1) The to-be-owner just took his driving lessons. 2) Family of 3. 3) Car required for a daily commute of 60-70km and occasional long drives with family. 4) Fuel efficiency prefered over other aspects, although basic tech features would be great to have. 5) Intends to sell the car in 4-5 years (after gaining enough driving experience) and buy a better car.
Which is the best way to buy a used car?
DON'T use apps .. just visit local dealers.. get a known mechanic/friend with good auto mechanics knowledge.
You'll find better and cheaper cars
If you have contacts then try them out by asking. And connecting with a buyer directly. Like society whatsapp group, office whatsapp/chat etc.
If you don't, you can try the Maruti TruValue and Spinny for used cars.
Use spinny for used cars then make a post here later claiming how can they ask for 10lakhs for an Alto
It's for the Lord
visit any showroom hyundai, toyota, maruti all have refurbished cars wings spinny my friend has used twice it's also good
I got my first car from Cars24. It was a relatively good experience only. Good thing was the 7 day return period and 6 month warranty. I faced battery issues, so they gave compensation for the replacement. Price is maybe some 5-10% more than what you could get if you bargained at local used car sellers, but was worth it for me, and also we had an urgent requirement as there was a function in the family. Overall, I think these Cars24, Spinny are good options.
I dont think its 5/10% at all. Its a minimum of 50k/1.5lakh than the local market. Its good for ppl who cant take the trouble of getting a car examined. I recently got a car from the local market and i saved at least a lakh over cars 24.
First shortlist cars from Car dekho/Olx etc. Be open to taking many test drives. It will take time & u just cant have a deadline to buy a used car. U have to keep trying till you find that perfect car for yourself.
Recently got a Honda Jazz CVT 2016 with 55k kms on odo with service record from Honda for 4Lakhs from a local dealer. His initial asking price was 5lakhs. While bargaining make sure u quote an anchor price so low even if it seems absurd. Then u can pull up slowly with him coming down.
Took the car for complete inspection @ authorised honda service center. Charges some Rs 2200. Nothing major Gearbox/Engine/suspension rock solid. No rusting.
Deal done.
Also Cars which i almost got.
Honda Jazz 2015 diesel. ( Cancelled after getting to know that the meter was tampered. Odo showed 70k kms. Honda records showed 113k kms.) Final price agreed : 3.7lakh.
Etios Cross 2015. Took it to toyota, did a total chkup. Clutch & brake issues. Total estimate of all the repairs needed was around 30k. The first two being major. Asked the dealer to waive off 15k as a gesture of goodwill he denied. Deal cancelled. Agreed price: 3.5lakh.
Other than these three cars, took test drive of atleast 10/15 cars. The search lasted for almost 3.5months. i didn't have a deadline.
Hey prabho you are car god ๐ฟ
Just FYI. Forgot about safety with those cars. And since family is involved think twice before going for those
If Maruti, buy from Maruti True Value
You could try True Value - Marutiโs 2nd hand car dealerships. They are good.
Facebook marketplace
Baleno. Good fuel efficiency, good for beginners and good resale value.
What would you recommend as upgrade to baleno?
Thatโs depends on the usage.
Brezza
How about Swift Zxi?
Baleno is more vfm than that.
Swift is the most fun to drive under 10L...i think go for it because driving should be fun not just sitting inside a box and keep moving.
I do like the looks of it. Tell me more about what makes it fun.
Haven't driven the new one but the old one is super fun! Really good feedback from the steering, good suspension, an engine that loves to be revved and produces lots of power. Turning is also really sharp... It almost feels like a go-kart. Check out gagan Choudhary's review of the new one
Quite helpful. Thanks.
10 lakh me safety chaiye ya mileage
10L is quite a bit of money, I would say safety, I would consider something like Magnite Turbo but at the end of the day, itโs his choice ofc
yeh post pehle hoti chachu ko yeh suggest karta but unhone baleno leli aakhir me kiya kare , thanks buddy for best suggestion in 10 lakh
Read his 4th point.
Safety is 4
Hatchbacks or those jacked up hatchbacks (which they call micro SUVs). Iโd go with baleno/i10 or punch/magnite/kiger and call it a decade
How about Swift Zxi?
Get a hatch instead of pseudo SUV. i20, Altroz are your best bets
How about Swift Zxi?
I would recommend going the new car route rather than a used car. You need to focus on your driving and the last thing you need is to worry about reliability. A used car will come with its share of problems depending on how old the car is. And the price of a used car these days is on par with new ones so it makes sense to get a new one.
Since you need to get comfortable with driving I would suggest a hatchback. Anything that is easy to drive and maneuver. There are quite a few options under 10L so you can test drive and decide which you would like to go for.
