HerOneBag Posting Requirements

I've been seeing link only posts getting reported. In all cases, these appear to just be ads for products with no real context to why they're posted.

I'm not interested in closely monitoring and moderating the content of these posts. I think everyone here understands the purpose of this subreddit, and we should all have pretty good judgment for what is acceptable to post.

Going forward, if you want to include a link, please submit a text post with context for the link.

If anyone has a good reason to bring link only posts back, feel free to message me directly with why, and I might change my mind.

Edit: 12/30/19

Direct link posts were disabled 2+ years ago because they were being misused to link to external sites with no context.

Photos and links are allowed! Please include them in your regular post as necessary.

Also, it is ok to post about sales and even personal entrepreneurial projects for new product ideas so long as this is done tactfully and respectfully. Please avoid spamming a ton of links and always provide context.

Given how large this subreddit has grown, I'm considering enabling some features.

What would you like to see?

I've heard a recurring EDC thread would be good, perhaps weekly? What else?

How about user flairs and/or post flairs? What options would you like?

Any other suggestions or requests?

Warm layers for Europe in June/July?

I’m travelling to Denmark, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland and I’m not sure how warm I need to pack! I’m taking linen pants, jeans, a skirt, shorts and a couple dresses + 5 singlets/tees. For warm stuff I’m bringing a cotton knit jumper but am worried this isn’t enough (I run cold!). What would be a good second layer? I have a thick(ish) leather jacket that goes with everything but is a bit bulky. Would it be worth bringing? I’m not keen on a denim jacket as it won’t go with my jeans. Otherwise I have a slicker/rain jacket type thing but it’s not very nice looking or warm. How cold should I expect it to get?

I’m bringing a 60L pack and a 40L daypack. I am an anxious traveller and need some creature comforts with me lol

Porto and Lisbon packing in June

Im leaving for Porto and Lisbon soon for 1.5 weeks. I’ve been reading that Porto will feel cooler despite the temperature. So I’m not sure if what I packed is good enough.

I packed:

2 shorts 1 white jeans 2 linen pants 1 maxi dress 1 denim jacket 1 tank top 4 short sleeved tops

Is there anything else I should bring for this time of year?

Thanks!

Trip Report (6 month old, Nursing Mom, Barcelona for ~ 5 nights)

Browsed this sub a lot while preparing for a tricky packing situation and just got back and wanted to share what worked!

The parameters:

  • Traveling with baby (6 months), who is nursing, so every single item needed to be nursing friendly and the baby spits up a ton, so we usually go through bibs and shirts a few times each day at home
  • Travelling standby to Europe (partner works for an airline) so I didn't really know where we were going or what the weather was going to be. We looked at flights to Germany, Scotland, Athens, Milan, and finally ended up in Barcelona, but I needed to be packed for anything. We planned to be there for 5-6 days.
  • Decided to take a ~46L backpack with all of the clothes and toiletries for me, partner, and baby. We also had a travel crib carry-on (Guava Lotus) and a personal item each (I used a Kavu crossbody) with flight essentials and diapering essentials (and most of out electronics/cords). No stroller - I wore the baby on the flights and she had her own seat which helped a lot.
  • I knew we were going to buy diapers abroad, and book something with a washer.

I packed this in the 46 L bag (plus my partners clothes which fit in a medium packing cube):

  • Toiletries
    • Moisturizer, Sunscreen (Face & Body), Hairbrush, Hair ties, Deodorant, Toothbrush/paste, Floss, Retainer, Mascara, Lipstick, Chapstick, some jewelry
    • Pillcase with meds, Earplugs, Hand sanit., Eye mask, Bandaids
  • My clothes:
    • Wore on plane, but included below - Black linen pants, White Tank, Nursing bra, Striped pullover, Veja Sneakers
    • 2 x Outerwear (White Linen button down, Striped pullover)
    • 4 x Tops (Black Wool Tee, Black/Clay Nursing tanks, White tank)
    • 4 x Bottoms (Skinny Jeans, lightweight shorts, red skirt, black linen pants)
    • 1 x Black Nursing Jumpsuit
    • 1 x tan nursing cover, doubles as a scarf (We are Amma brand)
    • 2 x PJs (Shorts set, black leggings)
    • 5 x Underwear (pack 4)
    • 3 x Nursing Bras (pack 2)
    • 4 x Nursing pads
    • 4 x Socks (pack 3)
    • Bathing suit
    • Veja Snerkers, Teva Sandals & Dressy Sandals
  • Baby's clothes:
    • Wore on plane, but included below - Sleeper, Bib
    • 4 x Sleepers (pack 3)
    • 4 x Bibs (pack 3)
    • 6 x Onesies (4 short, 2 long sleeve)
    • 2 x Pants
    • 2 x Rompers
    • 1 x Socks, 1 x Bow, 1 x Sunhat
    • 1 x Swim Hat/Swimsuit/cloth swim diaper
    • 6 x Burp cloths

