Teachers complain so much

I don't believe teachers have it easy but I definitely think at least a few of my teachers could definitely step it up lmao! Got a couple disaster rooms that I know for a fact it's not the kids but the teacher letting them get away with too much cause we have one sub who, every time she has to sub for them, the room is nearly spotless after! Man that lady got me spoiled... She can't sub for too long in any room for my sanity cause if I get used to it boy does it suck to go back to the normal teacher! 😂

We of course have at least one opposite substitute teacher as well and any room she subs for is somehow EVEN WORSE than the normal teacher! 😬

It's definitely hit or miss for me, I have some teachers that go out of their way to make my job easier, which I greatly appreciate. And on the other hand we have teachers that complain about every little thing even when you do exactly what they want. Just depends on the person.

I lasted three years as a middle school teacher and it's fucking brutal. Not to say there aren't dramatic or spoiled teachers, but there's a reason I'm happy to clean up vomit and shit. It's because it's SO MUCH BETTER than being a teacher.

They can be naive about things, which can be annoying for sure, but teaching for three years wrecked me mentally. I will never feel jealous of a teacher's job.

Teachers are perceived as having it easy but they really don't. Teachers don't get vacation where I am.They may not go to school during summer, but I can tell you that come August they are working (at least the ones that care). Most weekends they are already working on things so actually going in on a weekend is a pain in the ass. I married a teacher and she is constantly having to work after hours with parents and planning while taking care of our kids. They have a lot of great perks but they work for it.

The easiest way to find out is to go volunteer and sit in a classroom for a week at a high school.

I’m not a teacher, but I am a custodian and I see every day what transpires and the results, of kids who don’t respect rules, have no consideration for others.

These teachers are therapists,nurses, advocates in addition to teaching.

I can assure you that the complaining is more than likely justified.

Our society would splinter without these heroes.

I think they say they have it somewhat hard because of the prices and stuff rising but I do think they're pretty spoiled in a way. But I've met some teachers who are basically set for life. Tho I hate their complaining, some are super nice. But I can sympathize with you on that note. I wish custodians got discounts and paid months off of work I'd be a dream come true tbh. And honestly I don't want to be a teacher either I'm shy as well. I

It sounds excruciating to work so much. And it may be easy to compare someone else to you when it seems they are not as exhausted as you are.

With that being said, they have it easier in some regards, but as custodians, so do we. We are bot tasked with such a heavy mental load of navigating with hundreds of students and their emotions and attitudes on a daily basis.

I hope you find the strength to fight for what you deserve and channel some of that anger to do justice for yourself to in order to not have to work so much and get to enjoy some of your time off. One of the perks( at least in my viewpoint) is that we also get a good amount of time off compared to other lines of work.

As a worker, your adversary is not the other workers. It is the administration. Teachers aren't the ones deciding on your pay and the hours you have to work.

Yep. I’ve been a soldier, a janitor, a lowly factory and warehouse worker, and now a trucker. Teachers are frankly fucking delusional if they think they have it hard. I don’t doubt that teaching a room full of children is not without its challenges. But my god they have summers off! Winter break, spring break, every holiday imaginable. They work short days in comfortable conditions and get off early in the afternoon.

If a teacher thinks they have it hard they desperately need a reality check. Think you’re underpaid for what you do? I make $1,400 dollars a week as a trucker. I work 14 hours a day. And at the end of that work day? I spend 10 hours in my sleeper cab. Break that down hourly and it’s a whopping $20. Oh and I get to stay out on the road for weeks at a time!

Any time I hear a teacher complain about their job I can’t help but roll my eyes.

I mean they work half the year, they get allll the holiday breaks off, teacher discounts, appreciation weeks, and are able to use their vacation days, they make double what I make, but will relentlessly bit$& about how hard their job is and how underpaid they are.

Married to a teacher so I can clarify most of this. Yes they get summers off but since they're paid so poorly most work year round with summer jobs and a second job during the year if they can.

Not sure what point your trying to make about vacation days. If you can't use your vacation days that sounds like an employer problem and not something to be mad at teachers for. Same goes for the argument for pay, don't get mad at someone else because they get paid a better wage, get mad at your employer for not providing one.