Availability of good service centres nearby is an important aspect of ownership especially for a first time owner so talk to your friends and family members who already own cars and see which dealerships are good and which to avoid and accordingly decide on which brand you want to go with.
I guess there is also the concern of mileage when it comes to used cars?
A new driver is going to get the car dinged and scraped with 90% surety, maybe damage components prematurely due to bad technique and habits. Best beginner car is a used car.
Yep...you wouldn't know in what condition the previous owner maintained the car...good second hand cars are hard to come by. With a new car you get warranty as well and chances of trouble popping up is less.
Nissan Magnite/ Renault Kiger if more ground clearance is needed.
Better would be to get a used car if it is a given that after 3-4 years the car will be sold. For buying a 2nd hand car you will have to go to dealers and also check online listings. Take a mechanic with you preferably someone who has worked on the cars you have shortlisted. Do not finalise the car without expert opinion.
Punch for safety(daily 60-70km), Baleno for fuel efficiency and lower cost of maintenance
How about Swift Zxi?
Buy swift zxi, not 2024 . It got some power and soul to it.
I 10
I used this car for 1 year I took 150km trip without stop and no problem 1 of the best AC for long drives with 6 people in a car no and
But one problem when a sudden steep comes on a road the tyre touches the top reason is simple soft suspension
Base model have all basic features and also ambient lights under the dashboar
6 people 80kmph it gives 20 kmpl in summer and 24 in winters
Top speed I took to 140 kmph
The silence ๐คซ inside car so much better that sometimes I forgot the car is start and have to see the rpm meter
It cast me around 7 lakh
From other than this Baleno is a good option and i20 and sonet if it comes under 10 lakh
I doubt 20kmpl mileage
If you drive at seed of 80-90 kmph for more than 100 km trip you will find this miledge and in the MID it shows 29.9 kmpl now tell me how is this possible ๐คช
I10 and 6 people?
Even 5 is a squeeze in i10, 6 is a no-no.
Yes bro 2023 model magna from Ludhiana to Amritsar
Bro, praise the car. Okay. 20 kmpl is over the top.
My Altroz gives 20kmpl on highways with ac on, I don't see why the i10 won't
My venue gives me 20 with ac on, with 2 people on highway
Yeah man but my mama have elite I20 diesel 2019 I cruise at 110 kmph and gives 25 kmpl after running 90,000 km
Nissan Magnite
if you are looking for a new get
base+2/3 3X0 or MG astor.
mid venue or SONET.
top/ near top I20 or Exter.
Ertiga is also good for a bigger family.
Considering your driving range, I assume you will be mostly using highways. In that case, new-gen SUVs may not provide the best mileage but are great for safety.
If you are open to a second-hand car (since you want to upgrade quickly), you could consider a fairly new 2019-2020 Creta, XUV500, or Honda City (my personal choice). Make sure to get these vehicles third-party verified.
How about Swift Zxi?
I prefer 4-cylinder cars over 3. My I20 (3 cylinder) is fun to drive, but it took me some time to get used to the not-so-smooth driving experience. I would suggest test-driving the I20 and Swift and deciding which one offers a better driving experience for you, But 3 c are better for fuel efficiency
also, go for plus AMT in my opinion
Buy a used Ignis. โ๏ธ Compact โ๏ธ Mileage โ๏ธ Smooth Engine โ๏ธ Resale Value โ๏ธ Serviceability
For first time users best to buy a maruti or a honda.
Reason being, pick any car of these brands and you will get reliability. This is the most important aspect of ownership since you are aย novice and all you want is a simple car that starts when you want and just goes.
You will learn about other aspects of cars once you have an ownership experience but Japanese cars are best for begineers.ย
Cherry on cake would be mileage which goes very well along with good after sales and worry free ownership.ย
speaking of reliability, almost all cars are good to go the first few years especially till the warranty expires. OP is planning on upgrading after 4-5 years so it shouldnโt really matter right?
Not really Indian brands like Tata and Mahindra and generally worse cars for first time buyers since it can ruin their experience. These cars need proper PDI and checking before buying, also owners should know how their car works(both mechanical and electrical aspects) and learn to understand issues by just the sound, vibration, jerkiness etc.ย
ย Brands like German need proper maintainnce and car. You handle it wrong and get ready to pay for it with a few lakhs. Korean brands are a middle ground between a Japanese and German.ย ย
Best bet is always Japanese brands where hardly anyone faces issues even if they even don't do a proper PDI(dont recommend). It's a stress free experience, which is mostly what any first time buyer looks for.ย
Indian Brands are the last thing to buy for any first time buyers.
