I need help. I’m new to writing songs and I just wrote my first song on guitar which is heavily inspired by Dave Matthew’s. Does anybody have any advice of what to do nest if I want to keep the Dave Matthew’s inspiration. The mood is kind of like a heart break or a longing for someone, kind of reminds me of Crash Into Me and Grace is Gone
By “what to do next” do you mean instrumentally since the song is written, or do you mean you need advice for polishing off the lyrics?
Edited to add: either way, I’d resist the urge to finish your song relying too heavily on inspiration from Dave, and I feel like he would tell you the same thing. I myself have fallen into a trap where I get too deep into the mindset more or less of “what would Dave write” and what I end up writing, while seemingly pretty solid, is just not genuine to me because I was focusing more on Dave than I was myself, and songs that are definitively genuine are more often than not the best songs.
Part of what makes Dave’s lyrics and music so special is that it’s completely and totally genuine to him and what he was feeling at the time. Striking a good balance between “genuine” and “imitation” is a lot easier said than done, but it really is what will leave you having written something you’re tremendously proud of. It’s hard to give concrete advice, but what I’ll say to you is do not doubt yourself or what you write. You can get lost in “fine tuning” something so just put pen to paper and try to be as true to yourself as you can be.
I already have the guitar part down but I’m looking to write lyrics
