Ottawa ramps up pandemic-readiness
Already dropped a mere $200 on supplies in prep. TP, dried foods, shelf stable stuff, cans of beans etc…
It’s not like I can’t use that stuff if there’s never another outbreak!
PPE will be much harder to get and much more in demand for the essential workers
N95s and face shields are as cheap as they’ve been since 2019 and the market is over saturated with counterfeit masks like it was for a while
Just saying
Good call! Luckily I have a few boxes left from the wild fire season last summer :)
Have a bad feeling we’re all going to wish we had more come this time next year
Yep, 3M Auras were going for 20$ a mask at peak pandemic, if you could find them. Now they are 1.50$ Canadian where I am.
Me too. I felt crazy for stocking up at first, but I’ve been seeing too many articles about this virus lately to risk not having supplies.
Check out the company “Who Gives A Crap” they make toilet paper out of recycled paper products. They also donate a bunch of their profits to help people in undeveloped nations. They also didn’t run short during the pandemic
It’s also plastic free, which is an added bonus.
Haha yes that too. I have been trying to get rid of all plastics in my life so totally spaced on that part since I switched to their product so long ago.
Will do, thanks!
They don’t send cash. They use the money to help build toilets and waste infrastructure through specific NGOs. Which reduces poverty and disease which reduces mortality and allows for increased time in education which reduces birth rate.
“I think people were surprised that ‘trust us’ didn’t work,” Dr. Lee said. “Coming out of the pandemic, we’re in a very different place.”
I want to point out that they had no reason to be surprised. This was not the first pandemic. They just disregarded history. Take a look at this great document from 2005:
"It is worth noting that this terror, at least in paralyzing form, did not seem to materialize in the few places where authorities told the truth. One lesson is clear from this experience: In handling any crisis, it is absolutely crucial to retain credibility. Giving false reassurance is the worst thing one can do. If I may speculate, let me suggest that almost as bad as outright lying is holding information so closely that people think officials know more than they say."

Also there are vaccine contracts with GSK and CSL:
"This was followed by a renewed agreement, in June, for supply of pandemic influenza vaccines to the World Health Organization (WHO), and in July a contract with the Government of Canada for both seasonal and pandemic influenza vaccines."

"Seqirus, a world leader in influenza vaccines and pandemic response, announced today that following Health Canada’s approval of FOCLIVIA® (adjuvanted, egg-based A strain H5N1 pandemic influenza vaccine), the Company is ready to fulfil its role in Canada’s influenza pandemic preparedness plans. Seqirus Canada is an influenza pandemic vaccine partner to the Canadian Government through the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). The contract requires Seqirus to be on standby to rapidly manufacture and deliver a large number of vaccine doses to help protect Canadians against the influenza strain identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) when an influenza pandemic is declared."

So how do egg-based vaccines get mass produced when most eggs will contain the virus?
Not a scientist and hoping someone who’s part of the vaccine development has asked this baseline question…
Eggs won't contain the virus since it kills birds extremely rapidly, sometimes within a couple hours. It takes over 24 hours for an egg to pass through the tract, if the bird gets sick then its laying process pauses.
Ah, thank you. That’s excellent to understand in more detail.
