You did not find a good solution. Suggestions, some art pieces would be great on that wall. Or a living moss/succulent display (or a few) if you can keep up with the watering. You could do one of either and some shelving. If you only want to hang 2 items they'll need to be rather large.

Two large photos of the before staircase? Not sure about that. At the very least put frames on the photos.

Honestly some sort of panelling would better than this.

Indoor hanging modular plant wall is what I see working for some of the space here.

You should install shiplap boards on that and make an accent, then hang some pictures on that.

Look at a site like Pottery Barn and filter for large art . 2 or 3 pieces could brighten and break up the wall.
