It exaggerates the already epic sense of scale. Also it prevents knee crushing injuries (the rows are spaced much too close together for how far back the seats recline).
It makes me so sad how terrible all the seating is there. There are so many movies I'd love to see in imax these days but it's just not worth those cramped terrible seats. Give me the worse picture I can watch comfortably at landmark any day.