Teachers contract has them paid to be there for 8~ hours a day. A lot of teachers stay after school to help students out of the kindness of their heart. Grading paperwork, checking homework, and writing lesson plans when they get home adds up to multiple hours unpaid per week. They receive no overtime like we do and are still expected to work 40-60 hours for the same 40 hours salary. Their position also requires them to be working towards a master in their respected fields. A lot of schools don't pay for additional schooling for teachers yet still require it for the position. They likely won't receive raises adequate to what they spend on their master's either, so for them it's a long term investment of going to school 5-15 hours a week while also teaching.

None of this also even accounts for the mental toll of trying to be a conductor for an orchestra of 30 5-18 year olds 5-8 times a day. I get mentally exhausted being in a building custodial meeting for 10 mins, I couldn't imagine being in charge of a runaway train for 8 hours every day while also required to do my tasks.

All our teachers are awesome and I have a lot of respect for them. I could never do their job and put up with these kids the way some of them act.

My apologies if you already have done this, but you should fight for your vacation days, at least when school isn't in session. It's part of your compensation, so if they aren't getting paid out either and you're literally losing them, I'd be so PO'd.

I know the USA is stupid, but maybe your state law haa some sort of protection for this type of situation?

I really seen this during Covid. They were off that whole time and to justify their pay they had to call 10 students a day and ask if they were doing non mandatory school work online. And all the emails of how they miss their kids and how they should be considered hero’s to. A week after they came back that all went out the window

Used to be at a middle school in the district I'm currently with and one of the gym teachers just woke up one day and decided they didn't like me personally. Started making up complaints about me saying I was sitting in her office, touching her stuff, and not cleaning the gym. Manager and department head knew this was bs so they kinda ignored it at first. She wouldn't stop so my manager talked to principal and asked him to talk to her. Still didn't stop... it got worse. One day I come in and someone took the bottle of bowl cleaner I kept in the front office bathroom and sprayed it all over the floor. It was intentional, I tried knocking the bottle on the floor to see if would spill or leak and it didn't. Of course I have no proof it was her but it was quite the coincidence it happened the same day the principal was supposed to talk to her🤷‍♂️. The problem continued and because she was the representative of the teachers union for the building she started complaining on behalf of all the teachers about the cleanliness of the whole building but took the time to focus in on my section. I had enough and asked my manager if I could be transferred to a different building. Week later he found a guy at one of our elementary schools that wanted my section and we swapped. Current section is a bit bigger which kinda sucks, and I went from mostly vacuuming to mostly sweeping and mopping which I personally don't like. But the teachers here are extremely friendly and appreciative tho and the secretaries heard I was being transferred in so they learned my name and made me a little welcome sign. Apparently they hated the guy I swapped with 🤣.

We definitely have a crappy job, are under payed, and under appreciated but teachers do have it hard too but for different reasons. I don't have to clean student desks at home if I didn't finish at work 😂.

Sounds like my district is pretty different from yours in terms of PTO. Here if we want a day off we fill out a sheet submit it and 9 times out of 10 we get the day off. If like 5 other people are already scheduled off you might be denied for lack of coverage. We also get all the holidays off BUT we don't get paid for all of them. Spring break and winter break being the main ones.

TL DR; teachers can be annoying, I know from experience, but they have it hard too. PTO and holidays work differently at the district I work at.

From talking with the few that I get to in my current section and ones I spoke with at my last job- there is a lot more going on than we see. Between pressure put on them to make sure their students are meeting certain requirements, them needing additional training, schooling, meetings, and having no time to do lesson plans because of how busy everything is; I can kinda understand where they’re coming from. That’s not even including things like student write ups, needing to talk to or deal with parents, them having other school responsibilities like clubs, or being the head of this or that program, maybe needing to “volunteer” for some kind of after school program, on top of teaching, then you can factor in having a family at home as well, along with needing your own personal time to collect yourself to be able to do it again.
That doesn’t apply to every and all teachers, but still.

