Thinking about ordering my first country ham for my birthday this year. Never tried one before. Curious to know if folks have brand recommendations. Along those lines, thoughts about buying a smoked versus unsmoked country ham? What do y’all prefer, and what’s a good option for a first time eater? For what it’s worth, I love prosciutto, especially when it has some mild funky aromas. Thanks for your guidance!
What do you prefer about Edwards?
It eats more like prosciutto and less like a country ham.
I should specify because they do have several options for hams. I prefer the Surryano ham from Edward’s over their other choices. Because of the previously mentioned reason.
Don’t know if this is new or not, but Benton’s sells theirs super thinly sliced like prosciutto. So good.
Looks like you're American by your posts (Btw GPG). Id recommend reaching out to Lady Edison, they might be able to sell you an entire leg. Theyre becoming a fan favorite our the East coast. Other than that, theres the classic southern companies like Benton, Edwards, and Broadbent.
Finchville Farms is another good one, and Colonel Newsom's are something special.
Uncle Bucky's and Bonavista Bunuelo hams are some of the most prized, although really sought after and tough to buy without a long preorder
RM Felts out of Ivor, VA. Hard to find if you aren't down there, but worth the money.
If you’re looking for a smoked country ham at a decent price I’d say Benton’s in Tennessee. Won’t cost you more than $100 and it’s a good intro into hams. If I was ordering myself I’d go with Edward’s from Virginia but I do get Benton’s from time to time because they are delicious.
