I think it's usually because they recognize that being a bigot is bad, but they don't see deeper to why it's bad. It just means "bad" to them. So they get angry because they know they're good people and it's silly to call them bad.

Old men who give sermons twist scripture to convince people that if they just judge righteously, they can judge everyone and Jesus will thank them. I've heard those sermons.

Some progressive Christians believe all conservative interpretations of the bible are coming from hate.

Like apart from whether I believe the Bible or not, may I not have the belief that Bible condemns homosexuality? According to some progressives, I may not have that belief at all.

They know being a bigot is bad, just like they know being a fascist is bad and being a nationalist is bad. If they didn't know it was bad, they wouldn't care that they're being called it.

I lean more toward conservativism in the contexts of what you're talking about here (though politically I'm center and theologically I'm leaning more left), and being called a bigot, hateful, etc doesn't bother me.

If you exist around humans, you will be judged. Even if Jesus judged no one, it wouldn't stop people from judging him. That's just part of human inclination, whether good or bad.

It's very ironic hearing "you're trying to shame us because of our religion" when you do plenty of shaming yourself.

I'm not here to defend any group of people. Christians, conservatives, etc. What's right is right and what's wrong is wrong regardless of who it comes from.

But, the point in this statement is, the people doing the shaming in this case believe they are shaming an ethical injustice, and they believe that those shaming the religion of these ethics are shaming something bad.

In other words, it's like if you go up to an alcoholic who is homeless and you take the bottle from him and give him water, someone will come up to you and judge you for being evil and stealing from the man. You believe your judgement is saving the man, they believe you are infringing on his right to choose. You believe you're helping him keep to his right to live.

This is just the basic balance of ethics. In other words, the problem you need to address is why the religion they hold to is unethical and worthy of being criticized, if you want your conversation to move forward.

If at least conservative Christians were extremely careful to keep their beliefs inside of the church, then they could at least argue that they are just doing their thing and just want to be left alone.

That's not what Christians on the whole want, nor is it what we are obligated to do. We are to be a light in the world and not hide under a basket. We don't want to "just be left alone." We do want to impose our ethics on the world because we believe them to be right. Is that any different from a president who goes to war to try and save a tortured people? Or who opens up immigration status for someone who is fleeing from an afflicted country? He's imposing his ethics outward because he believes it's for a greater good.

The conversations need to be had. We all need to push truth and morality, but we all have to be checked to make sure what we push is right.

If you tell someone they are sinners and/or going to hell, it is like puunching them in the nose. 9 times out of 10 they are going to punch you back by calling you a bigot, a racist, a homophobe. Normally the conservative christian makes the first punch. If you don't want to get punched in the nose, don't throw the first punch. Heaven would be where no one punches anyone ever. We all just got along with our differences

It's not limited purely to conservative Christians. It's like any of the whinging conservatives do when their bigotry is pointed out in general.

They want to be able to push people around and then not have it pointed out exactly what that makes them.

Could be main character syndrome. Could be another angle to their general unpleasant character, i.e. "I'll judge you and then make you call me a good person for doing it".

The other side of the aisle is hardly unpushy, but I also really don't think there is the same level of care given to what their critics think of them personally.

It's like the dynamic I've often seen with the love the sinner hate the sin types, who get surprisingly touchy when you point out they're not being loving. Like just have your shit opinion and have done with it, why do you need our validation too? If I started worrying what Christians thought about me given that I'm highly critical of them and their faith I'd be thinking I'm making a mistake somewhere along the line.

Why are Progressives so invested in calling Conservatives bigots? If it wasn't something worth arguing about you wouldn't be posting about it.

The way you pose this question is the equivalent to walking up to a baseball player, hit them over the head with a metal bat, and then asking, "Huh, why do you not like getting hit with a metal bat?" Because it's rude.

What you're assuming is people's ability to self-reflect. Not just for conservative Christians, but foreveryone. But then there's the problem of the environment in which people exist.

In many cases, Conservative Christians surround themselves with people who think exactly the same way they do. They go to their churches and their Christian communities where they listen to sermons that talk about how they are right, and everyone else is wrong and evil. You cannot look/act/behave/think differently in churches, most of these Christians are very intolerant of differences. When you live your life convinced that you are the one who has the Truth, and the rest are in denial, self-reflection doesn't happen.

I still think that a lot of people are simply scared. People who want complete control over how others behave and live their lives fear everything that they cannot control, so they try to force control on everything and everyone. Then they get mad when the rest of society says nope, we don't want your ways.

Because its loosely applied with varying standards and usually based on disagreement and not true bigotry

I think it’s because those who use the term do so subjectively

Person 1 - “You’re a bigot if you hate gay people”

Person 2 - “You’re a bigot if you don’t support gay marriage/rights”

Person 3 - “You’re a bigot if you don’t welcome gay people as members of your church”

Person 4 - “You’re a bigot if you vote for candidates that are anti-LGBT (regardless of the reason you voted for them)”

Person 5 - “You’re a bigot if you don’t vote pro-LGBT candidates”

Person 6 - “You’re a bigot if you don’t use your platform to condemn violence against LGBT people”

Person 7 - “You’re a bigot if you don’t attend a protest against a certain bill”

Person 8 - “You’re a bigot if you’re a Baptist”

Person 9 - “You’re a bigot if you speak at campus crusade”

I’ve heard all of these statements. Some of them I’ve heard leveled against gay people by straight people.

1-3 are, imho, bigotry. Past that, using that word is just a weapon to illicit an emotional response. It doesn’t mean anything, except that the user doesn’t actually care about gay people…they just want to dump on people who vote differently or prioritize different things

Homosexuality and abortion are both sins according to the Bible.  Does that make my a "bigot" for saying that? Lol
