Out of curiosity, how big do chubs get? I never caught one over six inches. I might want to stock the creek on my hunting property with these things. The creek doesn’t hold trout to well thanks to the Amish neighbors.
As they said, if they aren’t there DONT introduce them. Unless it’s a pond. As for size, I’ve seen some 3 inches, and the biggest I’ve ever seen was last Friday when we went on the boat. Buddy caught a nearly 13 inch chub.
I caught this in a small retention pond full of tiny pumpkinseed. It's the only one I caught, despite catching about 20 pumpkinseed. Any ID help appreciated!
A few years ago I was fishing a creek using one of those tiny salmon egg hooks with a little bit of rolled up bread for bait. (A little pinch weight to be able to throw it.) I found a hole full of chub and they would literally hit it everytime the hook hit the water. I must have caught 20 then they stopped biting, I think I had caught every fish in that hole at least once.
If it fought like a pile of wet leaves = creek chub. If it fought like a pissed off brownie = fall fish. Imo fallfish are super underappreciated as a game fish. I think of them as the poor man's trout.
creek chub for sure. dorsal spot is in the right place, and you can see their little moustache (dark bar on upper lip). The lateral line markings usually disappear on any cyprinid when they're in turbid murky water, fish are pretty good at changing colour. The males get these big ol' heads
We call them “love chubs” cause when you trout fishing with some guy who is slaying and you finally get a bite, look over condescendingly like I got a fish too, You got some love Unfortunately A love chub
Google on the difference between Fallfish and Creek Chub:
"They're different species of minnows. Generally, Fallfish are bigger and have a more scaly, shiny, almost metallic silver appearance. Creek Chubs don't grow as large and have a dark stripe down their sides."
Absolute monster of a creek chub