After trip thoughts:

  • The black jumpsuit was the MVP, I wanted to wear it for everything (touring museums, going to dinner, ect). The black wool tee was also great, I bought it for the trip to try out merino and never had to wash it even though I wore it 3 times, it still smelled good. I usually had a daytime outfit and nighttime outfit for dinner, and I don't think I repeated any outfits except the jumpsuit.
  • I only wore the lightweight shorts to the beach, but I know I would have worn them more if we had gone somewhere warmer like Athens. I did not need both skinny jeans and black linen pants, but I was afraid we were going to end up somewhere colder so threw the jeans in last minute. I never wore the black leggings at all.
  • We ended up doing laundry 2 times instead of 1 time. I could have packed less if I had known that!
  • I think we packed the right amount of stuff for the baby! The bibs were key to keep the shirts from getting too wet with drool. She didn't use everything, but baby onesies are so small that a couple extra are worth it. We brought some baby toiletries and a few little toys but put those in the personal items, so not included in the pack list above.
  • We had to buy such a large pack of diapers at the store! We used like 12 of 56 in the pack! I ended up stuffing most of the extra in the travel crib bag to get them home.
  • Packing all the stuff for the beach day (which we only spent a couple of hours at and I didn't get in the water at all) added SO MUCH stuff (swim suits, Tevas, shorts) and I don't think it was worth it for this trip!
  • We had a great time! Travelling with a baby before they are mobile and right before starting solids was great. I loved baby wearing instead of doing a stroller (we took the metro everywhere! couldn't uber since we didn't have our carseat but we thought the metro was great). It was definitely a workout, but she slept so great in the carrier while we took walking tours and went to museums.
Do you still wear a mask

When flying? If yes, is is a surgical mask or kn95 Type of mask.

Period Disc Question from a Noob

I decided to give period discs a try and wouldn’t you know that the darn thing came on the last day of my period which (naturally) won’t return until I am on my trip. I have decided to bring the disc along and give it a try as I am not going anywhere far from a store where I could find supplies if I needed them (and I’ll take a day or two’s worth of backup). But I won’t likely be able to access boiling water, which I know is recommended for sterilization before you first use the disc. Can I sterilize at home and still safely use during my trip?

Please help me find merino tops for shorties

I’ve needed to replace most of my wardrobe this year after illness totally changed my body. I’m trying to buy fewer things and wear them more often—more like a one-bag approach to life. I really want to find merino tops but don’t want to invest in the price or even one when I don’t see anything on the market to fit my body.

I’m 5’2” and tees that fall to the hip on regular models will come down to my bum. I dislike having to tuck in shirts, especially when they’re so long, because too much fabric bunches around my waist and hips and makes me look bigger than I am. I’ve been quite pleased with all of the “cropped,” “mini,” and “baby” tees that I can just size up/down and look normal in (but I’m not at an age for midriff-baring and don’t love showing my upper arms where I’ve lost all muscle tone).

I’ve searched all the regular merino places I know of, and none seems to make a shorter or boxier tee. Icebreaker and Smartwool stocked limited crops last year that seem to all be sold out. Does anyone know of merino tees that come in petite cuts, cropped tees, or shorter, boxier styles?

(I’ve thought about something like Wool& dresses, but my legs rarely see the light of day and I usually get swallowed up by longer dresses. Buying dresses would require leggings for under the dresses, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of keeping a smaller wardrobe.). I’m in the U.S. but will buy anywhere that will ship to me. Thank you!

