Yes. This is an actual niche technique for “surf fishing.” Sort of. I just don’t think it had a name…
There are several jurisdictions (e.g. Delaware) where you can only drive on the beach by special permit. These permits are highly-sought and in limited supply. They are for fishermen to access the coast right? You’re supposed to use them to fish.
So…if you and your boys want to just go drive up the beach and hang out, you apply for one of these and score it, but you still gotta set up your rods and “fish”.
Thus, “dead hooking,” as we can now call it, was born. Park your jeep, crack a beer, and throw that empty hook out past the second breaker. When you’re done partying, reel up that line and go home. You just won’t have to deal with any actual fish.
Saw this strategy in action a couple of times. It is 100% effective at catching no fish.
same in hawaii, you are allowed to camp on the beach if you are fishing so i bought a $40 dollar complete set up and a big fat sinker and casted it out and set it next to my tent for 2 weeks on the north shore of oahu, i saved sooooo much money
Like others said a worm on a small hook and bobber, maybe a piece of bread/cheese mashed around the hook. Looks like the largest thing you’d catch out of here is a small sunny or some species of minnow. If you fly fish might be worth it to toss in a tiny fly and micro fish for minnows.
Ok well that leads me to ask, what does the depth look like? If it’s more than 4 feet, I would try a Texas rigged, weightless, senko to avoid the grass try a variety of colors. You could also rig a weedless whacky rig also in a variety of colors.
If there is frog life or it’s shallow, I would try a few small frog patterns of different colors and fish them very slow at the edges of the pond and around the weeds, they should be able to push through the stuff on top. I would use the frogs in the morning or evening when they’re more likely to be moving around.
Again a hook and line would work quite well here if you just let a big night crawler sit in the middle on a bobber, they will come investigate.
There a lot of similar sized ponds in my area up in the hills to water the deer (or old feeders to long lost hand dug wells) and I hear smaller hooks, worms, and heavy test line (with maybe a bobber) on a cane pole just dropping shots in works in these little ponds bc you just reach in with your long pole and drop and bob your line
Quick question, my guy or gal. At night, when the frogs are loudest, would a frog play a bigger role, or because it's night, would it not make much difference? Asking for fishing off the bank where catfish tend to come closer to the bank. Other fish are also there, but I tried a Texas rig at night with no bites. I'm also a beginner fisher.
Weedless top water. Along the banks then a little deeper.
Then a punching rig. With the punching rig I’d target changes in submerged vegetation.
If it were bigger I would use my deeper pro+
Keep in mind, that bottom topography closely mimics above surface topography. So the left side is steeper while the right side is shallower. It’s why there are vegetation mats on the night but not on the left side.
Also see how the ground on the right is flatish, while the left side is steep. There’s going to be at least one good sized fish in there.
If you have them a crawfish on the left side. Especially if it’s rocky. Or a jig/pig or a light punch rig.
ask for fishing spots in Reddit for your state and also the app Fishbrain pro can show you some spots. This area seems to be marsh and I’m not sure if anything is in there. You could buy those fishing sonic casters and it will tell you if anything is moving and the depth of the pond/lake
White grub with an eagle claw snell #2 and a snap swivel with an interlock snap. Easy to change out if that color doesn’t work and also switch back to. Could also try black or chartreuse grubs. Probably won’t get anything big but anything in there is probably hungry.
Trout magnet trout magnet trout magnet! I've caught everything from bait fish, to bass, catfish, and everything in between. Even carp. Micro jigs are truly a wild card. And if I break off, I start throwing normal size stuff on heavier line. One time I caught a nice bass out of a 1x1 hole. They work real well in pressured spots too so don't tell a billion people.
Nah there’s water behind the veg, that’s a honey hole for sure. Guaranteed 4-5lber sitting somewhere in there. Throw a frog right at dusk and wait for an explosion homie ✊🏼
Lol the biggest blue gill I've ever seen came out of a pond this small on a freaking whopper plopper. Was around 2 lbs and it had a huge hump on its forehead and was thiiick
My cousin had a pond like this on his property that used to be much bigger. Not sure what happened to it. But it was alot deeper than it looked and FILLED to the brim with sunfish. Soon as your line touched the water youd pull one out.
