Salam!
I thought I'd just share my experience with trying to get a TEFL job in China and South Korea so far, because I use Reddit a ton for information on the process, and couldn't find anything that matches my current experiences.
So, I'm a white hijabi revert who studied linguistics at a big Canadian university, with research experience and childcare experience. I started the process of finding a teaching job in China (for context, I asked to be in Guangzhou because I found the Islamic history in the city to be very interesting) in late May and got a job with EF Education for a job in China. Read online the pay is awful and it's kinda a horrible experience working with them, but went with it anyways. However, a few weeks ago they locked me out of my visa portal account, my recruiter doesn't reply to emails or seem to know anything about the document process here in Canada. A friend had a family member getting a work visa for China, and told her that there were a lot of questions regarding religion, including views on Uyghurs.
Between those two things, I got a little nervous about my visa application being denied due to my faith, so I applied for some jobs in South Korea. Tonight I just had a recruiter in South Korea tell me that "no private school is going to hire you if you wear a hijab. We had a similar thing with another girl, and she only got a job once she took her hijab off. If you want to think about it and decide to not wear it for work, please message me."
Taking my hijab off is not on the table for me, and isn't something I will consider at all.
As of right now, I will be finding an affordable place to complete a TEFL certification and apply for another job in China or Japan. If anyone has any experience in this domain, I'd love to hear about it, but as of currently just thought I'd share in case any other hijabi is looking to do a similar thing as me!
What about Malaysia? It's a southeast asian muslim country. I think they are looking for TESL teachers cause we here speak english but as second language, usually in private institutions. Maybe for TEFL you can approach Indonesia, our muslim majority neighbour too.
[Edit : it's a common knowledge among us muslim southeast asians here that koreans and chinese (northeast asians) don't like hijabs because they are too brainwashed as a homogenous society. Japanese can be a bit more positive if you are a tourist but still you will be alienated. They are even racist to dark skins. Even us southeast asiana can be considered dark to them. They even have issue with non muslim southeast asians just because our countries aren't as developed and they have lighter skin. They call us "jungle asians" or "monkeys". But since you're white, you won't experience racism, but purely islamophobia. The young northeast asians are more exposed and more positive. But unfortunately they aren't in power yet]
They just don't like anything foreign to them EXCEPT white people who aren't muslims. Their white worship is too extreme. Even here in southeast asia it's crazy how white worship is but northeast asia is on another level of inferiority complex. And another level of superiority complex.
