Paris Olympics: Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey breaks record in race she had never tried before, starring at city swimming trials
NewsHe didn’t make any political comment lol, just commending an athlete representing HK. You seem to be the one attaching politics to a simple celebratory comment.
she could have represented ireland but she didn't (this is what he means perhaps)
Amazing Siobhan
What a legend she is
Tbf, if anyone were to do it, it would be Haughey.. Hk’s best by a mile
Can’t help but roll my eyes when I once saw a loser on the internet that says “she can do this because she is rich and has a pool at home!” As if you can get up everyday at 5am to train if you have a pool 🙄
Anyway, she is a legend!
She has a pool at home? Like a club house downstairs or you mean like a mansion….
What I understand (cannot fact check it is some time ago) is that it is a mansion in the mid levels
It certainly helped .. you can’t deny that
Not denying that but just think that having a pool at home doesn’t make you a world level athlete automatically
That’s true.
Yes, and I will not forget reading the story that during Covid she went to an icy lake at 5 every morning to train because the pool was closed. It's not the kind of dedication everyone has. Can't deny that financial stability is a big factor, but she is the real deal.
The Olympics haven't started... How is that related?
The 26-year-old, who will lead Hong Kong’s quest for Olympic glory in Paris in July, stepped well outside her established repertoire as she opted to enter the 800 metres freestyle in the local trials for the Games.
...
Haughey had already qualified for Paris, having earned spots in her favoured disciplines, the 100m and 200m freestyle, as well as in the 50m and 400m freestyle and the 100m breaststroke.
How is HK allowed to enter the Olympics? It’s not even a state
How about Puerto Rico? Or Guam?
i don't see why not. taiwan compete
Well that’s because Taiwan competes as Chinese Taipei and is a sovereign state unlike Hong Kong.
Olympics entries are technically not represented by nations, but the Olympics committee and we have our own Olympics committee.
And she's been insisting to join the races as a HKer.
Thumbs up.
