I have fallen in love with the throwing blades and I don't get why people dislike them

I've been seeing that a ton of people have been hating on the Smithscript Daggers for their low damage and "short" range, but I'm here to tell you that it's actually a really fun weapon.

Firstly the range is pretty dang good with the shortest throw being about the same distance as a charged R2 from a whip. This is the shortest attack that is on the daggers and it has an amazing jumping R2 and great AoWs.

Secondly, the damage isn't supposed to be the most insane damage ever. It's a dagger. And even considering that it's a dagger it has absolutely absurd damage potential that people are completely ignoring. Each blade that hits a target builds up a rapid attack talisman or the tear and it allows for very fast and crazy damage for very little time. It takes about 3 throws to be in the several thousands with just the rotten wing talisman and they come out very quickly allowing you to deal damage and then move and deal more.

It takes a second to get used to but they genuinely have become my favorite weapon in the game after about an hour of getting used to. It's is such a good combo weapon and everyone is just ignoring that fact to say that it has poor damage, if you hit an enemy once with a dagger it's also going to be "bad" damage. People think that it is supposed to hit like a great sword but it is LITERALLY A KNIFE.

I'm running them on my right hand as a backup to my main weapon in a NG+ "random bullshit go build" and yeah they're good fun, especially as an opener or to clear out trash mobs. I find the R2 misses constantly though, which is weird. Like it'll fly right past them, doesn't seem to have good/ any tracking.

The build also has the new perfumer pots equipped, the Backhand Blades, and the Black Knife, for all sorts of shenanigans. It's good fun.

Yeah same with the curved swords that have the R2 throw. It'll miss from like 3 feet away...

I also noticed that the R2 is not the best at hitting things. I don't think I ever really used it sadly cause of its poor range and weird throwing

I'm thinking these daggers in off hand, light greatsword in main. With bottles as a backup, full dex build.

Personally I have cold infusion cuz my arcane is bad, but at 60 dex, 20 Str/int/fth I get 1000 damage with the rotten curved sword talisman with 2 r1 s

I used just a keen infusion since it scales with Dex at an S scaling and I was already speced into a Dex build

I haven’t used the daggers, but I just agree with the sentiment of trying things out yourself. I’ve seen so many people with louder and broader voices instantly decry things and the general consensus has formed very quickly. People really should be trying things out themselves for their own builds and play styles.

Personally, I prefer the Claw of Night since it both functions as a claw and a throwing knife with its fan of knives ash of war and throwing knife charge attack.

Oh dang I missed that those had a throwing R2 that's neat. Wish they had the beast claw moveset though

I'm using them for my NG+7 playthrough right now, and they're absolutely peak. They feel super strong but not OP and definitely extremely fun. I might go as far as to say it's my 2nd favourite weapon in the whole entire game after the Backhand Blade.

Do the ranged attacks of the claw of night also build up the bleed damage as much as the melee attacks or is it less? And is scattershot throw better on the claws cause it looks like it throws all the blades at once

Indeed they do, perhaps even build up more blood. Scattershot is better if close to the target as it hits like a shotgun. If you aren’t right next to the target then you’re better using the simple charged attack.

My main complaint with these daggers is unfortunately the range. Most DLC enemies have long-reaching attacks and high-mobility combos, so being so close with throwing knives means youre always out of stamina from dodging, throwing, etc.

For reference, i'm using them on my rl250 build with 80 dex/str, keen infused. I also have 50 endurance and the twin-headed turtle talisman, so my stamina isn't the "issue".

You are correct in saying that it stacks the RWSI and Millicent's prosthesis extremely quickly. They do good damage, nice animations. R2 is wacky because of the throw, but it hits large targets regularly.

25% increase in effective range would make them infinitely better while still keeping their niche of having less range than bows and the regular consumable throwing knives (they DO have more range than the smithscript daggers)

Also, it's kinda ridiculous that i can throw a greathammer further than a couple of silly little knives. I think that saying they don't have a range issue is objectievly wrong.