Questions on 3 weeks of travel: Prague > Vienna > Budapest > Zagreb > Rome

Hey all! I’m heading on an international trip after graduating college. Spending time in the countries in the title. I have a few questions that I wanted to ask. I mostly wore athlete in college and now that I’m out I actually want to start dressing nicer, and I figure this trip could be a great launchpad to get some pieces for me going forward! My goal is to fit about 4 bottoms and tops each and be able to mix and match them - doing laundry about once a week if I can.

  1. Bodysuits. I’m not sure if there’s a better sub for this, but I’m 5’11” 😵‍💫 and have had a lot of trouble finding ones that fit me. My torso is pretty long. But a lot of them are so cute, and it would be nice to not have to worry about keeping my top tucked in. Does anyone have any recommendations for where I could find some for longer torsos?

  2. My goal on this trip actually is to wear only skirts (outside what I wear traveling to and from Europe). I know that Europeans generally dress a bit nicer, and that I’ll be visiting a lot of cathedrals and religious sites, and they might require women to wear skirts. Is this realistic? And if so - does anyone have any recommendations for knee length - maxi length that also are still good for a lot of walking? :)

Also, I was thinking about wearing nude pantyhose while I’m there on some days to avoid having to shave my legs all the time; I heard that a lot of women there wear tights, even in the summer. I don’t mind the weather necessarily, growing up in the south I know I’ll be ok lol

Appreciate the help, and any other tips are welcome :)

Travel hair straightener?

Heading to Europe later this month and trying to only pack carryon, so need to be conscious of size and weight. I have a very small dual voltage straightener but with my long, moderately thick, wavy hair, it takes forever. It doesn't need to be perfectly pin straight. I just want to look tidied. Does anyone have any recs?

Hi all just wondering what your top tips would be for packing for this combo. We won’t be doing any massive hikes in Yosemite . LA usual mix days at Universal/sightseeing and hopefully evening some bars. San Francisco similar.

so I’m thinking-

One pair new balance One pair white Stan smiths I can wear with dresses Crocs or something for beach/pool? Birks?

One black jumpsuit I can wear in the evening Two lightweight dresses

One pair jeans One pair wide leg back trousers One pair tracksuit bottoms for relaxing Two pairs shorts

One lightweight shacket One pac-a-mac type rain jacket

One cardigan One sweatshirt for relaxing

Four t shirts A couple other tops - not sure what yet-suggestions welcome!

Cami/shorts night set Lightweight robe Swimsuit Hammam towel One scarf for the plane

-obviously toiletries, tech and chargers etc too.

What am I missing clothes wise?

Help! I’m in paralysis analysis and my trip is in ~12 hours

Been lurking here for awhile and this is one of my fave subs!! I was always an overpacker but now I’m traveling with my infant. I’m flying solo with my baby and meeting up with my spouse in Santorini for a wedding for 5 days. As it’s for a wedding I want to do carry on only so my bag doesn’t get lost. I got a Cotopaxi Alpa 28 L and I’ve packed it with my stuff but I’m not finished. I stopped because I can’t fit my babies stuff in it. I’m thinking I’ll put her diapers in my gate check stroller bag. I read here about the 3x3 sudoku method for planning outfits. I like looking cute on vacation and I have this anxiety that I won’t have enough clothes. I’m taking 3 pairs of shoes which seems like a lot: white tennis shoes, crocs (I like wearing these in the hotel showers and also find them comfy for walking) and a dressy pair of sandals. I’ve decanted everything into small bottles. My own stuff barely fits in my backpack. I rolled my clothes into various ziploc bags based on each day in Santorini. Any tips or success stories? I have ADHD and I realize I am procrastinating on this packing because I know how much work is still ahead and I don’t love my outfit choices so I’m worried!

Sandal recommendation for Portugal

Any recommendations for sandals for Portugal in July . Thinking of going one bag under the seat infront of me. Thinking or trainers or white Ecco shoes for day to day walking. I wear a lot of dresses so has to go with everything.

But for sandals I’m not sure. I’ve heard Birkenstocks might not have great grip on the cobbled streets. I’d mainly wear sandals to the beach or to evening meal. I’ll probably live in my trainers most other times but I can usually wear my Birkenstocks for a whole day no problem.

Farpoint 55 vs Fairview 55

Hello, I’m looking to get either the Osprey FP 55L or FV 55L (newest version) for 3-4 months around Central America. I’m 5’5, 118 lbs, flat-chested, no hips, probably average torso length. Built like a juul. lol.