How about Swift Zxi?
Good reliable car.
Good mileage and reliability. You can definitely consider it.
It was recently facelifted and the new engine is even more fuel efficient than the previous generation. Though ofcourse the new engine is 3 cylinder but since it's your first car, you won't miss anything.ย
Also, the new model has 6 airbags, so there's that too.
Baleno if safety ain't your concern.
Amaze if safety is your concern.
Brezza base model if you don't care about tech in your car.
Can also take a look at Kiger/Magnite.
How about Swift Zxi?
Honestly, Baleno makes more sense over the new Swift at the moment.
But if you like Swift better then it's a no nonsense car as well.
Am a first timer. Punch served me well. Take a test of that as well.
First time owners should stay away from TATA
Fronx Delta+. Will retain good resale value too and will be fuel efficient (as per your requirements).
Resale value is something I couldn't comment on. Imo, maruti celerio is best in mileage and sufficient-"iss" boot space. If you want easy learning curve, buy automatic!
I didn't want to change my car for next 15 year so i went with Baleno AMT.
Heard it has safety issues. What are these issues exactly? Did they not bother you?
Today was my largest drive of 60km + 60km with 1 hour rest in between. I didn't notice any issue. Though I won't be the right person to comment on it because i have 0 car driving experience.
i10 or i20 hands down.
Visibility is great, the steering wheel has both tilt and telescopic function and is very light, fuel efficiency is decent, resale value is good, 6 airbags are standard, NVH is excellent for its price, tech on the top models is excellent and the clutch pedal on the MT models has one of the easiest bite points.
Having owned a bunch of different cars abroad and in India, I can definitely notice the effort Hyundaiโs put into their K1 and K2 platform models.
Do not get a second hand car. Second hand cars might have some problem , being a first time buyer this can be very frustrating. There are many good first hand choices like beleno , Nexon, Xuv3OO . Buy a first hand car with a 4 years extended warranty for mental peace .
Get a used/new Suzuki Ignis/Swift if it's mainly going to be used in the city. Easy to drive, no fuss kind of cars. Also could have a look at Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.
People are going to suggest various cars as per their experience and I probably can too. However I see that you seem to be eyeing Swift ZXI. If that's what your heart wants then you should go for it. Just read up on the features and the pros and cons between the various options shortlisted - you have probably done that already. New or old it's totally up to you. Again both have their pros and cons.
If your daily commute is 70 km then I'd suggest something that is more fuel efficient. If your budget allows then you can go for EV which has least running cost per km. You'd have to consider home charging and public charging infrastructure. CNG seems like a middle ground between current (petrol) and target (EV) states and you have to check CNG availability in your city.
I can tell you my experience with my car. I too have the same situation as yours, beginner, family of 3, fuel efficiency as my priority, plenty of outstation travelling, although I don't drive daily (bike is good enough for daily commute). Hence I got a WagonR CNG variant, costing me some 8 lac including extra accessories. My city mileage is about 20-21 and highways about 33-35 on CNG, all with AC switched on and going 80-90 speed. I hardly run it on petrol. The car starts on petrol and automatically switches to CNG in under a minute so petrol consumption is hardly worth mentioning. One thing to consider about CNG cars is the loss of some boot space. My reason for picking WagonR is that this one has the highest amount of available boot space despite having the CNG tank. We adapted to it by switching from two large suitcases to three medium duffle bags which can be fit comfortably. Any additional luggage, which is rare, can be placed in the rear seat as it's only 3 people sitting.
Hope this helps.
Yep, definitely helped. Well written too. Thanks.
You should get CNG car. Baleno Fronx Exter Punch
How about Swift Zxi?
Nissan Magnite

I10 cng ftw
I would say go for a used ecosport
Buy the new Swift
Why buy the new swift which has a 3 cylinder engine when you can buy a Baleno for almost the same price .
Beginner, intends to sell it in some years
Yeah but imo that doesnโt make much difference. Swift is easier to sell but baleno is gonna go for a better price.
What is this safety issue that people usually mention about Baleno?
Donโt expect much safety from majority of Maruti cars ; For safety reasons Tata is the way to go
Baleno
I heard Baleno had safety issues. I don't understand what it exactly is but that makes reluctant for sure.
Ignis: compact, peppy, extremely easy to drive, fuel efficienct, good discounts.
Buy a Suzuki with inbuilt CNG
EV not an option?
