Just wondering
If my grandfather served in the Danish Army, would it somehow be possible to acquire citizenship as an American?
ImmigrationWhat year did he enroll? What other countries do you know have this practice?
You can acquire citizenship just like any other person. Be of incredible value to Denmark, or slug it out with the immigration department. You are not Danish because of your family left generations ago. You are American, nothing else.
Be nice
What wasnt nice? Its just the harsh truth?
There are adult people who are born in the country who doesn’t even hold a Danish citizenship. You would have to take a test and document fluency in Danish. And that’s only possible if one of your parents are Danish and you are under the age of 22.
I think citizenship in Denmark is more related to culture than your ancestors. Probably very different from US
I once ate a Big Mac. Can I have my citizenship now?
Only if you have fries with it
How dishonoring do you have to be to compare eating a burger to serving 35 years to protect everything your country stands for?
We just don't make a big show out of serving in any military branch.
That's probably unique to the US.
So you haven't met a Royal Life Guard
I've worked with one who served with them for a while. Happily forgot 😅
That’s very interesting. Thanks for sharing
How entitled do you have to be, to think that citizenship is handed out for your ancestors service? There is absolutely no valor for you to claim. You did nothing. Sincerely, one who actually served his country.
Nice word choice. Go ahead and make it sound like I asked for anyone to hand me anything. It was intended to be more of a discussion of how military status impacts your family and what benefits are handed down. Because in my country, children and immediate family are also qualified for countless benefits that the service member has. Thank you for showing me how little value it is to risk your life for Denmark!
And now you are on full tilt. That's pretty much par for the course, when entitled Americans try to jump ship to a Scandinavian country, offering nothing but claim of heritage.
It holds tremendous value to serve, but not as a commodity entitled kids can claim down the line. Try moaning to your grandfather about how his service doesn't get you anything. I am sure he will be proud.
I just transited through a us airport and got reminded, that you give special treatment to those who have been part of the military. I thought it was a bit peculiar (in a way I can understand the thoughts behind on the other hand it doesn’t really make sense to me - a cultural difference) and considered if there was anything like it in Denmark. There is not. The only thing I can think of in that manor is that a few years back they made a day that honored those who served. I think in Denmark military is considered more a job by most people. And it has no effect on your descendants.
Wow! That is so different! That seems like a very liberal mindset, no?
What do you mean by liberal? Liberal in Europe (and Denmark) means one who is in favour of freedom, and usually means market deregulatory politics combined with pro-social freedom, access to votes and increasing suffrage.
What honor? There is no honor in being a slave in any Way..
A.. slave????
What Else do you Call fighting and dying in some far Away place, to make some fat Rich guy evne richer?
Talk to some of your own veterans, they know all about what its like.. there is no honor in what they are doing
Context: while this sub is named Denmark it's not representative of the country. It's mostly alt-left. It would be like if the US sub was populated by Portland and SF citizens only.
Descendants of WW II resistance veterans do gain some minor benefits in society like access to cheap student housing but nothing like the US.
In general Denmark has been able to free-ride its NATO membership on your tax money so our military is underfunded and low status. Many citizens take their safety for granted and see the military as aggressive only not defensive.
Alt left? 🤣
Thanks for sharing. I have noticed that people on this sub have VERY leftist views.
Its not very left.. just look at any post about anything that have to do with immigrants..
nope
No. You can read about the rules for citizenship and applications procedure here: https://www.uim.dk/statsborgerskab/in-english/
Gtfo
Danish army is underpaid and treated as trash once they return home as mental or a leg blown off. There is no way 🙅🏻♂️
That is crazy to me. The US is so different and it really shows when you look at our kd ratio
It really inst.. a ton of veterans are left to suffer when they get Home…
A lil off topic here. The graduation tradition and certificate you get in US is so much better looking than in Denmark. I was planning to frame mine until I saw your country's. I guess it stays in my folder instead 😌
Americans should stay in america. You’ve got plenty of space over there. Our cultures are so vastly different and you probably wouldn’t like it here.
You should be able to get it. But you need a proof that your grandaddad also had a danish citizenship, then you go to take indfødsret test on danish and you shall be good to go.
Nope - Grandparents citizenship and military service does not make you eligilble for danish citizenship. If one of your parents are danish, you have to apply before you are 22 years old, and prove you spent a significant time growing up in Denmark.