I was leaning towards the Farpoint but then since I’m rather small, figured I should go with the Fairview? The smaller straps on the FV worry me that they wouldn’t be as supportive as the wider straps of the FP. Given my flat chest and no hips, I figure the curve of the FV straps and curve of the hip belt wouldn’t matter to me. But since I’m small, I’m worried the larger straps of the FP would stick out too much and hit my shoulders uncomfortably.

Anyone out there with a similar build have any recommendations? Am I too small for the FP? I can’t make it to a store to try it on. Thank you so much.

Has anyone used a VacPack?

I got an Instagram ad from a company called VacPack. They make a backpack with a space bag built in. It seems cool (even though I could just space bag all of my clothes without having to buy their bag, which I have done before).

Does anyone here have one or has anyone heard of this company before? Their website seems very simple, almost too simple. Only one color way for the product, the site looks like other one product sites I’ve seen before, and there’s a deep “discount” on the product.

Conditioner Bar as Leave In

Has anyone found a conditioner bar to use as leave in conditioner? I just need something to swipe on wet hair from my neck down to get all the tangles out. I used to use the Ethique Wonderbar, but my last couple of bars leave more of a waxy feeling on my hair when it dries.

Anyone tried it? Thanks.

Ryan Air personal item — how much do exact dimensions matter if it can squish?

Hello experts 😊

I am going to be one bagging through Europe this summer. I am flying Ryan from Dublin to Brussels and right now I'm planning on just having one small duffel bag. If the bag is full, it's dimensions would be larger than the Ryanair sizes, but I don't think it will be that full.

My question is, do they measure by using a metal container that I could squish my bag into? My recollection is that they do weigh the carry-on bags, so I'll be sure to be under 9 pounds.

Any other tips appreciated :-)

Help me find my unicorn backpack?

I’m looking for a personal item backpack (I know…it’s not very one bag of me haha) and I’m having the hardest time finding something. I’m looking for:

  • 20-30ish liters. Bigger is fine as I’m not worried about size as I can not fill it and squish it to fit
  • neutral color
  • luggage trolley sleeve that keeps the bag upright, not sideways.
  • sleek/minimalist or “fashionable” (for lack of better word). I just don’t want it to scream “I am going hiking!”

And the biggest thing, good organization. Ideally, it would have 2 compartments OR 1 compartment with an additional huge pocket (laptop sleeve doesn’t count as a compartment). The bag may hold some overflow from my carryon or souvenirs. I don’t want it to be one giant black hole where all my crap is lumped together. Ideally, the stuff I don’t need would be sectioned away but I’d have easy access to in flight essentials: book, tablet, noise canceling headphone case, pouch with lotion, chapstick, etc. Other internal pockets/organization would be a plus.

The closest thing I’ve found so far is the Tortuga laptop backpack. Any others that you can think of that would meet my needs?

Chaco Sandals Review

I am currently on the hunt for the “one sandal” and I’ve checked out Teva‘s, Chaco‘s, and a couple other brands. With the style I’m looking for Chaco‘s seem to check the boxes. Although I can’t find a retailer that sells the style in store, so I can’t try them on. I am a women’s 8 in sneakers, but I can also be a 7 1/2 in heels and some flip-flops I own- so I’m not sure if I should size down to a 7? My foots not super wide for context. I’m wondering if anyone has reviews on ordering online from them, the fit, sizing, or comfortability? I was looking at the Women’s Z/2 Adjustable Strap Classic Sandal specifically.

I bought some hibar regular size bars. What do you store them in while traveling? They are kinda big. Bag? Container?

One bagging to London/France in June with Toddler

Hi!

We're packing a 26" Travelpro suitcase to share for 3 people. I'll need to squeeze in toddler and husband too. Toddler will need a few more duplicates of things as he occasionally has an accident. We have laundry at a few stops!

London (laundry)-->Lyon (laundry)-->Beaune (TBD Laundry)-->Paris (No laundry)

Thoughts? I've done Japan for 2 1/2 weeks in October with a single carry on for myself. We'll be gone for 17 days, with laundry in a few stops.

