Checkmate wouldn't be a team like Stormwatch, it'd be an agency. Like the CIA but worse.
Could be something where the leaders of Checkmate are trying to shore up their own power through superteams. Waller as the White Queen has Task Force X. If Lord is the Black King then he has the JLI. If Alan Scott is the White King he has the JSA.
yup..that makes sense..
This does make me wonder what the state of the Justice League is in this new universe. Is there only Lord’s sponsored JLI? Is the Justice League proper around? Did they disband?
I don't think the Justice League exists yet and I don't think we will get the team together until a bigger threat. We still have to wait until other shows and movies too.

It's all in Peacemaker's head. Easy fix! Have him bragging about the Justice League being at the farm and everyone can be like "What are you talking about?".
I have a theory that this is Lord's attempt at a neq Superhero team, and it's the first incarnation of the League in this timeline. Maybe James Gunn is doing another reverse-kingdome come style thing. Where the JLI needs to be revamped and taught a better way to be heroes, a way that doesn't involve killing or being brutal. My theory is that Superman will disagree with these methods and maybe start up a new League of his own accord with the more classic looking team, this will probably be close to the end of the Chapter though.
I like this a lot. For Superman to show that there is a better way by being their own thing. As opposed to being a corporate team or government sanctioned or something like that.
Actually not a bad theory

I don't think there's really a Justice League proper yet. Although maybe the Justice Society was a thing in this university who disbanded some time ago.

Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl and Green Lantern are all legacy heroes with predecessors in the JSA so I think this is likely. I'm just curious about which team comes next.
Well, I'm sure the movie is gonna reference or explain the status of the Justice League. But, I have a theory in mind.
What if the Justice League already exists? And I'm not talking about the JLI. I mean the OG one, the JL, or JLA. It makes sense if we take into account the original origin or JLA: Year One by Mark Waid. Neither Superman nor Batman were part of the team in the beginning.
So, maybe the JLI is the government's or Lord's way of having a team that could be more malleable or something.
It would be cool if they referenced a JLA existing in the past, but are probably retired for the most part.

This is actually really interesting. We know Hal in Lanterns is a veteran GL who's mentoring the newly recruited John so they could say that Hal in his younger days was part of this original JLA. This would mean Barry would be a bit older too.
This also makes it natural that Hal would be older than Clark.
I noticed that as well, Justice League International kinda softly confirmed to be pre-existing now, but the founding members seem to be Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Metamorpho
it spells out JLI
Superman being an alternative to corporate sponsored superheroes is an interesting take from the guy rebooting the DC cinematic universe after coming off a rough exit from Marvel/Disney…
What if we’re wrong and the brutality of other heroes isn’t in question here yet, but that corporate sanctioned heroes aren’t allowed to save everyone due to politics, districting, etc, and are just there to make the corporations money.
Superman operates outside of that. Heroes are sanctioned on teams and given clearance to operate. This is Gunns jab at the boys, and at marvel shoehorning lesser known characters without build up with this lineup. It also makes Superman unique and the ideal hero that the dc heroes look up to in the comics. And more important to this DCU as other heroes follow his example.
The LORD team consists of heroes who would make up the JLI but i bet the joke is going to be that guy realizes the lord logo looks like “JIL” and he says something dumb like “Justice International League” and Terrific or Superman say “what if it’s Justice league international?” And for funding Kord industries helps out but let these heroes be individuals instead of corporate shills with matching costumes, but Kord is missing setting up Booster Gold. I have a feeling the villain isn’t ultraman/bizarro/ or whomever is in that black outfit. It’ll end up being Lex in a Luthosuit(since lexcorp doesn’t exist in this universe for some reason)
I think JLI, if you consider the black vertical line in the middle as well.
All other heroes except Superman are part of same team whose benefactor is Maxwell Lord, hence they have same patterned uniform.
JLI is sponsored by Max Lord. Checkmate and Stormwatch by the government. Flag Sr and Engineer are part of later and they are against Superman. Seems likely from set leaks so far.
