Not sure if good for gaming but still cool
MetaSeems more of a gimmick at this point. When it has the same color contrast as the normal display panels then we can talk
Even if it performed the same, I still don't see the point in it.
To watch porn with your friends in public duh
Gotta do it in school in the middle of class
Maybe as a standalone screen (when the technology matures) mounted to a wall it would be cool? You could put art behind it that disappears when the screen comes on!
if anything I guess this adds more possibilities to what we can do with displays, imagine if the display breaks you can just hot swap a 10buck piece of glass and continue playing.
*hypothetically*
I don't think 10 buck pieces of glass come with LED screens within them. If your screen breaks you're looking at a very expensive repair.
More glass to break?
= more repairs to be made = more money
Exactly. This solves nothing.
Yes I also was like how is that better?
I'm not sure if this is a joke or you're actually serious.
What did the person say
I'm pretty sure they're trying to remove the bezels, but that's actually pretty stupid 😂😂
Maybe touchscreen when it’s closed
So cool that you share all that you're watching to others, I mean the most wet dreams type of videos that you'll share with everyone/s XD
I would like to watch a movie with someone, but one of us wants the picture mirrored side by side...
AR/VR/MR
its solves there low income in repair
It'd be cool if it was implemented into a car's windshield for real world GPS displays so Google maps doesn't keep screwing me over when I'm taking highway exits
It's so you can see the blank wall behind your desk...clever but worthless
In laptop i think no one, maybe for something like smart glasses or VR visors that use mixed reality
Now everyone can see what I am looking at from the other side. Now people can’t watch porn at Starbucks!
No, they still can, it’s just that now everyone else has to, too
Yeah never understood transparent personal devices.
Watch them 'invent' a backplate for this to have more privacy.. starting at 299$
Pretty sure it will only cost at most 20$ they ain't Apple
Its a joke, why have a backplate when you can then just buy a normal laptop.
Why would I want something like that? You know how breakable it would be? (Still cool though)
AR/VR
its not a 3d display, so what would the point be to
I'm not talking about the laptop. I'm talking about the display technology , it can be used in AR/VR/MR glasses. apple Vision pro needs an M2 processor and a lot of processing just to get good, not perfect pass through. 2 of these (obviously miniaturised )with an electrochromic layer behind it would solve it with 0 processing.
yes and no. actually yes. no? yes.
Pointless tech.
AR/VR
Can be achieved by placing a camera behind the laptop screen and making it display the background. The transparent laptop makes the color scheme shit and black are practically not gonna exist

Transparent display were already a thing this post was about a laptop with this tech. This tech will need to improve a lot to meet the standard nobody would watch on a completely watered down colors vr. Appealing to a very niche community .
this post was about a laptop with this tech
I replied to the guy that said "pointless tech" with a real possible application of the display. You've wrongly assumed I'm talking about the laptop.
Transparent display were already a thing
I know, this is a showcase more of the display technology rather than the laptop itself

I never said it's ready now. it CAN have real applications in AR and mixed reality applications. Look at all the new applications of the apple vision pro. I have a xreal air 2 and would gladly use transparent OLEDs with passive passthrough over the active shit it has now.(Provided the electro chromatic layer is still included when you need the colour and contrast)
Appealing to a very niche community . The whole VR scene was very niche just a few years ago , now it's a multi billion dollar industry.
someone’s angry 😭
yes and no. actually yes. no? yes.
how? it isn’t a 3d display