Me:
1 Jean

1 Short (Linen or Denim)

1 black Linen/Cotton Pant

1 Black Linen Jumpsuit

1 Dress

1 Jogger pants (plane outfit)

1 long sleeve Matching Shirt for Jogger (plane outfit)

1 Bike Short

PJ Shorts & Shirt

5 x Shirts (Combo of Ts, collared shirt, linen tanks)

3x Socks

6x Underwear

Shoes:

Sneakers

Vionic Sandals

Tevas (My birkenstocks are at the end of their life--tbd on buying a new pair before the trip, and I like having an ankle strap/water option with a small kid. They are tan, and pretty inoffensive.)

Toddler: Not opposed to just buying him new clothing if needed. Some of this clothing will need to be in our carry on backpack for emergencies!

5x Shirts

4x Shorts

2x Pants

7x Underwear

4x Socks

3x Jammies (Wear one on plane)

1x water all purpose light weight shoe, 1 x sneaker, crocs.

4 days in NOLA - 4 days in Michigan (+2 travel days) - Tentative packing list & questions

I'm heading to New Orleans (from Canada) for a 3-day academic conference, followed by 4 days with family in Michigan. The forecast is looking pretty hot in both locations. I want to feel comfortable and look decent at the conference and walking around New Orleans. Michigan will be more active and casual--going on some trail runs and hanging out with my niblings!

Here's what I'm thinking of packing for clothes:

Dresses (won't wear a bra with either of them)

  • Little black dress (for conference banquet and possible "grownup outing" in Michigan
  • Sleeveless black/grey athleisure dress (a bit more casual, works for conference and just hanging out)

Bottoms

  • Green cargo pants (my favourite for travelling--big pockets that can fit a passport)
  • Blue/green "Jasmine" pants (very similar to these pants, can wear at the conference with black top and cardigan, and also for just hanging out)
  • Black capris (for running/working out)
  • Burgundy shorts x 2 (one pair strictly for sleeping, the other for hanging out)

Tops

  • Black tee
  • Black sleeveless top
  • Teal workout tee
  • Pink tank top
  • Camisole (for sleeping)

Outerwear

  • Long black open cardigan (for conference--anticipating overly air-conditioned hotel ballrooms)
  • Light coral zip-up hoody (for travelling and any other time it feels chilly)

Miscellaneous

  • 10 pairs undies
  • Black underwire bra
  • Black sports bra (x 2?)
  • One-piece swimsuit (I'm a serious swimmer, so I generally pack a training suit wherever I go)

Shoes (I don't think I can do less than 3 pairs!)

  • Black sneakers (will definitely be doing some running/hiking in Michigan; can wear while travelling to save room in backpack)
  • Strappy yellow sandals (for the conference--fairly comfortable, but not worn in enough for long walks)
  • Comfy sandals (to wear whenever I'm not at the conference or out running)

Maybes???

  • This tropical romper. It's light and breezy in hot weather, and my partner loves it on me. It was perfect for Hawaii, but I'm not sure if it's right for New Orleans, since there will be less of a beach vibe there. Also, it's pretty open/low-cut, so I only wear it over my bikini top.
  • Bikini. If we go to a beach, it would be in Michigan, and I probably wouldn't even swim, since I hate cold water.

So...any thoughts? How many bras do you usually pack for 10 days? I'm not sure if I should bring one or two sports bras.

Walking shoes for SE Asia

Looking for suggestions for walking shoes, I will be traveling around SE Asia for 3 months this winter. I'd like to find something that won't look too horrible with the casual day dresses I like to wear. Comfort first though, I'm not much of a fashionista. Appreciate any ideas!

Help with UK to US voltage

Hello! I’m travelling to the US soon for two weeks and I would like to take my Revlon blow dryer brush with me. I bought it in the UK and I checked, it has a 220-240V. Will I just need an adapter or is this a converter situation?

If its easier to buy a travel size universal hair tool, please let me know. I ideally dont want to buy a blowdryer for this but if you can also recommend some universal ones, you’d be doing me a huge favour. Thank you!

How do you DRY your laundry?

Did the dry-bag wash method two days ago. Laundry is finally dry after hanging in two subsequent hotel rooms. Socks need to be rewashed as they smell. I'm in Spain, it's dry, had the AC on, didn't put anything in closet, hung it with space for air flow. How do you get things dry before they smell?
