (dont touch your tools til start time!!) be polite, little small talk, turn that wrench until your break times, be professional and call it a day. Now itâs just gross. Not saying all but now it feels just like fucken high school. Respect is a popularity contest now.
In times like this, you post bait?Â
"What can men do against such reckless bait?"
Stop caring about respect and do your job.
Whatever you do, donât fart in the job trailer.
In all seriousness though, be on time, always keep busy, and ask about something if you donât know.
Step one is to do exactly as youâre told. If you arenât sure what needs to be done, simply following orders to a T will get you most of the way there. And if something is fucked up itâs not your fault, you did what the boss said.
Give an honest 8 hours. Donât fuck around on your phone all day. When your boss gives you something to do figure out how to do it and then figure out how to streamline it.
This is a big one. If you see the job is out of something or you take the last of something from the lockup, say something. Shoot your boss a text. If they donât order it now itâs their problem.
Screw the respect. Youâre there to do a job, not to appease other men
Just be a kind person and kind people will reciprocate, assholes will always be assholes
The moment I notice I don't have to explain every step and my apprentice becomes a self starter is when you're on my good side. I have some guys work for me that you have to remind them to breath in and out.
Show up every day on time, do your damn job(stay off the phone), show interest in the project.
Thatâs the best advice. Short, succinct and to the point đŤĄ
Iâm a Foremen from time to time, not all foremen are equal. Some wonât respect anyone and some care more about their guys than anything else. If you are a solid worker thatâs all you need to worry about. Also side note being a foremen isnât really fun or worth it most of the time. You get a little extra money (10%) in my local and a lot of bullshit to deal with. The meetings and emails alone are awful then trying to make sure everyone has enough work/ tools/partsâŚ. I miss just showing up and working and not having to worry about anything else.
Walk up to him in the morning and say with a serious look in your face: ââŚ..ssup, cocksucker!â
Then just keep walking in to work. R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
I just casually bring up the fact that I'm a veteran. That usually gains instant respect from most people.
If an ape can fuck my wife id respect him
Fresh pair of knee pads control gag reflex swallow make sure you wipe your mouth upon leaving the foreman trailer.
Ehhh I like the gagging, and stressed look, make em struggle and earn that load.
Suck his cock
Ccup the balls, mind the step children
Your question should be reversed.
Let em see that boy pussy
Throw everyone around you under the bus.
Always compliment the foreman.
Step one is showing up. Step two is trying, just listening and doing your best.
Speak up.
Just try your best to learn and do a good job.
Use a lot of penetrox
Do your job and be the best you can be. If he likes you, he likes you. If he doesnât, he doesnât. Itâs not about the Foreman, itâs about you doing the best you can and feeling good about what you do.
Just do good work, and donât be a dick. But also donât be a pushover and if they disrespect you, shove back a bit. Nobody likes a doormat except the one wiping their feet
Show up early, do your job, ask questions⌠always carry a pocket knife or Leatherman
Listen. If something is said that you donât understand, ask questions. If you have a hard time remembering a set of instructions, write it down or even record whatâs being told to you.
Simply show up on time, show interest in work, and do a good job, no one likes a suck up and foremen see through that
Work
Do their job also and he might like you.
The way I do it, is I'm like a ghost. I lie on all paper work, I'm NEVER within earshot, I pencil whip all pms, never ever use parts, sleep on the job, take 50 smoke breaks, never complain, never turn my radio on, fix all my shit without help, never have the right tools (company provided) never need a raise, and last but not least never and I mean never Ever volunteer for overtime.
I am nothing like you, but I do aspire to be that way.
Do your job in a timely manner that allows you to also to do work in a professional and workman like manner.
Here is the advice I got from an old timer. Be early, be ready to work, and be sober.
This is another gem, "always carry a hankie, and dont fuck from the bottom." Aka keeo your nose clean and dont fuck up.
Why worry?
Foreman respects you, foreman doesn't respect you. Who cares. Run the pipe and cash the checks. Keep life simple and respect will come.
Why? Just do your job to the best of your abilities, who gives a shit what your boss thinks? Respect yourself first.
Act busy and scared.
Show up on time and do your job. That's been working out for me so far
Show up on time and
Do your job. That's been working

I donât know them so itâs hard to say what exactly they ârespectâ but most bosses appreciate hard work and ingenuity. Do your best to get the job done correctly and build upon that as time goes on.
Have the full tool list available to you, at the jobsite.
Show up 5 to 10 minutes early, work up to the bell.
Donât hide, do your job.
Work safe, but with a common sense mindset of job accomplishment.
Keep the foreman informed of job progression, material shortfalls, future problems, etc.
Clean work area throughout the day.
We are paid to work, donât become distracted by those who think otherwise.
Itâs easy to step up and show initiative. It might be a good idea to even just let them know. Hey, I would like to take on a little bit more responsibility possibly even shadow what you do just be honest with them at the end of the day we like to, weâre all brothers and sisters in this organization and when you make one brother stronger, you make the whole organization stronger. I would love it if I could make two more of me out in the field some people just wanna show up and be told what to do if youâre one of the ones that is ambitious and you wanna learn it will show. Show up on time try not to miss days. Follow our union contract. if you present yourself as a professional thatâs how people will see you if you present yourself as a jokester well they will see that too and as a journeyman with 20+ years experience I wonât just work with anybody , Iâm willing to teach anyone who wants to learn, but I wonât go out of my way to teach an ungrateful apprentice Jack  shit. Deep down, I feel like everybody wants to be successful in their career. Sometimes it just comes more easily to others. Good luck
Thatâs a great idea! Iâd much rather show my work ethic instead of telling others about my work ethic.