The stamina consumption was definitely the biggest issue I had when using them. It uses lots of stamina and it makes the green turtle buff almost necessary. If they buff the weapon I think that this would probably be the most important thing to actually buff.

I do agree that a buff to the range would certainly help the daggers out a ton. They are a little shorter than I like but they do still feel like a comfortable distance for a medium range weapon. It would make it feel a little easier to deal the massive reach of enemies but I still feel that the range is not

And I also find it a little silly that you can throw a great hammer about twice as far a knife too. The charged attack I can see having such a great range but it's kinda upsetting that it's the basic throw and running throw too

I agree that the stamina issue is def a priority fix. at least the stamina consumption should be reduced while 2-handing them

They're one of my favorite additions! My first build in the dlc was throwing daggers in one hand and back hand blade in the other. They're great if you are constantly building status effects, or if you just need to take a step back and let the bad guy swing his sword while I turn them into a porcupine

My buddy has been using the throwing knives since he found them and is absolutely loving it. It’s not the best weapon in the game by any means but it holds its own very well. Paired with the scattershot throw ash of war makes this weapon really shine.

I love the throwing blades!! i run them in my off hand with dryleaf arts in my right hand. little blood infusion to give them a little bleed build up, and they’re great for opening fights or picking off low health enemies that you don’t wanna risk getting close to again. they’re totally valid and so much fun.

Which talisman are you running on them? I enjoyed then early on but dropped them because the damage wasnt there and poise etc it was fun but also made my playthrough hard.

Though now that I've gotten most the talisman I might give it another try on a De x, arc build

I used the rotten wing sword insignia, the dragon crest great shield, two-headed turtle talisman, and the last one got changed between alaxnder's shard, claw talisman, smithing talisman, or a defense talisman

The smithing talisman is the throwing talisman, and I was using the scattershot throw for the majority of my play through. I used piercing throw on a couple of bosses but that was it

Yeah starting from new (NG not fresh) i can run up to farum in about 2 hours from start (godskin duo has final smithing stone bell). It’s still a lengthy process but 100% worth doing before the dlc. So much fun trying new stuff.

Yeah Google for full list but You keep almost everything basically except for keys, quest items, medallions and graces.

Heard ppl say you keep dlc upgrade levels aswell

Ahhh yeah if you started NG+ during the launch season then it didn’t carry over. It was added in a later patch, I wanna say like 3 months after release.

Amazing, but what if i'm a little quirky and get 2 copies of it, one with cold infusion, other with fire infusion so i can do the funny frost/fire build that might or might not be viable

I get that 2h it is having it in 2 hands, but what if i have 2 copies with different properties and also 1 in each hand?

You’d have to go into NG+ and try it, there’s only one per run. It’s just a paired weapon so I’d assume it would use the 2-hand moveset while power stancing. You’d lose the ability to block though.

Sigh. It's not hating. They're all fun I prefer the spear. But they could stand for a DPS buff to make them more viable.

I agree for PVE. For PVP it's great. Also I wish they'd smooth over the damage falloff a bit.

Btw the spear is bugged. I mentioned it in my other comment.

I havent had the chance to use the spear yet, do you have any tips on how to use it?

Yeah! I am terrible with names, so forgive me. But I use the two handed talisman, the throwing talisman, the axe talisman, and the Godfrey icon (I think this helps, not sure). I also apply some sort of damage buff. I tested to see if the arrow sting talisman would give it more range, and it seems like it doesn't. I'm still experimenting with stuff though, so take this with a grain of salt.

I'd much prefer the Spear of the impaler, but the charge time is a good bit longer than the smith script. I ran a build with both of them before. I'll try again later today.

I absolutely LOVE these weapons btw. I just think a slight damage increase for PVE would be nice. It's damage falloff could also be smoothed a bit it.

Edit: OH IT'S BUGGED. It doesn't allow certain ashes of war. Forgot to mention that.

I love using the scriptsmith daggers but by god are the hitboxes fucked up. Especially on something like horse bound knights in front of shadow keep they just don’t register very well. It’s not even a range issue, I’ve been missing point blank throws against stance broken enemies they’re fun and good but they’re just not reliable