Tata punch, Baleno, hyundai Exter, grand i10 nios they all are best value car
Tiago EV
Get something like a VW Polo from used car market. - fun to drive & won't pain much even if you trash it. - 15 smthg mileage. - built like a damn tank. - mostly available for around 7 lacs with a few thousand kms on odo and 4-5 years left to run. - If you buy from someone like Spinny - they give 6-12 months of full/ service warranty - For maintenance or servicing - you can see if you have a VW service center or a local market for car parts nearby (I live in Delhi so have both).
With due respect, I do not agree. Buying a German car with that budget is an invitation for those companies to take every penny out of your savings. Imagine spending 30k every year for routine maintenance and that too, on a used car. No disrespect to German car owners and fans, those cars require proper maintenance and a lot of upkeep. I would definitely not recommend buying a used German car with that budget. I know this first hand because one of my neighbors bought a used Polo and he tells he's extremely unhappy. The car doesn't even give mileage of 10kmpl with AC in Hyderabad and everytime it enters the service bay, it leaves with a slap of 25-30k. It's not worth the hassle. Better buy a new German car and increase your budget and maintenance provision.
Oh no, please disagree - I love to hear different opinions bro. Honestly I feel bad for your neighbor - I really think he got the shorter end of the stick :(
We have been driving my friend's polo for almost 1.5 yrs now - clocked 30k on that bad guy with our trips to distant places. And it's still going strong.
The maintenance cost too comes around 7-8k roughly.
Recently one of my flatmates paid upwards of 12k for his Baleno servicing under the "premium" Nexa services. Thus I thought owning a VW is better paying that kinda amount for a damn Maruti ๐
amaze is calling you
I believe Punch or Amaze should be good.
Citroen C3 aircross
MG Astor
MS Ciaz
Mahindra XUV300/3X0
Get a second hand brezza
May be get an amaze
2nd hand swift Ritz Lelo diesel mai best.
go for a pre owned i10 Nios. Decently feature loaded and easy to drive
Altroz or i20 is the only option.
Altroz diesel, Tiago, Amaze, i10, Brezza (pre-owned), i20 (pre-owned)
All these cars have quite a decent safety. My top recommendation is Altroz diesel because that's the peppiest of the lot but that might need a little bit of budget stretch. If you can find a pre-owned, it will be nice. A no headache option would be Amaze but it is not that powerful and the supension is a bit softer, which is pretty good for cities but highways, not a big fan. Same applies for all Maruti cars - they all have a very soft setup. So, it boils down to personal preference.
In the same boat as you except pt 3. Booked amaze top end yesterday
Being a car owner myself for the last 10+ years, here are my 2 cents - go for Hyundai i20/Venue - go for diesel variant, not petrol (since you'll be driving > 12k km/year). It'll be cost efficient. Extra cost upfront will be compensated in no time. - once you get the car, you'll learn driving the car in no less than 2 weeks. It's all about practice. You'll have the confidence after driving first 250km. - get the base+2/3 version. You don't need the top variant.
Op you seem to have a tilt towards swift zxi, I'have no knowledge about cars but my friends do. Reply here, I'll post a detailed analysis asap.
Baleno, undoubtedly!
Get the Ignis
Lord alto ( 1 st gen ) cheap and affordable comes under 3 lakh in used market if possible buy one with black plastic bumper easy to swap out :)
3x0 lower variants mx ones
India is not for beginners /s
Jokes apart.
Tata Altroz is a great choice for the city.
If you want a crossover SUV body, then some good choices are Exter and Punch
I'd recommend going with sonet, i10/i20 (whatever fits your budget) or 3xo if you are ok with the base variant.
I recently went to an exchange and bought a car off of them (without exchanging) and it was a good experience. I went to a tata and ended up finding a tata that I was happy with.
Get a second hand car. Use it often. When you're ready for a new car you will know.ย
PS: there is a risk that you will love your used car so much you won't want to part with it. There is also the usual risks associated with the used car market.
Just buy a new tata tiago.
Manual or Automatic ?
Ignis
Amaze
Do check out sonet htk plus or optional can get it under 10Lakhs possibly
Punch , i10 Nios , will get them below 8too. Can check our venue or sonet too. The new Mahindra 3X0 is very good . Nexon too is a good option if safety is a big concern . Mileage being a concern - fronx is good . Good fit and finish , go for hyundai or Kia . avoid renault and nissan
Resale value is something I couldn't comment on. Imo, maruti celerio is best in mileage and sufficient-"iss" boot space. If you want easy learning curve, buy automatic!
I didn't want to change my car for next 15 year so i went with Baleno AMT.

Ciaz is a great car comfortable and easy to use. Ground clearance is good enough
Get a swift/baleno from a used car market. Use it for 3 years max and sell it and upgrade.