Depends on the foreman. If they're actually playing their role then doing a good job, not leaving loose ends, and generally not being a problem will earn you respect. For most it's just the work you do and how competent you are.
Just work and shut up
Work hard and it will come
Respect is a mutual thing. You give it, you get it. The people that constantly show disrespect generally donât get it from anyone that matters.
This should be the least of your worries, let your work speak for you. Donât be a kissass either, thatâll just make you seems like a brown-noser to your co-workerâs. If you feel disrespected by your Forman, you need to call him out immediately or itâll just get worse. Give respect, earn respect, thatâs law.
But to be completely honest, fuck respect. Do your 8 and get the fuck out.
Ask questions and get the coffee order correct and be 15 - 20 minutes early for work. Don't try to be the apprentice Foreman. You are there to learn not to score points. Just get through the apprenticeship. Volunteer with some of the clubs if you can and the apprentice events, show up to a few functions when you can, and go to the union meetings. Your main objective though, is to pay your dues and learn. Dont do anything that is going to put you on anyone's shit list. I found out the hard way that it's not worth it to make anyone respect you. Respect yourself and if you really feel like anyone is trying to bitch you out, choose your battles. That's why we have local area stewards and business agents.
Idk I treat all my guys like human beings and they preform quite well. Being a dick never got my crew anywhere so I treat em how I wanted to be treated as a worker.
I honestly could care less what my foreman thinks of me, you should do the same.
Tell him youâll teach him all about bondage if he teaches you all about bonding and grounding?
a foreman is just a glorified construction worker, donât kiss ass. be a man and greet him as one, but donât get on your knees to please
Bang his wife
Try not to use your teeth only throat
Good on pull strong on chirp
As a foreskin, I want my guys to do the best work they can. I donât care how long it takes you but I demand perfection. I had a relatively new journeyman on my crew take more than a day to stub up two 2â rigid pipes in an open trench, I think he took way to long but they came up perfectly which is what I want so I never had to reprimand him. Also, I appreciate effort in learning, I am now a superintendent in the mining and asphalt industry. I am laying a guy off because a year in, he isnât making any good faith effort to learn the whys and the hows of the process. I was grilling him recently about what circuits were in a cabinet and he didnât know, despite being nearly a year with us, 6 months on a moderately sized job, he wired the cabinet and didnât have anything locked out and was opening a live 480v junction box. Also had him build a rack and he put a conduit entry behind the backplate in the cabinet he was working on. Kind of reassurance in my decision to let him go. I feel bad about it but I canât have poor workmanship and a lack of understanding on what weâre doing. Iâve tried correcting the issues while I was still a foreman but there is no improvement and no interest in improving. I have a cub right now that is doing very well which makes me happy. I just want good workmanship and a little effort in what we do.
How much experience did the year in guy have?...LOTO compliance usually and unfortunately is a by product of the culture set by the lack of enforcement by crew leaders and supervisors. Did he have a boundary set around said junction box? Was he considered qualified personnel w arch flash certification? Are we expected to believe that perfection and actual code is the same thing? Is the best work a guy can do be perfect to everyone?.... how did he wire a cabinet without any circuit knowledge đ¤ I mean did he throw a motor in the cabinet and put the overload under the conveyor?... what's the cub doing that's worth more to you? Young and still gives a shit? Still fresh and not completely burnt out on life yet from working like a dog for nothing? Are you hiring?
- It's ok to pretend like you like them
- you might learn to really like them
- be on time
- don't miss work days
Iâll skip the part where I could be a douche and tell you to get your knees ready. I donât know your classification (CW, Apprentice, JW) but it really doesnât matter. 1. Show up on time. 2. Whenever a problem comes up tell your foreman / JW about that problem. But also present a couple possible solutions to fix that problem (it shows that youâre there to help and that you care) 3. Be ready to work, uphold the union standard the brothers before us worked so hard to set in place. 4. Ask questions and be ready to learn, the person that says/thinks they know everything is the real retard 5. Give 8 hours of honest work for 8 hours of pay 6. Take pride in your work. We need to lose the âlooks good from my house mentalityâ but at the same time donât take 2 hours to put up 1 stick of conduit 7. Separate yourself from the crowd of âturdsâ in any way you can, they will drag you down. 8. Be the first person up when that clock strikes 12:30, Donât milk your breaks just because other people are. 9. Donât throw another member of your crew under the bus if they mess something up, talk with them and correct the mistake if possible. Nobody likes a douchebag. 10. For the love of god HAVE FUN! let the small stuff roll off your shoulder. Weâre here to have fun & get shit done.
Iâm a foreman out of 347 and these are a few of the things my JWâs and foreman taught me when I was coming up. Earning peoples respect takes time. Never change who you are just so someone will like you, no amount of money or respect/ recognition is worth changing who you are.
hope this helps
