Personally I wouldn't drive in Athens for longer than I need to. Place is a mad house. If you plan on staying in Athens, taxis, public transit and walking are your best bet and the cheapest option. It's a VERY walkable city.
If you plan on leaving Athens what I would do is set up a reservation at the Sixt location at Syngrou Avenue for the day you want to leave, and then drop it off at the airport when you're leaving Greece. That location is 10 minutes from the edge of Athens, so you'll have minimal mad house driving (the rest of Greece is fine to drive in) and then the Airport on the way back is attached to the highway so you don't even have to go through Athens to get there.
As for how you get to Athens from the airport, I suggest pre-booking a taxi so they're waiting for you when you land and that way the price is fixed. There are also trains and buses that go to the airport and back, though I can't vouch for them as I haven't ridden them.
thx i’m not planning on driving in Athens, mainly in the Peloponnese. Just want the convenience of jumping in a car at the airport and going.