"Lenovo are now offering a $4.99 p/m subscription to a privacy screen on the back of the monitor"
🤣
There it is, the reason why the tech was developed
Gotta wash my hand every 5min xD fucking fingerprint lol
Instant shatter before you even take it out of the box. Them warehouse boys do be throwing your shit when you're not watching. Handling packages properly takes time and time is money.
What if...you add aluminium to the back....
You genius. We could even color the inside black to boost contrast.
Jokes aside, why would I want everyone to be able to see what I am dping on my laptop? I'm not talking about porn, this just looks as a privacy concearn for me.
It's cool, but it'll never take off. Businesses Don't want it cause if you take that on a trip or to a coffee shop or meeting everyone can see your screen, data protection nightmare that doesn't even require shoulder surfing. Gamers don't want it cause the contrast ratio is going to be ass. Students don't want it cause it'll be expensive and also too bright in dark dorms. Maybe retired people want it cause it looks cool.
Wonder if the lights reflecting off the wall or curtain behind the laptop will help with the eyes?
I have a Philips Momentum NanoIOS monitor with adaptive lights on the rear that really helps counter the eye strain with the display system (or I just got used to it naturally). Model: 275M1RZPRO 2k 170mz
Good luck watching porn in a public place on a device like this.
Definitely a pass, useless tech.
not that you can buy it anyway, but imagine ar glasses with that screen
I’m still trying to figure out what the use case is, probably just PR. I see no real use case for an average customer here.
Perfect for schools to make sure students aren't doing smth else on their laptops during lessons🤣
Why would i want to show the whole world what im doing? What if i go to a cafe to work on my computer and then everyone sees my work including emails being written and sent and any sensitive topics that i might need to research for work. This is the pinnacle of useless gimmick technology
Congratulations! You just removed privacy!
AH HEEELL NO!
A transparent glass keyboard with haptic feedback would be interesting.
It seems to have a sort of glass touchpad keyboard thing going on..
I understand a TV being transparent if ur a rich fuck that wants a window between 2 rooms normally but also be able to watch TV in both rooms but other than that it's dumb
I can think of 3 use cases for such displays (not necessarily for laptop)
1) For future ar glasses
2) For exterior glass walls in cafes and other buildings to advertise their menus and offer, while letting people look at the interior of the building.
3) Reduce the weight of the product maybe.
People saying this is useless just lack imagination. Imagine the future where instead of wearing something like the apple vision pro headset you can just wear what seemingly looks like normal spectacles but is actually a screen like in the above post. At that point it'll truly be AR and won't require multiple outward facing cameras like the vision pro does.
have you tried meta glasses yet by Ray Ban.. they do this
I can definitely see this on windshields.
Would have been cool if it was glasses it's not it's a laptop and it's useless
This isn't for sale. This is literally just to show that it can eventually be applied to things like glasses.
Unfortunately too many people think that just because THEY can't find a use for something, NO ONE else can.
Why don't you do that with anything else tho why does it have to be this laptop specifically
Because it's easier to do it with a laptop? They aren't mass producing this. It's just a proof of concept. It'll be mass produced when it actually solves an issue. Just because it's first used in a laptop doesn't mean that's the only place they'll use it.
Ah I understand what you mean now I thought you meant that this laptop could be paired with ar glasses apologies
Damn you can see the display flickering already 💀
"Gamers" my ass, come on people. I mean let's use our imagination? It's a step closer to making nits useless.
Displaying elements on a transparent screen could mean using the ambient light as your backlight source. Meaning if you're using the laptop outside in direct sunlight, your backlight is the sunlight.
So if you're using the laptop at night, then it works just like the video. But if you're using the laptop in broad daylight, the monitor is practically "off", there's no need to ramp up the brightness, and you'd be gaining a few hours of battery on top of that.
Something like this exists already, just Google "Eazeye monitor" which uses the ambient light. In its early stages, but still. Imagine e-ink clarity under sunlight, except it's an LCD screen. This right here is a huge step in that direction
I would still want physical keyboard. Touch keyboards not great.
Iron man did it in 2008
But why?
It Will make notebooks more expensive and what do you get from It? I did not understand
It looks cool but it's just another gimmick someone can sell for way too much money. Also it's probably really easy to break.
Downgrade I had say.
This is annoyingly pointless. Did they not get the memo about wearable displays?
Prepare for a lot of shattered glass and insane screen replacement costs.
Screen replacement will be 1000 sir....
We got this instead of cures for cancer smh
but why
This tech could be useful to windows / store fronts. Not sure exactly how it’s useful for personal devices.
Cool, but totally pointless in laptop
Why
It's useless, it only creates more problems. It's only cool to look at
I believe people what to have such screen for the same reason they other want rgb lights on their laptop
Gotta love the permanent scratches on the screen if you accidentally scratch the back
What problem does this solve..........?
Pretty cool but I'm not taking that thing out of my house.
Here comes the $120 privacy cover
There is no benefit for transparent laptops. Only transparent wearables might have a feasible future tbh
imagine how bright the backlight has to be to make it functional. especially if any background surface is white.
what a dumb idea....
But the keyboard thought!?!
Unless it's cheap top quality oled like 120hz + it is useless and just for showing off . Displays don't need transparacey unless it's a window
no thank you, i need no glass screen
Kinda related, but privacy will be none existent.
in which scenario would this be useful
Cool. And pointless. But really f**** cool.
Contrast is going to be a huge problem... Why not give it an E-ink backing that can instantly turn black and stay that way without using power?
Can't really see the benefits
This is great until they implement it on desktop monitors and you're left staring at cables when they're powered off
Literally why?
nah fuck it. it will get scratched like shit
I'm still wishing for the LG rolling phone. That thing seemed badass.
Now people can stare at your drooling face while you have no idea they're standing there. Fun!
I think it looks ugly
Cant wwtch p*rn anymore 🤣🤣🤣
i love the concept of a bendable screen laptop they had with one of their projects
this one? hardpass no questions asked. i will think about it if it was a tablet though, we are still not there yet for transparent components. lmao
but why though
looks likke shit
Saw a phone designed with similar gimmick
So, everyone can see what you watching?
Would be cool if these displays could overlay on real life stuff behind it, like AR
Ah, finally: the answer to the question no one asked.
It’s a gimmick.
If your back panel is transparent then any strong light source from behind the laptop can interfere with colors on the screen
Unless this is cheaper than a normal screen, it serves no function whatsoever. I'd bet it breaks more easily.
Getting closer to a holo-display…
Looks cool, but I don't like it
For laptops idk. But for TVs, to replace the giant black mirror could work
Gimmick just like their overpriced and useless built-in water cooling for the legion i9
All new Lenovo Transparent! Now watch your favorite porn with the whole airport. All new from Lenovo. Pre-Order Today.
And the screen is flickering
Do you love privacy? Me neither!
It might be pointless af in our daily lifes but investment in pointless rech leads to us seeing changes in tech we use that's actually good.
But what's the point of this? 🤔
I don’t mind the transparent display, it’s the touch keyboard which will be annoying.
What this solves? Will it be cheaper to produce, and so, cheaper to buy?
Imagine watching porn on it
I’m sure it will be even less popular then the transparent TVs
How am I going to conduct my uh “research” in public??
That will be a shit quality display
So they can see me what I do on monitor.
Its cool, but not really sure what problem this solves.