I think they see custodians as their personal little slaves sometimes. The audacity of some teachers while I was a custodian was insane. They expected me to do things for their classroom everyday just bc their kids were gross. Sorry I vacuum every other day and I will not add any more work in with how much I was making. (8$ an hour at that time) I hated how one summer this guy made us move this huge table two floors up and then decided he “ didn’t like the way it looked “. So my manager made us move it back. I had only 3.5 hours to do my job and had to buff the floor every other day I wasn’t vacuuming. I tried to do my best to get reasonable cleanliness for them but it never was enough. They expected me to work back breaking my and my boss was out to get me at that time. Kept claiming I didn’t clean the staff bathroom everyday which I did. Even had my night manager deep clean it with me once. I was still told I didn’t clean it. Only nice thing about being a custodian was not interacting with people and I still had to deal with their bs.

It won’t matter every job you’re at people will complain. Make 100k they want 150k work 8 hours they want to work 2 and be paid for 6. I just put my headphones on and slip away. I don’t get caught up into that. Just what’s in front of me.

Bro, how many teachers do you remember being good at their jobs VS being total dipshits? Teachers will whine about grading papers all night, going to frivilous meetings, extra training, blah blah blah. Yeah, no shit losers, the job comes home with you - welcome to reality. You set your lesson plan for the year and the next year it takes 1/10th the time to edit it for next year. You actually KNOW the topic you assign papers on and you can grade papers quickly and with legitimate feedback (not just run-on and plural marks).

The only teachers I've ever heard complain were teachers who never worked outside K-12. Those same teachers were terrible and totally uneducated on the subjects they taught.

Most people can only name ONE good teacher they had, the rest were trash. What can you expect from people who go 100k into debt and earn 40k/yr?

you're not dealing with smart people here - the overwhelming majority of teachers are completely inept, which makes it that much worse that society pawns child rearing off on a government facility. You don't need to respect these bums, so why EXPECT anything more?

Yeah, I think you’re a little off base here. Their level of compensation is ridiculously low compared to what kind of qualifications they need.

I imagine it's like doing our job with 36 kids in your space abusing you all day long. Add to that technology I don't understand, paperwork, plans, state rules, ect. Even if it's stressful for us at least it's quiet. I have a lot of respect for them and I'm glad to see others in this position feel the same.

There are some that complain way too much considering the perks of the job, but I’m not getting emails about how their misbehaving little sociopath is failing a class that they refuse to participate in because they’re constantly throwing a tantrum that is somehow related to the way I conduct my job. I just do the facility work and am largely left alone. I can’t say that I would want to deal with parents in that capacity at all.

I think we all have it hard dealing with kids (and their parents sometimes), and shouldn't put each other down.

I love my teaching job (elementary special education), and the custodians are my favorite people at school. But I assume other teachers have good reasons to complain. I'm stretched pretty thin but I do like to help them as much as I can, which usually very little.

Support staff should be paid a lot better than they are. It’s sad, across the board.

I've told many teachers and administrators I'll take my job over theirs any day of the week. Yes, it's physically demanding, but kids are jerks. The only ones I don't like too much are the ones that act like we're beneath them.

I know it's a lot of work and involvement. Although the teachers I work with don't express anything. I have 2 teachers who go above and beyond and stay over time. But they seem to be enjoying their job. They play music and talk while they set up stuff for the next day. I just give them their space and clean their room last so they can feel at home.

Those Teachers make less then you, at least in my school district the Janitors made 25-30 an hour... while a teaching starting out only made about 22 an hour (They dident make hourly but it just sums it up)

I was a school custodian for 5 years before I got my degree, then became a substitute teacher, now am a custodial supervisor at the hospital and substitute teach on the side.

I get the kids to clean up for the custodians, at least pick up their big messes, wipe the desks off, etc.

We had a teacher who I swear had her students do Everything except take out the trash 😂

I am sorry you are going through that and hearing them complain. They have a tough job but so do custodians.

I can only say that I cannot imagine being TRAPPED in a room with other people’s children for hours on end. There isn’t enough money.

You're a custodian. It's not the same. Do you clean the school up until your last seconds of sleep? Do you pass out grading papers at midnight? Or writing new curriculum? You don't deal with a classroom full of kids all day. You clean up the facilities. Stop comparing. No, teachers do not bitch too much.

You've conveniently left out paying for classroom supplies out of their own Pocket, working well into the evening to complete marking, the fact summers are often spent completing training, planning lessons and more marking. All so YOUR kid can have a shot at a decent education.

You have more free time than a teacher. You wouldn't last a week teaching.
