My boyfriend is getting a house and we are moving in. I am in charge of the decoration. He loves the color red and I want to have it integrated in the decor. I love pink, and blue, so I want to have something that we both like . I would love some ideas. I like cozy styles in homes, almost like a classic decoration style, but combined with simplicity if that makes sense (not too overcrowded and full of things). He already owns a dark red couch that we are planning on keeping for the living room. I would appreciate some ideas since I am lost.
I’m always stuck on “flow” in a house. Not going from one room to another and thinking “well, this is a drastic change from the rest of the house.
Red, pink, and blue.
So you have a dark red sofa that’s a given, for a starting point. A rich blue integrated into this room is a great way to get one of your favorite colors in play. Think a rug, perhaps. An upholstered chair with a pattern, some throw pillows. Choose a pattern that has the red, and a rich blue in it. It can have a few other colors, as well. Now find a few other things with the rich blue. A vase, a tray for an ottoman, a throw, even a small table. Spread the blue around, not just in one area.
So maybe the kitchen has rich blue dish towels, a few blue and white dishes in a glass cabinet or displayed on a wall.
Then you can add in pink in another room, like a bedroom, but think more of a blush pink. A soft version, a hint. The rich blue can work in here, too. A rug, a detail in the bedding, like a pillow or throw again against ivory or white bedding.
What you’re doing is using the blue as the bridge. So while the strongest colors in any one room may be different, the running thread is close to the same.
Thank you so much! I loved your advice
You are welcome! Have fun decorating your new home!
Red is a really tough color for interior design. A picture of the couch would be helpful!
Okay! This is more of a wine color, much easier to work with! I would lean into rich, moody dark colors like navy, deep green, and goldenrod. I'm not sure how much light your new place gets, but if it doesn't get a lot, dark wall could feel cave-like (maybe good or bad depending on your preferences). If you want to keep the walls light, I think a cream like you have in this photo would be great with darker colors in the art work, rug, curtains, etc.
The couch also has a sentimental value for him, and it’s very comfy so we really like it
Own or renting?
He is owning
You (both of you, preferably) should collect images of interior styles that you like. On Pinterest, you can create different boards for each of your design inspiration, see each other's boards, and create one/some that you collaborate on together. I also just searched for "red pink blue interior" on Google and it came up with a lot of examples and you can add any ones you find outside of Pinterest to your Pinterest boards. I would also do this with red couches, something like "dark red couch interior" because red tends to be hard to match in interiors.
