It’s that

1) that song was so dumbed down that the hardest lines were literally something random Twitter users could think of

2) Kendrick keeps allying himself with the “intelligent side”

“hey Drake they’re not slow”
“the audience not dumb”
“might write for the doctorate”

I felt a type of way about those lines initially anyways , it’s almost(?) like he’s gaslighting you into thinking that If you take Drake side you dumb and slow and YET his bars in this song are very clearly dumbed down and “slow” enough .

3) if this happened to Drake lines L.O.L , the reaction would be sooooo different … could you even imagine ? I dont feel the need to expand on that after this last two weeks

Many years ago, a man named Fred Moore worked at Disney on their 2D animated films. His primary role was animating "realistic" characters like human princes and princesses. If they needed a real looking character, he was the go to guy and no one could do it better.

Some of the other animators started talking behind his back saying things like, "Well he can't do whacky, weird and out there characters as well as we do." Fred caught wind of this and would go on to create Goofy after which no one talked shit about him again.

The answer to your question is that an artist with a high level of skill can create both high concept and simplistic art and it's not a contradiction to be able to do both, it's a confirmation of that skill.

Are the two mutually-exclusive? Kendrick released three other tracks that were immensely more lyrical than Not Like Us. Drake uses both basic and more complex lyricism depending on the track. It’s not a criticism of an artist to say that they can do both.

Being a lyrical genius doesn't stop you from using basic bars. It's about knowing when which is appropriate. And, honestly, for the purposes of this track, which is trying to get the culture on his side, sort of "crowd-sourcing" the lyrics is actually genius. Kendrick is saying "hey guys we're all on the same team here, right?" and what better way to do that than build the song as a "team?"

The reason those words are getting thrown around is because I've seen Drake fans almost praising and rewarding ignorance, purposely avoiding inference and deduction and using sheer numbers as the barometer for who is the better rapper instead of artistic quality of work they've both produced.

Kendrick fans have spent the last week deciphering lyrics and finding new meanings in bars they've already heard 10 times before because of the quality of the songs and I've seen Drake fans using that against Kendrick. As if it's to Kendricks detriment that his work is capable of being deciphered like a piece of literature.

There are plenty of Drake fans who recognise what Kendrick has achieved in the past week but way too many seem to purposely demean the art and it feels like it's borne from ignorance.

I think the point of the “banger” was K-Dot saying I can have mass appeal by simplifying the lyrics, using repetition, a catchy hook, and a dope beat. I can beat Drake at his own game. By criticizing it as a “dumb down” version of Kendrick’s music you are unintentionally saying that Drake is inherently Dumb. Drake has -mass- appeal. There is nothing wrong with that. Kendrick might be more niche and his claims of cultural appropriation are not wrong. The Beatles did it, Elvis did it, Madonna, did it, Backstreet Boys did it. It’s okay to like and identify with an image, person, brand. We all have our own reasons in identifying with said cultural symbol. A healthy part of self-awareness is to question why we are drawn to certain things.
