Based on this text I just got from Portola I’m guessing one of the headliners is ODESZA “across the room”. Are there any clues to who the second headliner might be that I’m missing?
That’s a super fair point. The text was giving off a strong hint though, I just can’t imagine that was an accident. Unless it’s hinting at someone else and I’m just not picking up on it.
I don’t think “saw you from across the room” is at all an Odesza reference lol. That’s just a reasonably common saying; Odessa’s song doesn’t even use that whole line.

When Rufus announced their tour they said something to the effect of these are the only shows we’re playing this year so I wouldn’t expect it to be them.

Forgot Odesza is at OSL. That 100% makes them unavailable for Portola. As far as headliners, it’s tricky. If Justice has a new show, they’re in consideration. Aphex Twin could headline at any time. Could be the HOLO show’s one time to make a SF appearance. It’s still very unpredictable.

I disagree. Flume is very involved in the indie dance world that Portola draws much of their inspiration from. His work with Sophie, Eprom, Caroline Polachek, and Toro y Moi sets him apart from something much more EDM and spectacle driven like Odesza
Ok that’s fair, I just feel like they have similar fanbases especially when looking at like say their 2016 work. But flume definitely pushes boundaries a lot more than Odesza does, especially recently

Don’t think it’s as different as you suggest. They had julia holter on the intro. I also don’t think the vibe is as defined as you might think. It wasn’t even that diff from this ain’t no picnic really.
Portola was conceived by a GV talent buyer who was inspired by the European electronic scene. Odesza is an American act with a very American sound.
Having one vocalist on an intro track doesn’t equate to the level of involvement Flume has within the European and underground dance scene globally.
This aint no picnic had an entire stage that was basically the exact same vibes plus despacio, plus godford, leon vynehall, four tet floating points, jungle, analon emerson, TSHA, caroline polachek, MCDE, Dawn Richard, gerd janson, honey dijon, kaytranada, Kelly Lee Owens, LCD Soundsystem, Romy, Mag Bay, Palms Trax, Sofia Kourtesis, etc. It was basically the same alt/leftfield dance plus some indie. Just because Odesza does not seem like the sorta act that fits into that exactly does not mean they wouldn't book them. They are a huge festival draw in this country.

It was actually really dope. Just also pointing out that there were a ton of people booked at Portola that were American or North American at least. Lane 8, Caroline Polacheck, Justin Martin, Bob Moses, Caribou, Holographic, OPN, DJ Shadow etc. I agree that most of that lineup did not fit in the whole Insomniac dance lineup sorta bookings, however, just pointing out that they will deviate from whatever idea they will have if it makes sense. I'm sure Justin Martin, DJ Shadow, Eug, were booked as a nod to bay area roots, for example.
I’m not saying it’s only European acts getting booked at Portola. All of those artists are from NA, but they have a much more European sound and audience than what Odesza has.
I don’t think any of those names you listed deviate from the indie dance world, except maybe Lane 8, but he plays super well to European audiences considering their affinity for melodic techno.
odesza would not get my money. I mean really if it's just a redux of coachella 2023 or just a hint for next year, i probably just skip and full send III Points.
Especially if you live in California you have like 5 chances to see ODESZA every year. I like them a lot, probably seen them like 5-6 times by now since 2014 but I’m pretty tired of seeing them on festival lineups.
Def think they are good performers, just not sure that would be driving force like Chemical Brothers were for me last year.

The calculus is if I had to pick 1 2 day fest I’d prob put my money on iii points. I was much more satisfied with that goes til 5 am experience than Portola last year. They give the big acts longer sets, the sound was not shitty at a major stage like warehouse and I already know I’m doing Coachella next year.
